Marstons Reviews

Marstons Oyster Stout (Bottle/Keg) 3.2
Can from Fakta, Copenhagen - black pour with tan head. Sweet and light roasted malty aroma and taste with prominent coffee, chocolate, caramel, some light burnt malty notes, roasted finish.

Marstons Old Empire (Bottle) 2.7
Bottle from Tesco, Brighouse. Golden with a thinnish head. Lightly hopped but never too flavoursome, nor does its strength impact too much. Has a dryish texture, some bitterness with its pale ale character most evident in its aftertaste.

Marstons Owd Rodger 2.2
Second bottle purchased and another with an ill-fitting cap on the bottle. Poured flat with minimal head and the barest carbonation. Taste was strong-sweet, slightly sickly, typical strong ale, almost a barley wine but not as heady. Marston’s need to check their bottling process - I can’t be the only person who has experienced two flat bottles in as many weeks. Disappointing.

Marstons Old Empire (Bottle) 2.8
Beer with not strong malty aroma, hops aren’t there. Dry in taste with nice bitterness in palate. Clear Amber colour body with weak white foamy. Overall nothing special :/

Marstons Pedigree (Matured in Oak Barrels) 2.9
Solid pale ale that is more malt driven than hop driven which is probably why it is not rating higher.

Marstons Owd Rodger 3.4
From bottle pours very dark, almost like a porter and thing beige head. Aroma is strong sticky brown sugar, stewed fruits like plumb, dates and a tough of fig, with roasted nuts. Taste is strong sweet but nicely balanced by roasted malt and hoppy bitterness. A little watery yet sticky as far as texture goes. Overall pretty damn nice!

Marstons Old Empire (Bottle) 3
Pours gold from bottle with white foamy head. Aroma is caramel malt, hay, grassy, floral and slight citrus. Flavour is sweet and nicely balanced savoury bitter. Decent bottled beer!

Marstons Old Empire (Cask) 3
Cask at The Water House (JDW), Durham, £2.09/pint. Clear copper beer with a thin, off-white head. The nose is really quite muted but does hint at sweetish tropical fruit amidst sulphurous character. Indeed sweet tropical fruit flavours can be found in the taste, alongside skunky, earthy notes. The flavours are a little crude and heavy but the fruitiness is pleasant and I enjoyed it more than from a bottle.

Marstons Oyster Stout (Bottle/Keg) 1.8
Optisch prima, brauner Schokoschaum, sehr dicht, bräunlich. In der Nase irgendwie staubig, Wein (?). Um Trunk sehr leicht, fast schon wässrig. Erst im Abgang ein Hauch Röstmalz. Zu wenig Charakter, sorry.

Marstons Old Empire (Bottle) 2.8
500ml bottle. Clear golden colour with a small frothy white head. Aroma is lightly sweet, malts and some hops. Taste is hoppy, lightly bitter citric grapefruit finish, light malty flavours. Nothing stands out with this one.

Marstons Owd Rodger 3.4
Bottle fom B&M Bargains. Pours deep chestnut with a thin cream head. Toasty malt aroma. The taste has light spice with a liquorice and aniseed giving it a bit of a cough syrup taste. Quite decent.

Marstons Pedigree (Cask) 2.5
Cask. Pours darkish amber. Not loads of aroma, just a bit of malt. Fairly bland taste. Perhaps it was better in days gone by or perhaps there’s just better options nowadays.

Marstons Owd Rodger 3.3
Pours opaque chestnut with a fair buff head. Malty and fruity aroma invites a taste. Fruity, malty, caramel flavor is quite pleasing. Mouthfeel presents firm body and good fizz. Rodger dodger, a good one.

Marstons Oyster Stout (Bottle/Keg) 2.9
500ml bb06/2016, Maruhn. An oyster stout with no indicated use of oysters (nor their shells for filtering), pasteurised to accompany rather than contain seafood. Overall watery, sessionable and probably quite historical approximation of the style, offering some toffee (thin, sulphurs), coffee roast and gentle ("Burton"ised?) mineral brine for a dry, "smooth, easy" if somewhat spineless tipple.

Marstons Old Empire (Bottle) 3.7
500ml bottle from alko. Slightly hazy orage, lots of thick white head. Aroma has caramel and hops. Light sweetness, medium bitterness. Pretty simple beer, but one that can be savoured and really good for what it is.

First ever rating and what a beer to start with.... Appearance is none existing as well as the aroma it is just not surprising or challenging in any way. Not a beer I would recommend, but happy to be here on Ratebeer!

Marstons Resolution / Low C 1.6
Bottle. Pale colour. No head retention. Just smells like a normal lager. Just a normal lager in taste as well, not much going on. Drinkable but not great. For people that dont like ales etc and just want to drink a normal beer.

Marstons EPA (Bottle) 2.7
Bottled, 500ml from a local Co-Op Store. Pale gold with short lived head. This proved to be a thin, grainy, stewed malty beer. There is a slight lemon note, quite lager like in character. Not brilliant.

Cask pint in my local Wetherspoons on 8th Jan 2016. Clear mahogany body with a creamy head in colour and texture. Malty molasses rule this Winter brew, semi-sweet with a mild fruity flavour mid-sip. One of the better UK Christmas beers I have had this winter.

Marstons Oyster Stout (Bottle/Keg) 4
Excellent light yet complex stout. I don’t normally go for stout on the case on its richness and decadence which is only suitable on certain occasions (I’d rather a good Landbier on a Friday night!). However this was purchased for me from Nose is of coffee mixed with just over toasted bread. The pour isn’t as exciting as a nitrogen infused can, and settles with a small off white head but with good lacing. Taste is rich, pleasing coffee and toffee...not too bitter not too sweet. Also a nice pleasant liquorice sourness which I enjoy to counteract the maltiness without reverting to hops. This all leaves a satisfying, warm rich dark taste in the mouth which is excellently balanced. All tastebuds are tingling in equal measure. As the bottle states: this is smooth, easy drinking. But also incredibly satisfying. Would love to try it draft!

On keg at the New Crown in Bridlington. Appearance - dark brown with amber and plum shades and a nice head. Nose - light nut red fruits but predominantly toffee. Taste - more of the same. A touch of marzipan at a stretch. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - a decent mild.

Marstons Pedigree (Matured in Oak Barrels) 2.6
Bottle. Pours a clear pale amber colour with a fizzy white head. Aroma of grain, caramel, some biscuit, slight red berries and earthy hops. Taste of caramel, some biscuit, slight berries, subtle mineral and spicy, earthy hops. Light bodied and moderate carbonation. A dry, musky, earthy hop bitterness in the finish. Not a lot of difference between this and the ordinary bottled version, only that it’s slightly smoother.

Marstons Christmas Pudding 2.9
Cask at the Turk’s Head, St Helens. Sweet toffee aroma. Was expecting a veritable bouquet of fruit and spices on first sip but didn’t get much more than the aroma offered. Bit of a let down really. A nice pint, but not befitting of the name

Flasche:Deep golden, a bit unclear; small but lacy white foamy layer; more exotic-fruity than piney traces in the dryish bitter nose; moderate dry bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied; slightly lingering and drier fruity-hoppy finish, balancing pale malt well detectable. Really good…
