Marstons Old Empire (Bottle)
Doesn’t really taste like an IPA, although on the new bottles those letters are printed all over the label. Maybe I’ve never tried an IPA with english hops before... The citrus notes are totally missing and it tastes very malty and sweet like bread and caramel.

Bottle from Morrisons, Todmorden, as Marston’s Golden Ginger Beer. Golden with no head. The ginger is extremely strong in the ale, providing a spicy fire in the palate that lingers long.

Manns Brown Ale
Very dark brown color almost black, with creamy coffee foam. Aromas on the weaker side of caramel, toasted malts and toffee with that stronger aged touch. Palate, light body with thin slightly mouth coating texture leaving very sweet caramel finish. Taste is definatly sweet with hints of toffee and caramel, but not intense, quite watery. Overall, interesting, it is only 2.8% and in a way like very water and weak dark beer, and quite simple. Interesting.

Cask at the Crown Rivers, JDW - Heathrow. Pours clear gold with a frothy, pure white head. Pale grains in the nose, some damp hay, old lemon peel. Light sweet flavour with notes of damp carpet, more gains, musty hay, lemon peel. Light bodied with average carbonation. Not too pleasant to finish, with more of the same. Pretty mediocre.

Served in a snifter from a 500ml bottle. Pours a clear copper amber with an off-white diminishing head. Aroma is malt, notes of caramel and earth. Taste is very balanced with malty and caramel notes. Light body with soft carbonation and clean finish. Very smooth and easy to drink. Excellent and enjoyable ale. More of a session ale than bitter though but is worth getting more!

Marstons Help for Heroes
Cask at The John Duck, Durham, £2.75/pint. Coppery amber with a smooth, white head that laces well. The aroma is quite bitter, grainy and markedly sulphurous (obviously Marstons) with some biscuit notes. The taste is full of pretty unpleasant flavours of damp cardboard and sulphur with some more biscuit malts that fall short of making it palatable, likewise a touch of dryness to the finish. Poor.

Appearance: clear pale to medium amber with one finger of loose ivory head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, no lacing. (2/5) Aroma: biscuity caramel and toffee, fruity esters, grassy and earthy. (5/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (5/10) Palate: medium body tending to watery, moderate to low carbonation, off-dry mildly bitter finish. (3/5) Not much to say about this: biscuity malt leads the way, finishing with a mild earthy bitter. A very typical pub pint. (10/20)

50 cl bottle, served in large snifter. Pours clear dark copper with some off-white head. Very interesting mild aromas: toffee, cookies, caramel, some herbs. Taste starts sweetish, then develops a round mouthfeel, to end with no bitterness and hints of cherries. Nicer than the overall score might indicate.

Marstons Revisionist Irish Peated Ale
Tasted this in the Salt Cot, Saltcoats (JDW) on the 12th March 2016. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear dark russet in colour with a thin white head which fades far too fast. Malty aroma with hints of soft toffee. Thin watery mouthfeel and poor lacing. Mixed malts give a maltloaf base with sweet highland toffee and a slight burr of phenol evident. Light hoppy presence which gives a short bitter aftertaste that fades quickly. Finish is malty with dry vinous flavours of oak cask, roast grain, walnut oil and old leather. A decent session Irish Ale.

I’m joking …
