Indi Pale Ale
Pint on tap at The Garden, Leederville. Golden orange beer, creamy white head. Many tiny bubbles. Nose is citric and a bit grassy. Crisp, clean, bit of bite. Finishes with a herbal dryness and a late dash of bitter lemon. Looks great, smells great, tastes great. What's not to like?

Indi Brett Not Brett
200517. Taster at GABS in Melbourne. This beer is way too easy to drink – lucky it is only 4.5% ABV. Tart, funky and fresh this beer fills the mouth with all the flavours of a tropical fruit cocktail with the added goodness of strong sour finish. Light amber in colour with a thin wispy white head of foam. Smells like a fruit salad but tastes much better.

Indi The P.O.M.
On draught @ Indi Brew Haus, Mindarie.
Looks good; a solid, lasting dollop of mocha cream atop a deep chestnut body, bright as bright. Rusty, roasted and dusty malts on the nose with a little cola, caramel, almond and damp timber. Inside a toffee and burnt sugar front follows on to a bitter, woody and nutty malt and earthy hop back end. Lasting, raspy, herbal and earthy hop finish, initially very dry. As it warms the malt sweetness builds, biscuity and grainy to balance the English hops. Full bodied, mouthfilling and fuelled by moderate effervescence. Salty, mineral-like Burton snatch is well evident. Overall it is a grand ale. Hefty but easily quaffed. I like it!!

Indi Britannia Best Bitter
On draught @ Indian Ocean Brewing Company, Mindarie Keys.
An easy drinking quaffer that had more of the hallmarks of an 80’s Aussie bitter than that of the English kind. It produces up a very attractive indeed, sparkling orange amber with a steady, whipped up mousse of white atop that frosts over the glass. Nose is subtle but does offer up some grainy, wholemeal and earthy floral hops. On the palate it is light with medium carbonation giving it the overall mouthfeel of a pale lager. Good bitter edge though it soon becomes a little metallic in taste. Malt is dusty but reserved. There is a subtle sweetness outlined by orange citrus and delicate floral notes. Ends grassy and floral but is crisp and fades off quickly. Would love to see this one the beer engine as I think they’re on to a winner in the upcoming Summer quaffer dept. Not bad!

Indi Big Red
On draught @ Indi Brew Haus 24/03/13.
After slugging back far too many Malbec’s and Cab Sauv’s at this year’s Toast to the Coast it was time to relax at Indi - and time to give this one another belt! It produced up a russet chestnut with a dense, compact white head that holds on and laces well. Sweet toffee and biscuity malts peak out from under layers of fresh hops showcasing damp herbs, bitter grapefruit, tangerine and pine needles. Good body, firm and rounded with moderate to light carbonation. Biscuity, nutty malt fills it out and gives it a controlled sweetness up front. All hops passed the mid-palate; piney and peakingly bitter with a herbal, grassy, grapefruit and wine-like fruity finish. Quite dry in the swallow but there is definitely enough fruit to quench the palate. This has come a long way from last I tried it. Very easy to drink, and wonderfully showcasing of those hops. Good stuff!!!
On draught @ Indi Brew Haus, Mindarie Keys 22/08/12.
Produced up a bright, ruddy copper and donned by a lasting, creamy, off-white head. Sweet aroma of fresh baked Anzac biscuits, sticky marmalade and pine resin. Super sweet, tangy and sugary on the palate, and residually so too. Served up extra chilled I can’t imagine this getting better as it warms. Taste of Golden syrup and caramelised orange dominates with a praline, nutty edge that leaches the desperate hops in back. Fuzzy and rough, herbal and floral tail with a moderate bitter edge and husky, repeating phenols showing. Long sweet malt finish again takes over from the hops. Too off-balance to be enjoyed anything but chilled. I am a sucker so another taster will come; hopefully of a second batch come summer! 6-3-5-3-10

Indi Lager
Draught @ Indi Brew Haus, Mindarie Keys.
Part of a new line-up.
Deep amber and sparsely effervescent with a drabby, lax white cap that manages little lace. Nose is subdued by temperature. Brought out well once its warmed. Spicy and herbal noble hops and rich toasted malt shows, flowing onto the palate. Good body, firm and rounded with plenty of bounce. Lots of malt sweetness; toasted and rich with a gritty edge. Melds with the all hop backend before fading off. Peppery, spicy, herbal and earthy in the tail with a lasting bitterness. Well balanced and crowd pleasing. A very quaffable lager!

On draught @ Indi Brewhaus, Mindarie Keys.
Pale straw, translucent with soda-pop effervescence. Sweet and sour berries and peardrops dominate some softer tart apple notes in the aroma, quite clean and subtle. Has a zingy, sherbet-like taste; Fizz-whizz candy comes to mind, sweet and tart. Apple fruit plays throughout but is on the lean side. Drops off very shy and crisp in the finish, not much to linger aside a burst of CO2 and a little fruit sugar. Crowd pleasing stuff, the missus liked it so they got something right!

Indi Hop Joy Wet Hop Ale
On draught @ Indi Brew haus, Mindarie Keys.
Sunny, orange gold with good clarity. head is a mostly lasting mess of white that leaves good legs. Very subtle nose tinged by the house liquor. Grassy, spicy and herbal with very subdued pine and sour citrus. Quite piney, sharp and slightly metallic as a good flavour combo. Again, way too chilled on draught, the beer needs a good hour near a firplace to thaw out. Buttery, grain base, husky but slick with a buttery length. Not much hop definition though they are definitely there, floating bitterness and grassy edge adding top it. Little in the way of fruit esters. Don’t know the hop used but might be a PofR clone. Very light bodied. A little gassy too but that can be changed. Would like to see this on the handpumps to compare - get rid of the gas and the chill. Easy to drink but a bit of a let down!

Indi East Kent Ale
A favourite tipple of mine back in September 2011.
Handpump @ Indian Ocean Brewing Company, Mindarie Quays.
Bright and radiant, fiery copper through the lights. Lasting, tight and creamy off white leaves rings of foam down the glass. Hints of tea, rose petals, pine wood and burnt bread atop a lot of buttery toffee and caramel is the aroma. In the mouth it starts sweet; lots of crystal comes through, hints of toffee praline and rich toasted grain leading to a dry, woody and earthy, floral backend. Firm body, a little residual carbonation upfront otherwise it is lifeless. Finish is oily, good mix of Goldings hops and biscuity malt, tapers off well. Pleasantly bitter. Recommend it be served a little warmer to bring out the flavour, otherwise this is a solid, sessionable Bitter. Nice!

Indi Sundae
Draught @ Indi brewhaus, Mindarie Quays, late 2011.
Too chilled when served so it needed some time to warm up. Produced up a cloudy straw yellow with a snow-white, creamy cappuccino foam that was well retained and left a fine lace. Sour, lemon citrus, mild clove and vanilla, wheat and light tart green banana is the aroma. Good spicy presence on the palate; clean, peppery, clove-like in the back with a base of sourish malts, vanilla icecream and banana. Very light bodied to fill out a little at the point it was truly warmed. Sprightly, generous carbonation detracted a little from the flavour. Sour, drawing citrus in the swallow dries the palate out somewhat and grips the saliva glands. Overall a decent effort at the style, I suppose. Makes for good session material though.

Indi Best Bitter
Cask, handpump at the brewhaus. Produces a orange copper in body and just off bright. A few residual bubbles rise sluggishly up to a lax, thin white pad that is resilient to fade and leaves a little legs. Slightly tinny, metallic hop nose, mildly earthy and floral to save it with a good level of crystal and woody malts coming through. Quite sweet, sugar syrup and Anzac biscuits, a lot of tangy marmalade conserve. Peppery and floral hops add a little balance but the bitterness on and in the swallow is too subdued. Husky, sweet and woody malt finish and linger. Firm body, a lot of residual sugar, they could have fermented this up a few notches me thinks. Very light tickle of carbonation otherwise its flat across the palate. Served cool and not chilled this was way too sweet for me, had to revert back to their Mild after one. Indi 6 Grains
Draught at the brewery.
A deep tawny orange and hazy in body with plenty of minute carbonation. Good sized off-white pad forms to hold for the length and leave some fine lacing. Roast malt, wood and salted peanut nose. Sweet biscuit and vanilla start it off, some flowery, weedy hops play in with undertones of toast, roasted nuts and a little bitter, burnt sugar. Swallow is just a continuation of the palate. Has a residual raw sugar sweetness to it, as well as just a hint of brine. Quite a creamy full mouthfeel, but easily brain-off sessionable. Bitterness starts off soft but grows as it warms, a savoury hint of pale fruit-cake comes in also. Not too bad a beer, much better as it warms as I’ve found with most of the ales served here nearly frozen (maybe to please the slightly lah-de-dah residents of Mindarie!)

Indi English Summer Ale
Draught at the brewery.
Initial thoughts is it looks like a pint glass filled with sand. I’m just glad a messy, foamy white pad was set atop but that just gave me the impression of residual froth after the waves had crashed upon a beach, hmmm! Produced up a muddy, murky and dull yellow gold with a fine bead. Initial burst of wet cardboard and sweaty socks wanes a little to reveal some barnyard grit and hay, warm toasted bread and lemon zest. Oddly tastes more of wheat than barley. Quite lot of fizz to delve through and watery when chilled I had to let this sit for a moment, read a book to pass the time. Sweet front with a rough piney, woodiness, sour, lemony edge and a big wad of herbal, grassy hops that give a mildly sharp edge and a nice heavy bitterness to it. Esters of mango and passionfruit late into drinking linger in the mouth, some phenolics too of cloves (have I the right beer? English Summer Ale?). Body ends as medium-light, definitely not to be served chilled as it’s nothing but fizzy sour water cold. Second pint was much better than the first as the palate had adjusted well by then. Summery, just a little lost as to what style of beer it is!?

Indi Vanilla Milk Stout
Typically dense, nitrogenated tannish head that has a high sheen, holds and leaves congealed rings of foam behind as it wanes. Body is black as black. Rusty car body nose off-set by some burnt wood and Bovril. Initial taste of rust and grapeskins gleefully subsides to reveal milky chocolate, mocha, weak espresso and vanilla icecream notes. A little soft fudge in the aftertaste resides shortly. Medium-full body, but sadly overly filling in the depths meaning one was enough. Too short of being a stout for my liking. The alcohol well masked but it doesn’t rightly fit the bill in many aspects. And I think nitrogen fed beers should be outlawed, but that is just me!!! (Draught at the brewery, Mindarie)

A pint straight up as it is getting hot outside.
Medium gold, translucent and shimmers when held up to the light. Soppy white head forms and holds, shows good legs, the carbonation intermittent. Dusty malt and hop nose, good grainy notes, husky, a little peppery spice and some lemony acidity. Good balance of peppery, spicy hops, mildly bitter, and dusty malt in the mouth. Sweet and sour citrus plays on the side of the tongue, the finish crisp, impressively clean and very short. Very light in body and adequately carbonated to give it a racy mouthfeel. Enough here to interest me, and being a low-carb lager it is one of the best I’ve found. Good Summer spritzer, perfect for Sunday sessions at Indi Brauhaus! (On draught at the brewery, Mindarie)

From notes alone. Tried this at the brewery, on draught, October this year.
’Palest gold, not much action carb-wise; head a thin, flaccid layer of last suds that do show good legs. Subtle nose - cured meats, ash and fish fryer oil (well-used)?. Very spicy is the palate, flavour is subdued, some smoked pork-belly and pan-fried chorizo with a hint of clean of peppery hops in late. The smoked, meat flavour lingers in loosely for just a second. The palate very clean, very light with a crisp speedy finish. A little simmered herbs reach into the olfactories as it warms. Though subtle it hits the spot. No nastiness here. Decent and reserved easy-drinker.’

Ahhh, it is but that sweet time of year again where big glass tankards come out and the beer takes a little longer to pour, but goes down in double-time - yes, Oktoberfest!!!. Lunch here at the Brewhaus, a Bavarian dish and this beside all glistening in the midday sun. It shimmers the clearest yellow-gold, nice even and fine streams of bubbles making their way up to burst to life in the form of a condensed pad of snow that laces intricately. It’s aroma a heady mix of gritty, haystack and dusty malts, floral hops and just a touch fresh baked, warm white bread; sultry!!! Big, yet small, rampaging, yet softer than a brush with a feather is the palate. Very clean, broad toasted malts and gritty pale grains dance with tangy, slightly sour malt and hops in back with a good infusion of peppery spices and fresh herbs throughout. The swallow so neat and tight, remains crisp, clean, floral with just a touch of late pilsner malt as it sinks down into darkness. Its front has a subtle sweetness, the very rear a moderate bitterness that flows with the flavour, a lovely linger of palest Summer grains and floral, zesty hops are left well melded to the tongue. Near a litre gone and it holds so well, keeping as if fresh poured with each sip. This is just one fantastic, true to style pilsner, the best I have had since returning from Deutschland and one worthy of more than just a Silver at the Beer awards. Definitely one I’d go out of my way to savour, a truly lovely drop!!! (90cL tankard, from draught)

Sadly the second and last beer I got to try for the day. New found anticipation and support for the micro’s in Perth, against the big two, has seen this brewhouse sell out of the other two beers, so another visit on my part is needed. After a Pale ale that was every inch a pale ale I desired I moved onto the Witbier. Crowd pleasing at its best I have never understood the desire for breweries to pump these ’Witbiers’ out other than the high turnover of kegs$$$. This wasn’t that bad a drop though. In a tall flute, it was a cloudy, pastel yellow in body with a creamy, white, ¼" pad that retained well and left good legs. Zesty, fresh squeezed lemon aroma with a decent backing of clove-like phenols. Fresh, lively lemons in the mouth too with a blend of lemon and orange peel, a touch of mango juice and some whole cloves. Body is extremely light and well charged making it bounce across the palate at lightning speed. Sour wheat malt in the finish, tangy, zesty and very fresh. It was simple and pleasing. Held about as much ground as judging a macro-lager, but atleast this tasted of effort. Refreshing, clean and perfect for Summer Sundays.

Draught @ the lovely, absolutely huge, no expense spared brewhouse, Mindarie Keys Marina, Mindarie.
Honestly need to sit back and change my opinion of micro’s in Oz. We brew up some pleasant quaffer’s here and there, but the general Aussie beer drinker doesn’t want lactic sourness, yeasty extremities or high alpha acid ales, he/she just wants something that tastes like beer!?!?. Subconsciously, and hell even on the surface, I didn’t expect much of this ale. ’IPA’ as a term has been used and abused, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. And I think it lies in this gem. Tasted in it’s own standard pint glass, very British. Presented well; tight, though flaccid head of cream that lasted and legged it well down the glass. Body was a bright, sparkling orangey copper that held very fine intermittent streams of carbonation that were sluggish to erupt. The aroma is subdued; fresh, clean malts, orange marmalade, light breadyness and some yeast. Quite Summery and pleasing enough, but it does come alive in the mouth. Zingy, well rounded presence on the palate. Nice blend of juicy ripe oranges, toasted and crystallised malts, biting, spicy and bitter, grassy hops in back and a fresh as fresh, quenching swallow that holds well in the mouth. Body is medium, very firm and solid in feel and lightly prickly in carbonation. You could say this was served perfectly. Aftertaste shows some nutty, toasted malts and spicy, bitter oranges with just and edge of vanilla that my wife picked up on her first mouthful. The fact she found it refreshing was enough to say this was a damn fine Pale ale. This coming Summers perfect session ale. Balanced to perfection, well defined and has it all working in its own favour. Very Nice.
