Wing Yip

Essentially a supermarket full of Chinese food without any emphasis on beers although there’s some sake. It does have a small range of rice based lagers from East Asia in bottles, not just Chinese brands. Not really worth a side trip for though.

The place for everything Chinese! Wing Yip is a huge Chinese supermarket just off Oldham Road. We visited on a Sunday morning around the time of Chinese new year and it was doing a roaring trade. It’s primarily a food supermarket but also sells kitchen equipment, hardware and homewares as well as oriental beer and saki. It’s not easy to know exactly what’s what and I got the impression that the English labels were less descriptive than the ones in Chinese lettering but it’s certainly a interesting place to visit. Once I’d dragged myself away from the fascinating live fish counter I located the beer and saki scattered on a number of different shelves and over some of the freezer compartments.
