70 I had a good feeling about this place the minute I found out its proprietor is Fat Mike (of NOFX fame). It’s an average sized corner pub so arrive early if you have a party of 4-6 because it can fill up fast. The decor is simple and cozy, with a small bar at the far end and a few tables taking up the remaining space.
There’s a small selection of commercial and craft brews, including local selections from Brooklyn and Sixpoint breweries. I came here shortly after the xmas holidays so Brooklyn Winter Ale was available on tap. The Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA is pretty good, though not as hoppy and bitter as I had hoped. Their bottled beer selection is fairly diverse and includes craft lagers and ales, as well as imports such as Lindemans Framboise Lambic and Duvel. I haven’t tried any of the house cocktails, but the mixologist/bar manager is apparently excellent and, judging by the menu, quite inventive. I’d certainly like to try one of his concoctions next time.
The main reason I came to Thistle Hill, was the food. I’d heard good things about both the infamous Fat Mike Burger (a.k.a. the Burger) and the vegan burger. After sampling both, I can definitely recommend them. |
