78 /100 Trader Joe’s - Alexandria (Grocery Store) 612 N SAINT ASAPH ST Visited here on a Friday afternoon in late May '23 to pick up some beers for the weekend. Excellent suggestion for a Trader Joe's - a lot more than their store label beers and a few locals. Plenty of singles to choose from, lots of tall boys from around Virginia and a great find was a Maine lunch IPA. Like most TJ's - great prices. A bit larger than other Trader Joes', lot more selections of food items. Very friendly service. |
74 /100 Chadwicks Old Town (Restaurant) 203 THE STRAND Visited here on a Friday for lunch in late May '23. Old time English pub kind of look and feel to the place. Lots of wood and brick. Plenty of booths, a bar and a small patio outside. Soups, sandwiches, salads and such, had a crab cake sandwich and it was delicious. Plenty of Virginia breweries on tap. |
80 /100 Rustico Restaurant - Alexandria (Restaurant) 827 SLATERS LN Free parking lot out back. Big bottle selection of aged stuff (reserve). Decent draft list. Only had time for one drink. Food was good but selection was limited. Has a kids menu. No idea about WiFi. If I lived here I could see myself coming here for dinner to have one of those rare beers. |
70 /100 3950 WHEELER AVE Large space with a bar room and also lots of extra seating in the brewery. A unique flight concept, where they give you tickets and you can get the beers at your own place. A big variety of styles. Beer quality was mostly fine, not super exciting. |
74 /100 847 S PICKETT ST. Large industrial taproom in an industrial area. Lots of arcade games and things to keep everyone entertained. Beer selection is as varied as you expect from Aslin, although there was only one barrel aged stout on draft and zero bottles to go on my visit. Not easy to get to without your own car, but a fun place to visit. |
66 /100 Virtue Feed & Grain (Restaurant) 106 S UNION ST Bar / restaurant close to the river. Beer selection is reasonably large if not hugely exciting. Pre-set flight available. Food was fine. |
76 /100 847 S PICKETT ST. Solid place! Outdoor and indoor, although outdoor only has full pours and certain beers. Would like a COVID-safe outdoor space with all the ticks, and even smaller pours. Outdoors is sick AF though, lots of space and cornhole. Indoors, you probably won't get COVID. Very ventilated and not too packed. Good selection, good brewskis. |
82 /100 UnWined - Bradlee (Beer Store) 3690-J KING ST. I think I've only bought wine from them, but their customer service is outstanding.
During the pandemic I'd ordered a bottle from them. They ran out, so they sent me a more expensive similar bottle at the same price and delivered it in inclement weather.
This on top of their usual good service. |
72 /100 847 S PICKETT ST. I've been there a number of times since they opened. It's fine when it's not too packed.
Half-pours are fine, but I'm missing the ability to get 3/4oz tasters, especially when they have their "15%"/10% beers on tap.
The place has terrible acoustics, even after some adjustments it's just so loud in there. It's strange because other breweries that are large don't seem to have the same kind of issue (Solace for instance is loud, but not LOUD).
Employees manning the bar range from really chill to really cold. It can be a mixed bag.
Food has been really good the times I've gone.
Depending on the number of staff around, getting beer-to-go in the front can be a hassle. Not always, but sometimes. Rare bottles of so-so beer are available and are absurdly overpriced to me, but people drink up that kind of stuff so those prices are here to stay.
Happy for their success, but I kind of miss the feel of their original location before it got gutted. |
78 /100 317 HOOFFS RUN DRIVE Decent sized space, I went there right after they opened (might have been their first day open) and it was packed. Decent cider variety on tap, at the time a few a bit more gimmicky, but most were pretty tasty. Staff was friendly, place is your typical warehouse brewery, but they did a good job making the place homey. |
86 /100 847 S PICKETT ST. Visited 3/2020. It is pretty near metrostation.. on the map. It takes actually quite long to walk from metro station to brewery and crossing river by walking takes time. Place is big, bright and colourful so it is perfect spot to visit on daylight. Beers were very good and half pours available for tickers were available. Very nice IPAs! |
84 /100 847 S PICKETT ST. I had no idea this happened! So cool to have a place that is actually open normal hours. Its about 20 minute walk from the nearest metro stop, which isn't terrible. Warehouse location, large open space. tables around, games on the walls. I think there is an outdoor area for warmer weather. largish bar, mercy sales area. The have food; quality was ok. The draw of course is the beer. I ordered a few half pours (no flights as I recall). Tons of options to choose from, starting of course with a variety of IPA's, a Gose or two, and some dark stuff. Quality pretty solid overall. Many of the taps as well as some others available to go, typically in 4 packs of 16 oz cans. A radically more user friendly experience and a great place to hang out. Would be nice if it were a tad closer to the metro, but so be it. |
74 /100 847 S PICKETT ST. Large place but good service. Lots of beers on tap. No flights but half pours are available. Food I ordered was good but pretty pricey. |
84 /100 317 HOOFFS RUN DRIVE Technically a farm cidery, right here in the City of Alexandria which is cool. Good sized space, typical industrial look, not too crowded or noisy but far from empty. Service was great. Wide variety of ciders. Mostly with fruit additives but one regular and one chopped. You can't create your own flight, but the flights available make sense. Prices within reason for this area. Ciders mix of quality but none bad. Industrial building near semi vibrant mixed use Carlyle area. Lots of parking but where is the frigging bike parking? (Also walkable to metro, if a fairly long walk, part of which is past vacant lots) |
70 /100 847 S PICKETT ST. Visited Sunday afternoon. Just a few minutes off of 495 if driving. Limited parking situation: limited street parking, parallel parking spots in front of the brewery, and a side parking lot in the back. Most of the parking was occupied but I found one or two open spots in the back of the lot. Definitely could be a challenge parking on busier days/releases.
Gift shop is right inside the entrance with bottles, cans, glasses, and other merch. I believe you can close out here too if you're getting stuff to go at the end. Table and upstairs seating to the right, head to the left for the taproom area. Big airy cafeteria style space with picnic and long tables, some side seating/counter space. Very loud with no sound deadening, reminds me of Solace's loud taproom. Hopefully they work on that.
Ordering seems a little confusing, I guess you can order anywhere there's bar space but sometimes a line also forms at the right hand register so I just went with that. A dozen or so beers available, menu wasn't totally accurate as a few beers were replaced. Menus are only on paper or you can check their website. A menu board or a couple digital menus would make things easier. Most beers available in full and half pours, a few more limited beers like the barrel projects are only in full pours. Decent beer prices. Didn't try the food but there are a couple appetizers and sandwich options, no sides so sandwiches seems a little expensive.
Don't see myself coming back regularly with the current parking and taproom situation, maybe once or twice every couple months but it's worth a stop if you're in the area or live nearby. |
70 /100 847 S PICKETT ST. Light airy large modern taproom, not industrial looking. Crowdedctoday, their second weekend, and very noisy, lines. Industrial area, I biked, people seem able to manage parking, not far to metro but not a great walk. Really you should bike here, but I didn't see bike parking. |
74 /100 847 S PICKETT ST. Awesome to finally have a place to drink a fuck ton of Aslin. This place is very new still and isn't brewing on site though the tanks are in the back. Bunch of taps, about 15 when I visited. Busy on first Friday of opening with big lines. Lots of their beer on tap with some experimental. Lines move slow. Food trucks serve the palate. Prices actually a little higher than their beer in Churchkey which is weird. No flights available but full and half pours. Service friendly but lines make it slow. Beer obviously top tier. Congrats on the big open guys! |
62 /100 Virtue Feed & Grain (Restaurant) 106 S UNION ST A happening place, great ambiance, crowded but the food and service are good, beer selection is average. |
76 /100 Columbia Firehouse (Restaurant) 109 S ST ASAPH ST It's a restaurant with good beer rather than a beer bar. Around 10 taps, everything I got was VA / DC and a couple of things were quite good (they had a gose from The Veil which is one of the best goses I ever had).
Food was quite good. Biscuits are amazing. They have lots of cocktails and wine too. Beer list is solid though. |
88 /100 3950 WHEELER AVE I love this place ! People are friendly and helpful and knowledgeable. Place is big Two bars A party room Plenty of tables. Lighting is good here. Service is awesome and made plenty of suggestions for me. Seems light 10 of there own beers on tap. Just there own beers including seasonal and limited edition. Food truck is here with burgers and sure smells good. ^ to 7 dollars a pint which might be high by a dollar are so. Overall must go to place when in D. C. area. Cheers! |
90 /100 7926 ALEXANDRIA PIKE, STE. 1 A pleasant surprise in Campbell County. The beers are all good -excellent. Michelle, the bartender, was knowledgeable and helpful and brings a positive vibe to the place. There is a food truck with top-end Bar-B-Que. The regulars are friendly to newcomers, and the place exudes comfortable friendliness. Well worth a stop if you are close by, or in need of positive vibes in your life. |
82 /100 Department of Beer and Wine (Beer Store) 2724 JEFFERSON DAVIS HIGHWAY Stopped in there when I was heading home from Rustico Alexandria. Nice sized location, however it almost feels too big for the amount of selection available. What it doesn't make up in bottle/can volume, it makes up in quality. It also has a fair number of taps, which is nice. |
70 /100 410 30TH AVE E, #103 Small taproom, lots of warm wood and lighting. About 8 taps, reasonably priced. Solid quality. No kitchen, but plenty of ordering options. |
86 /100 Pizzeria Paradiso - Old Town Alexandria (Restaurant) 124 KING ST Pizzeria Paradiso is the best of both world, excellent selection, coupled with a excellent beer list, with a number of rarities. The pizza is homemade and of great ingredients and the beer (particularly the bottle list) is very strong. |
78 /100 4724 STERKX RD Visited on a Saturday, early afternoon. It's a nicely done, small space, set off from the road a bit, so easy to drive by. The taproom is bar bones but well appointed, with a wood and gun metal feel. The very small brewing space is easily viewable. They had about 8 beers on tap. Between the ones I sampled, pinted and/or got to have elsewhere, they've all been at least in the "good" category, with a a couple exceptional offerings. The barkeep was super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. There weren't many people there, mostly what seemed to be local and regular. Definitely worth a visit if you happen to be in the area. Brewery #857. |
78 /100 Pizzeria Paradiso - Old Town Alexandria (Restaurant) 124 KING ST Similar in feel, look and beer menu to the other Pizza Paradiso locations. Good beer menu with focus on international imports, both in bottle list and tap. Lots of odd stuff turns up here, with plenty of sours and off-kilter choices interesting for your average beer nerd. Pizza is good as in other locations, and I dig the olive tray they dole out when you arrive. Good service. They do flights for $15 or so, four picks. Not exactly cheap but not back considering the international stuff you get usually. |
68 /100 Harris Teeter - Alexandria (Grocery Store) 4641 DUKE ST Visited in December 2017, when I was staying in a nearby hotel. Offered a choice of 30 or so singles, including a few Green Flash and a couple of Founders' single hop beers. A solid supermarket selection, particularly for the tourist. |
62 /100 Trader Joe’s - Alexandria (Grocery Store) 612 N SAINT ASAPH ST Visited in December 2017. This supermarket was close to my hotel and I got to try the Trader Joe's beers, which were a mixed bag in terms of quality but very cheap, and a grapefruit sculpin, which came from a small selection of broken up six packs. The Harris Teeter around the corner was better. |
82 /100 Department of Beer and Wine (Beer Store) 2724 JEFFERSON DAVIS HIGHWAY My local bottleshop. Ridiculous number of taps and always have something interesting. Good staffing Prices a little high but still worth a visit. |
76 /100 Rustico Restaurant - Alexandria (Restaurant) 827 SLATERS LN Good selection, limited but decent menu. Reasaonable prices. not too hard to get a table. |
74 /100 Pizzeria Paradiso - Old Town Alexandria (Restaurant) 124 KING ST Located in old town Alexandria so there’s street parking as well as a number of parking garages nearby. Not a big place which makes for a cozy atmosphere. Solid tap list with a more impressive bottle list. Solid pizza for the area served by a friendly staff. I’m not sure it’s a destination place but it’s a lovely way to spend a weekend afternoon |
80 /100 MOM’s Organic Market - Alexandria (Grocery Store) 3831 MT VERNON AVENUE This organic grocery store has a well curated selection of beers (also ciders and mead) not huge, but good for a store that size. It is a lovely store, and has decent parking, and good access by bike and transit (some may find the area sketchy for Alexandria, but its really not bad) I did not need service for my purchase of mead, but service on groceries is generally good. They also have a tap for growlers, though no on premises consumption. Though a grocery store, they have an organic restaurant called Naked Lunch which is pretty good. Their prices are not bad,and on mead they beat Total Wine. |
68 /100 410 30TH AVE E, #103 Pretty cool taproom. 8 beers on, flights of 4 are $12, which is pretty high given the location and relative so-so nature of these beers. Update - Nov. 6, 2017. Flights of 4 are now $10, and the beer quality was quite good today. |
76 /100 Rustico Restaurant - Alexandria (Restaurant) 827 SLATERS LN Small free parking lot in the back. This place is on the corner. Tables for seating and medium size bar. Late lunch and still a good half dozen patrons plus. Service was good along with good knowledge of beers being served. Selection was pretty good. Prices were pretty average. |
76 /100 Pizzeria Paradiso - Old Town Alexandria (Restaurant) 124 KING ST Dinner stop. I have been to the other two Paradiso’s - same pizza here, perhaps a bit less of a tap list. Nothing crazy here on tap or bottles, but you will not walk away thirsty. They did offer flights, but I ended up with half and a bottle. Service good. Lots of smaller tables which is good for the business traveler type. |
76 /100 3950 WHEELER AVE First stop of the evening, quick Uber ride from old town. This is a decent sized space in a warehouse building, open floor plan with a few tables, a lot of empty space, and a bar in the back. Fairly spartan decor other than the medal wall. They had 8 or 9 beers on draft as well as multiple bottles to go in coolers. Doing a decent business on a Tuesday afternoon/evening. The have flights of six for about $12, but as noted in previous reviews, its done on a ticket system. I was actually good with that, but I can see it being frustrating on really busy nights. You can also get 5 oz samples individually for 3-4$ each, which makes the flight a solid deal. I was actually fairly impressed with several of the beers I tried; the pils was solid, the Wit was excellent for style. Would surely return if I was in the area. |
54 /100 Harris Teeter - Alexandria (Grocery Store) 4641 DUKE ST Decent beer selection, though most grocery stores in this area seem to be getting a good selection like this. Lots of options, not too many that are great. Lots of seasonal packs, which is convenient. For groceries, it’s perfectly fine - just not a beer destination. |
70 /100 3950 WHEELER AVE Small, low-ceiling tap room with fiberboard tiling - this space could just as easily be a dmv - ambience aside, a nice spot in a nice town - obviously popular with the locals - came in the afternoon the day after Christmas and it was packed - eight beers in a pretty standard line-up, but ranged well in styles (although three ipas and a pale might be overkill) - the beer is well made, with the Porter and Pils being stand out - generous flights, and they have a nice approach with them where you only get one taster at a time so you can keep track of what you’re drinking and always have beer fresh from the tap - fast, friendly service - I’d not go out of my way to visit again, but I’ll certainly grab a sixer of the Pils the next time I’m in the DC area. |
60 /100 Safeway Bradlee (Grocery Store) 3526 KING STREET Basically a big standard suburban supermarket. It was renovated about a year ago, so the ambience is not bad. For a supermarket. Parking is easy enough . The selection is okay. There are singles, though not many. Prices are not bad for a supermarket, but not Total Wine levels of value. No particular reason for someone from outside the neighborhood to comevhere, but it’s my neighborhood supermarket and it’s good enough. |
80 /100 Spirits Food and Friends (Restaurant) 1200 TEXAS AVE Nice restaurant, sports bar feel. Good selection of brews, including locals. Friendly staff, seem to know their stuff. |
80 /100 Hokus Pokus (Beer Store) 4140 JACKSON ST. very nice liquor store, very good beer selection. warm beer shelve is not easily seen, kind of have to look for it. Matthew was very helpful, and extremely knowledgable. |
70 /100 Total Wine & More - Alexandria (Beer Store) 6240 LITTLE RIVER TURNPIKE A pretty big store with a wide variety of beers, most of which were popular yesterday (not to sound snobbish). The Special Release selection was ok. I’ll probably be going back just not jumping out of my seat at the opportunity. |
70 /100 3950 WHEELER AVE You know their beer, and it’s good stuff. Nice tasting room, decent service and prices. Fairly busy when I’ve been here, reliable food truck presence on weekends. |
70 /100 Virtue Feed & Grain (Restaurant) 106 S UNION ST This is a cool place down by the Potomac River. Very rustic look, lots of barn wood, warehouse industrial and brick. Lots of taps, but just a few really interesting things on tap. Food looked good, but didn’t partake. |
70 /100 Planet Wine (Beer Store) 2004 MOUNT VERNON AVE Nice small selection of decent craft beers, about on par with other small markets around such as Grape & Bean or the selection at a Red Apron location. Wine selection is bigger. Hours are a little limited, or at least were last time I stopped by. Attached to Evening Star, another NRG property. |
60 /100 Joe Theismann’s Restaurant (Restaurant) 1800 DIAGONAL RD Stopped in with GenDV110+OT before heading to Radagast’s gathering. Basic sports bar feel, clean and spacious. Only purpose for the stop was to try the house beer, which is not good. |
84 /100 Rustico Restaurant - Alexandria (Restaurant) 827 SLATERS LN Visited on a Sunday afternoon with GenDV110+OT, finally made it here. Just don’t get to Alexandria that often, and Ballston location is so close. Pity, because this was an excellent stop with service way better than Ballston. Large and well-appointed space. Sat at the bar, enjoyed numerous beers from their extensive and varied taplist. Great place. |
70 /100 Union Street Public House (Restaurant) 121 S UNION ST. An okay pub down near the Potomac River in Old Town. They have had a few "hard to find" locals on tap, which is really nice. Bartenders are very busy, but are very nice Low-lighting. It’s fills up a lot with locals and tourists, so move along if it looks too crowded. |
80 /100 Columbia Firehouse (Restaurant) 109 S ST ASAPH ST This place always has a very nice, but small, beer menu. Solid mix of local taps - almost all from VA, but I think I’ve seen some other places in the region making their way in there. Bottles are also almost all from VA, but I know there’s been a few DC options available. Food is very tasty. This is also a good place to go for people who aren’t into beer - lots of wine and cocktail options. |
