“Visited afternoon of Friday 3th August 2023 - micro bottle/can shop slap bang in Brighton station. Despite diminutive size packs in a good range of cans/bottles across the fridges/shelves. Helpful staff member, prices a little steep - but great selection, especially local brews from like likes of the excellent Beak Brewery. Great place to pick up a few "train beers" for the trip back to London which is what we did, not bad at all.“

“Visited late evening Thursday 3rd August 2023 - know as either the "Long Man" or "Longman Of Wilmington" this is a pretty big corner pub located in the Brighton suburb of Patcham. Nice old pub with lots of seating across front and rear beer gardens, a decent selection across both cask and keg, friendly barman and ok prices, unsurprisingly the beer selection focuses on local "Long Man" brewed beers, and on cask were in very good condition. With friends in the area sure to visit again, and if you happen to find yourself in Patcham well worth a visit for locally brewed beers.“

“Visited early evening of Thursday 3rd August 2023 - having already just been to their "Sea Lanes" beach bar earlier that afternoon friends recommend we go to their original bar for a beer and burger. This one is well located with a good selection of beer across the UT electronic beer boards upon entering (bonus points for being a well maintained/often updated UT verified venue) Lots of local beers from the likes of Beak, Cloak+Dagger plus many other top range craft from around the UK. With location prices are a little steep but give samples when asking. Not a massive place but an ok amount of seats spread across the 2 levels. Food wise the burgers really were lovely. Overall well worth a visit, just keep in mind the busy tourist heavy location means it can be crazy busy at high peak times apparently, was not too bad on our early Thursday evening visit though“

“Visited early afternoon Thursday 3rd August 2023 - situated with other shops/food places making up a new "Sea Lanes" swimming development on the beach front. A perfect location looking over the beach this place has loads of outside seating making a great summer place to drink out, inside there is still a good few tables next to and in the room adjacent to the bar. Service was quick and efficient even though with the great weather the bar was very busy. Very good selection (about 10 taps on our visit) from the likes of Beak/Cloak+Dagger/Track/Verdant, they also have fridges with cans to drink in or go to take onto the beach etc. Sitting above this place on the terrace with friends in the hot summer sun looking over the beach necking pints of 3.8% Track Sonoma was a highlight of our Brighton trip. Although this venue is open all year round my rating reflects the peak summer drinking experience, and for that there is really nowhere better in Brighton. Highly recommended.“

“Visited early afternoon Thursday 3rd August 2023 - very close to Brighton Station, have been here many times but forgot to rate. Nice old pub but with a very good selection across both cask/keg - featuring many locals such as Beak/Abyss/Cloak&Dagger. They do third pours here so very ticker friendly, prices are what you would expect for central Brighton, staff are friendly and clued up on the breweries providing the beers here, overall a must visit when in Brighton.“

“Perhaps the best taplist in Brighton. They had 15+ taps, with 1/3 pints available. They had stuff from The Kernel, Vault City, Ascension Cider, and more. Friendly, informed staff that never keeps you waiting long. They also host The Lankan, a Sri Lankan kitchen in the back that offers kottu and other stuff, with plenty of vegan options. Definitely worth visiting.“

“Centrally located, with several floors of limited seating. When I visited, they had a Brewing Brothers tap takeover (TTO). They do 1/3 pints and tastes, so I tried a few form the TTO. Wasn't too enthralled with the beers, but maybe I'd have better luck on a more normal day? Probably worth a look on a Brighton beer crawl.“

“Located on a very quiet street that you wouldn't otherwise be stumbling through unless you're looking for the place. Cool spot -- tiny interior with 5 taps plus a bottle pour when I visited. 1/2 or full pints, but staff will do tastes. Taplist was OK; I found a couple things of mild interest. Friendly service. Worth a look when in Brighton.“

“Standard, more old school BrewDog bar with a few outside seats and a large interior. 30 taps, with 1/3 pints and tasters available, plus a good bottle selection. Decent but limited guest taps. Friendly service. Worth hitting when in Brighton.“

“Tiny bottle shop right at Brighton train station. They had a sandwich board out when I arrived, advertising lambic and other craft beers. Selection is limited but well-curated and decently priced, maybe a bit inflated. Worth a look when you arrive or leave Brighton.“

“Nice spot close to BrewDog and not that far from the beach. Plenty of spice inside but I can imagine it gets packed in evenings. 20+ taps, with everything available in 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 and full pints; they’ll do tastes as well. Taplist had a lot of generic German stuff but also lots of Brighton Bier taps/casks, some cider, and other UK stuff. Prices are very reasonable. Not the most interesting taplist but you’ll probably find something mildly interesting here. Nice spot — worth hitting on a Brighton beer crawl.“

“Очень тесное помещение с огромным количесвом людей, шумно безумно, но зато с крафтовым духом. Есть большой выбор пивасом, только цены не некоторые вещи дико завышены, есть еда, но в виде закусок больше а не полноценные блюда. Норм, но не лучший.“

“Хорошее атмосферное место, есть как и Английская классика так и крафт в холодильнике. Красивый как и экстерьер так и интерьер, сделанный в классическом английском стиле. Радуает что можно взять разные тары для пива. В целом хорошо.“

“A very fitting name, because this is a very small place. We managed to get two seats and chatted with one of the regulars. Very good and varied selection with 4 casks, 10 regular taps (leaning toward american style stuff) and some belgian bottles.“

“Pretty rough and punky bar with an attitude. Beer selection not impressive with some daft and craft, and a few cask taps but only two in operation. The one cask beer we tried was in really poor condition. Maybe that could have something to do with the imcompetent and unfriendly staff.“

“Was shown this backstreet two-roomed gem by a local friend, while on a trip down from London on 23rd July 2022. Fifteen taps serve up to four casks, two ciders and nine keg lines mostly from small and micro breweries. The casks were well-kept. As per the previous review it was certainly a friendly and jovial vibe inside, and its small size makes for an intimate interior, with a variety of comfortable seating. This pub is well worth the effort of finding, and is guaranteed not to disappoint.“

Shelter Hall (Restaurant)
KINGS ROAD ARCHES
“Visited April 2022. A huge place, spread over three floors of a circular purpose-built venue near the west pier. Note that it's difficult to find from the seafront road; the main access is from the beach promenade below. It was very busy on our visit (a weekday afternoon in the school holidays) and we had to queue for five minutes or so. There's lots of tables outside overlooking the beach, which is jolly pleasant; inside there's the usual streetfood market arrangement of various restaurant hatches (7 different traders) and a bar around the edge, with canteen style seating in the middle. Ordering was (sadly) through an app (which we had to find online as the QR code on the table didn't work) - obviously you need to be aware that if you get food from different traders it may arrive at different times. Having said that, everything we ordered was delivered very swiftly by the friendly and efficient serving staff. The food quality was superb, although prices were a bit higher than you normally pay for streetfood. On the drinks front, in addition to a few macros there's half a dozen craft kegs and a further half dozen cans from local producers such as Abyss, Unbarred, Lost Pier, Bedlam, Brighton Bier and Trenchmore Farm. Overall, it feels a bit streetfood-gone-corporate (possibly due to the location and the purpose built venue), but if you want great food and craft beer on the seafront this is definitely a good option.“

Katenya (Grocery Store)
5 FENCHURCH WALK
“Visited April 2022. A couple of minute's walk out of the east entrance to Brighton station, this is a medium-sized Japanese supermarket with all the usual (to us Brits) weird, sometimes wonderful and often baffling produce that such places stock. My wife loves Japanese food & was in her element buying sushi ingredients and so on. For Ratebeerians the main thing if interest here will be the sakés - there were about 20 different ones which is more than I've seen anywhere to date (although I'm sure there are better collections elsewhere). I don't know enough about sakés (or the Japanese language!) to say what they were, but to my untutored eye there did appear to be quite a range of different styles and different producers. Based on the prices, some of them were either rare or high quality (although I should note that Japanese sakés always seem very highly priced to me!). Beerwise there were three standard Japanese brews and two South Korean ones. The proprietor was making fresh sushi; she didn't speak much English but seemed friendly. If you're seeking out different saké styles or different Japanese regions, this may be worth a look given its proximity to the station.“

“Surprised that I hadn't visited this one before. It is a corner bar to the east of the pavilion, near the law courts and police station. It has a mix of modern and old style bar with a range of punters. A beerboard shows what is available. Just the Brighton Bier range on our visit. Worth a look.“

“This is an elegant theatre bar right in the tourist heart of Brighton, and bnoy iss it touristy. There is table service only, prompt and friendly but not what I require. Seating inside and to the front, in the sunshine. I did have to go in to see what beers were on as the table service girl would only give descriptions not beer names. Not a beer hunters pub but if your thing is elegance take a look.“

“Micropub tap in the North Laines area of Brighton on a quiet street, an opened up garage unit. Pretty basic inside and due to the sunny weather all opened up and seating to the front. Not sure that Simple Things are brewing at presentno beers on but a pretty handy guest list on tap. Definitely one to seek out.“

“This is a small, 2 roomed locals pub just off the front in West Brighton. Very friendly and jovial. There is a beer board on the left as you enter with the bar in front. The beer list is certainly large for a small pub but everything is well kept and well served. Very much a hidden gem imo. One to seek out.“

“This is a pub that we had walked past before but thought we would give it a go on this occasion. It's a bit weird and wacky in character, all sorts of stuff on the walls, down to an old washing machine in one corner. There is a long bar, manfully worked by a young chap. A decent mix of beers to be had. Pleasant atmosphere. Glad we took the time to try it.“

“Thought I'd rated this when I visited a few years ago (pre-Covid) but I obviously failed to. We visited it after a work meeting in Brighton on a gloomy November midweek afternoon. I appreciate it wasn't exactly peak times, but the bar itself seemed similarly gloomy - dark inside, with a glum barman and a smattering of quiet, contemplative punters who seemed to be drowning their sorrows. I remember there being a large if unremarkable beer choice; the one I had (one of their own brews) I quite enjoyed. We found the place a bit miserable and quickly moved on. I appreciate we probably didn't see it at it's best, but given how many other great places there are in Brighton, and the similarly ambivalent reviews from others, I doubt I'd be tempted to revisit (despite the handy, easy-to-find location).“

“Visited on 30 June 2021. A nice, clean, modern taproom, about ten minutes walk from the main station. The beers were all their own stuff. They had a good number on tap, and some more in cans (although I actually tried a number of their beers on tap in other spots around the same visit, which weren’t on here). We sat outside in their little patio. Unbarred beers are solid, although they are a bit too keen on adjuncting everything for my liking. You should definitely get to try a few new things here. It’s the most polished brewery tap from what must be the biggest brewery in Brighton. Definitely worth a visit.“

“Visited on 29 June 2021. It's very much a BrewDog bar, and in recent times, they all become much of a muchness. Nice interior, and really uses the space well. The staff and super pleasant, but speaking to some local former staff, they are definitely way understaffed. Service is all through the app, and it is really slow. It was ok when they were dead, but I waited 25 minutes during a moderately busy period, before I had to go to the bar and ask to take the bottle I'd ordered away, as I no longer had time to drink it. Beer selection is ok. Too many really pricy guest taps, which I guess have hung around. BrewDog beers aren't very interesting, for the most part. It's fine. You'll have a few new beers, but don't go way out of your way.“

“Visited on 27 June 2021. Probably my favourite beer spot in Brighton. A converted garage–this place is small. Utilitarian interior. About ten keg taps, which are about 60% Good Things. They have stuff on here that you won't find anywhere else. The guest list is solid, and there's a great, and well priced, can selection. Staff are very knowledgeable and personable. Really good to chat about the beers available. Just a wonderful spot.“

The Pond (Bar)
49 GLOUCESTER ROAD
“Visited on 29 June 2021. A nice interior, with well spaced out tables. Seems to be a popular haunt, even on a Monday afternoon. They have about 10 taps and some cask. Some really good finds here - nearly all local stuff. Abyss, Cloak+Dagger and BRZN (whose beers I haven't seen anywhere else, and are really rather good). They don't do thirds, which is a small mark against them. Otherwise, a really nice pub, with a few beers that will definitely interest. They have a Korean Boa kitchen, serving up excellent small plates. The loaded fries were delicious.“

“Visited on 27 June 2021. A bit of a dive bar, but in a deliberate and well measured way. Good service. I think there would be quite a good atmosphere and some music happening in non-COVID times. Beer selection was ok. They had a number of local breweries; Burning Sky, Cloak+Dagger and Dark Star among them. None of the beers are especially exciting. It's mostly different pales and the odd accessible sour on keg and then fairly standard pales and bitters on cask. Worth popping in.“

40 /100 27 GLOUCESTER PLACE
“Visited on 29 June 2021. A large, dark space. There's evidence of some games going on, but people were tabled where these should happen. Like most of Laine's pubs, there's a really 'sticky' sense to it; like you don't really want to touch any of the surfaces (irrespective of COVID). I would say it's just a bit uninviting. Beer selection was ok. About five of their own beers, which really aren't that great. Some guests, including a couple of decent things, but nothing particularly great, and a number of macro and supermarket level craft beers. Their beers aren't great, and they have bars in London, so they aren't even novel. Honestly, I couldn't really recommend it as a 'must'. Lots of better places to go.“

“Visited on 29 June 2021. Really nice interior; exposed wood, not too much clutter. Low ceiling, but not too imposing or claustrophobic. Beer selected is really quite broad, and there's surprisingly little Dark Star (or there was when I visited). Seven cask beers (four of them Dark Star) and eleven keg (all guest). A good selection of some local breweries, including Downloads and Beak, but more things from further afield; Overtone, Kernel, and a few Belgian and German offerings. They also have a pretty good bottle and can selection. Not huge, but some quality German and Belgian offerings. I also managed to find some Sussex Small Batch at very reasonable prices. It's definitely a must, when you're in Brighton, even though it's ultimately macro owned.“
