68 /100 Llandoger Trow (Bar) KING STREET Midafternoon on a Tuesday and this was the busiest pub I had been into. Nice old building. Skankiest mouldiest bog I have ever been into. OK range of beers. Nothing particularly exciting. Definitely a real ale drinkers place. |
66 /100 17-18 KING STREET By this point I was a tad annoyed that the craft places were all yet to open on a Tuesday afternoon. A cavernous place. So empty my voice echoed. A wide array of beers but nothing that particularly excited me. Chose a couple and then drank up quickly. |
64 /100 WELSH BACK Prett large venue, which was emphasised by the lack of punters inside. Although it was a very warm day so there was a big group of lively students sat outside. Sports bar decor. Very corporate. Big screens. Their beers are OK at best. The kind so place you visit for ticks (if you are not interested in the quality of the beer) and then depart ASAP. |
70 /100 Bridge Inn, Bristol (Bar) 16 PASSAGE STREET Visited on a Tuesday at around 14:00. Trad set up - kinds tired but lived in. Of the pubs I visited this was my fave. In hindsight i could have stayed longer because this was the place with the most new brewery ticks for me. A few craft beers, a few keg. Pretty much all new to me. Friendly enough staff. Had a chat with one of the other punters. Food looked good. Will be in Bristol again for a meeting at some point so will have to go back and try it. |
68 /100 Llandoger Trow (Bar) KING STREET This is a pub that hadn't been on my beer radar before but I had known the history of this place with its links to Daniel Defoe and the writing of Robinson Crusoe. It's a two roomed pub from what I could see with a modern looking bar to the left as you walk in. The rest of the pub has been thoughtfully restored with timber beams and wooden floors in one room and tiles in the bar area. Lots of beers on offer but many are of the mass distribution ilk, the pub was pretty quiet on our visit. Still well worth visiting when on King Street. |
78 /100 Beer Emporium (Bar) 15 KING STREET My favourite of the top 3 beers on this street, not because of the beer selection but because of the experience. It’s an underground bar with low ceilings and feels like a cellar. No beer list written anywhere — you just look at the tap handles to order. 1/3 pints available, free tastes also available. I was served by a charming Glaswegian lady. Lots of Moor on tap. Mostly kegs, mostly traditional styles, a couple of casks too. Definitely worth a visit when you’re in Bristol. |
76 /100 Small Bar (Bar) 31 KING STREET Great spot super close to many other top spots in town. Not *that* small, and they certainly aren’t short of taps: over 20. 1/4 pints available of all beers. Mostly modern styles with a decent variety of mostly British breweries. Staff were pleasant but not knowledgeable about the beers. Solid spot — definitely a mandatory visit on a Bristol pub crawl. |
78 /100 CATHEDRAL WALK, MILLENIUM PROMENADE The newer, bigger and better BrewDog location in town, slightly further from the train station than the Baldwin location. But if you visit just one, make it this one. 30 taps, with an interesting guest tap list when I visited. Friendly but rather incompetent service when I went — knew nothing about the beer and charged me wrong. Beautiful spot though and the guest taps make not worthwhile. |
74 /100 BrewDog Bristol Baldwin (Bar) 58 BALDWIN STREET The original BrewDog location in Bristol, closer to the centre, and a smaller location than Harbourside. 20+ taps, 1/3 pints available as all BrewDog locations, free tastes, etc. Taplist was decent when I visited, with some interesting cans/bottles I hadn’t seen at many other locations in the UK (Trillium, Cycle). Pleasant service. Worth a hit when in town. |
74 /100 17-18 KING STREET Right in the centre, adjacent to two other top spots and a must-hit when in Bristol. Traditional-feeling bar, but with 32 taps of mostly non-traditional craft beers. 1/3 pints available, plus staff will do free tasters. Taplist wasn’t super interesting to me given how many taps there were, but this is probably just reflective of how much the craft beer scene has been taken over my hazies and adjuncted kettle sours. Friendly service and a comfortable homey environment. Definitely worth a stop when doing the circuit in Bristol. |
66 /100 32 UPPER YORK STREET Visited on Friday 6th October 2023 around 2130.
Took an Uber from Little Martha taproom by Temple Meads station ... cost around a tenner.
Small bar on a dark back street. Busy inside but we got a table on the street ... our view was a large line of revellers queueing all the way along the street waiting for a 2200 opening of a club.
Service was fine and they had 5 beers of their own on tap, nothing particularly exciting ... think 3.2 average.
Overall not a go to venue but we combined it with the ring of 5 venues on the RB map (including this one) ... 3 of the 5 (starting here) worth the visit, 2 not. Not sure if you get these beers elsewhere so ticking one was (and is) the sole reason to visit. |
74 /100 Hillgrove Porter Stores (Bar) 53 HILLGROVE STREET NORTH Visited around 2300 on Friday 6th October 2023.
Dawkins brewery closed in May '23 and as such nothing to do with them anymore. Dawkins removed from entry name and affiliated brewery.
Nice back street boozer with traditional interior doing a good trade with the locals on a warm Friday evening.
Service was prompt and friendly and we joined some welcoming locals on their large table.
Beer wise, a mix of largely South West micros, with 4 ciders, 4 keg lines and 8 casks.
Overall a decent local and the best of the ones in this area. |
68 /100 Hare on The Hill (Bar) 41 THOMAS STREET NORTH KINGSDOWN Visited around 2230 on Friday 6th October 2023.
Busy back street corner local ... rammed inside and a crowd outside also. Service not too bad tbh and we squeezed on the end of a table.
Beer range was fine but nothing to get excited about. Couple of cask ticks for me from On Point and Quantock ... Keg range wasn't particularly inspiring but did carry a Biere De Saison by the Kernel.
Overall worth swinging by if in the neighbourhood but far from a go to venue. |
60 /100 Canteen (Bar) THE CANTEEN WEST, 80 STOKES CROFT Went to visit at 2200 on Friday 6th October and was asked (by the door staff) for £6 to enter.
Maybe not!
I'll rate this as a straight 3 but more so wanted to enter a rate to point out to folks this is a pay to enter venue, certainly late evening on the weekends. |
38 /100 Crofters Rights (Bar) 117-119 STOKES CROFT Visited around 2200 on Friday 6th October 2023.
What a shit hole.
Only popped in as walking past.
Bouncers inside the door ... friendly enough mind.
Run down place with 4 taps, service was fine. I had the Crofters Rights Lager ... some kind of re-badge (also an IPA on UT of a similar vein). Made some notes but really can't be arsed trying to figure out what it was. Fairly busy but we got a seat, loud and aimless bar ... right mix of people.
Not the worst pub I've been in if I'm honest but do yourself a favour and scroll past. RB showing 16 taps, which I've edited, maybe somewhere worth going many years ago. |
72 /100 Beer Emporium (Bar) 15 KING STREET Another nice beer destination in King Street
Quite good selection and a fine patio outside
|
72 /100 Llandoger Trow (Bar) KING STREET What a stunning place. Magnificent old pub
Lovely square right outside with a lot of other pubs in the same area
Also close to the canal
Fine atmosphere and a decent selection
Would love to come back
|
70 /100 WELSH BACK It is probably the location that is the main thing here
Lovely square right outside with a lot of other pubs in the same area
Also close to the canal
Fine atmosphere and a decent selection
I did not rally become a big fan of their beer
But would gladly go back
|
74 /100 BrewDog Bristol Baldwin (Bar) 58 BALDWIN STREET You know what you get when you enter a BD
Good beer selection
This one was really small
Fine location in the city center close to the canal
Absolutely recommendable
|
78 /100 HAWKINS LANE, FINZELS REACH Nice brewpub with a lovely location close to the canal
Fine atmosphere and a solid selection
Absolutely recommendable
|
64 /100 Shakespeare Tavern (Bar) 68 PRINCE STREET Greene King pub near harbourside in the city centre. Choice of five on cask, not all GK beers either.A few more mundane keg beers also. |
60 /100 31-35 COTHAM HILL A typical B&K fit out, quite a large space. Very food orientated with mostly bang average beers. |
82 /100 Kings Head, Bristol (Bar) 60 VICTORIA STREET Very narrow pub with a heritage interior. Beautiful old dark wood throughout. Long bar down the right hand side with most of the seating further back. This pub was closed for a long time, reopening a year or so ago under Good Chemistry's tenure. It's a welcome return. Having drank in Bristol for 10 years or more I'd never visited until yesterday. Four cask lines (with decent variety), plus around 6 keg lines which were mostly the brewery's own beers |
90 /100 17-18 KING STREET Visitado diciembre 2022 |
62 /100 WELSH BACK Visitado diciembre 2022 |
86 /100 HAWKINS LANE, FINZELS REACH Visita en diciembre 2022
Moderno y amplio buena selección de cervezas. Sirven pizzas que elaboran en el propio local. Muy recomendable. |
56 /100 White Hart (Greene King) (Bar) LOWER MAUDLIN STREET Stooped in here waiting for the Brisstol Flyer bus at the bus station, as this place is literally just around the corner. Outside looks great, welcoming. Inside however is another story. This palce was very well worn and falling into disrepair. All of the clientele seemed a bit down, ginving the place a grim atmosphere. I could not wait to finish my pint and get out. Besides the usual Greene King casks, they did have one on from Bristol Beer Factory. |
76 /100 Shakespeare Tavern (Bar) 68 PRINCE STREET Last day in Bristol. Stopped into this small pub dripping with history. Oh, if those walls could talk. Small, cozy interior, bar up front more seating in a room around the back. 5 cask handles plus a few taps. Food is available. Fast, friendly service. Nice palce to sit out a late winter squall. |
74 /100 31-35 COTHAM HILL After visiting the Bristol Art gallery, we took a 15 minute walk up to this location. Set in a vibrant , small neighborhood, ther'e s this taproom/kitchen, newer construction, collection of tables. Sunday roast menu today! We chose this place because the menu was more diverse than pizza, a little bit of something for everyone. Small selection of house taps with 1 or 2 casks. Food was good, beer was OK. |
76 /100 53 COLSTON STREET Late Sunday afternoon stroll in Bristol. Absolutely dead when we walked in, business picked up a bit shortly thereafter. Pretty modern design spread across two levels, nestled into a hillside just at the top of the Christmas Steps. Interios has a laid baack feel, including the availabliity of plush, cushy easy chairs set into small groups. Only a few beers on tap. Food menu looked like pizzas. Great vibe and very comfortable, but could use a few more draft options. |
70 /100 32 UPPER YORK STREET So lucky to have stumbled across this place, as it is brand new and wasn't included on my itnerary. Tiny place, and that space is shared with a coffee roaster. Just a handful of tables. Very small serving area, but there is a cooler so take away product is available. Just on the edge of Stokes Croft. |
76 /100 HAWKINS LANE, FINZELS REACH Beautiful location on the river, one of the larger places I've been to on this trip..New, modern, seating on several levels. Good tap list, focus on IPAs and stouts. Food available through on-site vendor. Still waiting for that Wow! beer. |
80 /100 Merchants Arms (Bar) 5 MERCHANTS ROAD Found this using the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. well worth the stop. Corner pub, looks like it's been there a while. Woodden interrio with a fire going in one end. Small bar with a few casks, but all really good. Lots of locals, neighborhood vibe. Some food available, but no real kitchen. i concur with CAMRA on this being a top notch selection. |
88 /100 Bag O’ Nails (Bar) 141 ST. GEORGES ROAD This place may not be for everbody. But I loved it. Do you like cats? Then this is place, cats everywhere, six on my visit, but I've heard it can be up to 19. Great cask selection too. Tine little, damp pub, cozy inisde, but so much character. Record player playing old vinyl. Service was amazing too. My wife said there was some cat odor, but I didn't notice too much as I have 4 cats at home. Now one of my favorite pubs in the world. |
72 /100 WELSH BACK Located in the old city near the wharves. Modern interior, Very quiet on a Thursday afternoon. Lots of their own taps available. Pretty spacious interior, neat, clean. |
80 /100 Llandoger Trow (Bar) KING STREET Another ancient pub with wonderful Tudor architecture. Spacious interior, small side rooms. Classic pub interior, serving bar and tables with chairs. Good selection of regional craft taps with a few cask options. So nice to see so many classic pubs in the old city. |
84 /100 17-18 KING STREET Historical pub in Bristol old city. Near the wharves, it has a history of shanghaiing sailors into the Royal Navy. Besides that it has a lovely, classic pub interior, several small rooms. An amazing selection of regional casks, there was a food menu also. |
76 /100 Bridge Inn, Bristol (Bar) 16 PASSAGE STREET Small corner pub, and I do mean small. Inside is tight but comfy, but there is additonal covered seating on the curb. Small selection of cask ales, but the two I tried were top notch, one of them a new listing for RateBeer (score!). Several Belgian bottles available also. Great service. Unfortunately the kitchen was closed on the day I was there. Service was top notch. Very intimate on the inside. |
68 /100 Seven Stars (Bar) 1 THOMAS LANE This place is squeezed into a tiny alley right behind the Fleece. Very old, historic pub, and a little bit frayed around the ages. A handful of regional cask ales, lines in good condition. Pretty small on the inside, but with a fire going, it was warm and welcoming. Worth a stop if in the Old Town. |
80 /100 BrewDog Bristol Baldwin (Bar) 58 BALDWIN STREET This is probably one of the smallest BrewDogs I've been in. Food menu wa slimited to pizzas & salads. Cooler only had the BrewDog staples. Other than that, it's all BrewDog vibe; good beer, good music and good food. 25+ taps including a few guests |
70 /100 THE OLD FISH MARKET, 59-63 BALDWIN STREET Everything about this place screams classic pub. Big wooden bar, ambient lighting, variety of tables and seating options. All casks are Fuller's, taps are more readily avaialble stuff (macros). Food menu is a bit more upscale than pub grub. Bustling on a Tuesday evening. |
80 /100 Kings Head, Bristol (Bar) 60 VICTORIA STREET I have been to this pub before as I have admired the carriage set up previously, but it has failed to come up with any new beers for me in the past, so not registered. It's very different now it is owned by Good Chemistry and what a beautiful little pub it is. It's now very friendly, carries differing beers and is a delight. It is also very handy for Temple Meads Station, so wins on all counts. A pub I will definitely return to next time I am here. |
72 /100 HAWKINS LANE, FINZELS REACH I approached this along a walkway next to the River Avon from the Victoria Street Bridge and it's quite a pleasant approach to make. There are tables outside overlooking the river but much too cold for that in January, having said this the inside isn't that much warmer. It has the stripped back look so popular with modern bars and wooden benches. The bar is on your left as you enter with enthusiastic staff, it was a bit of a job to select my winners, but there were lots of tasters to be had. The beers are all Left Handed Giant whether produced at the main site or the smaller kit in here. It's a little over utilitarian downstairs, it looked a little cosier upstairs, where the toilets are. Yes I will revisit when in Bristol again but its not my favourite venue. |
