62 /100 Arpico Wine Store (Beer Store) 147 GALLE ROAD Don’t be fooled by the name, it’s just a liquor store. Much better than the ultra seedy Royal Wine Store down the road. They have around 15 beers from the two breweries on the island - Lion and Heineken. Mostly 8.8% malt liquors/imperial pilsners, but there is also a smattering of normal pale lagers and the obligatory Lion Stout. Don’t expect anything exciting. The fridges are very weak or not even turned on, so don’t bank on hitting any malt liquors straight after purchasing. Card payments are accepted. Bring your own bag to carry the beers home. Also: it’s located on the basement level. Don’t bother with the supermarket — they only sell alcohol in wine shops and bars in Sri Lanka. |
46 /100 220 GALLE ROAD Probably the only pub in the Mount Lavinia neighbourhood. Serves the usual Sri Lanka selection — a couple of normal local pale lagers (~4%), a couple of local turbo lagers (8.8%), and Lion Stout (also 8.8%) — as well as a cider and an imported lager. Service is fine. Food portions are massive. I guess it’s ok for a place in a country that is not about beer at all. |
64 /100 Cloud Red (Bar) 59, ANANDA COOMARASWAMY MAWATHA Rooftop bar on the 26th floor of Cinnamon Red hotel. Views are great plus relax atmosphere make this a good place for a drink. They specialize on cocktails. Bottled beers only, but they serve them chilled well so it’s worth it. |
38 /100 Taphouse by RnR (Bar) NO 10, DUTCH HOSPITAL SHOPPING PRECINCT, COLOMBO FORT This place was pretty busy when I was here on a Saturday night, but there was a street food festival going on outside. They don't have any choice these days - just Lion lager. Not even the stout. |
30 /100 Taphouse by RnR (Bar) NO 10, DUTCH HOSPITAL SHOPPING PRECINCT, COLOMBO FORT Inside - loud club music (not my thing).
Outside - band playing, but too loud if trying to discuss stuff with anyone!
Beer - Lion Lager + commercial piffle.
Food - mixed grill was ok & price not excessive, but limited choice.
Despite being within spitting distance of our hotel (Hotel City Rest) we never felt the desire to return for a second visit. |
40 /100 Taphouse by RnR (Bar) NO 10, DUTCH HOSPITAL SHOPPING PRECINCT, COLOMBO FORT An atmospheric location in the Fort is a positive. Tap beer is now only limited to Lion Lager along with a few mainstream green bottle lagers. This is as good as it gets in Colombo for beer options! |
40 /100 Taphouse by RnR (Bar) NO 10, DUTCH HOSPITAL SHOPPING PRECINCT, COLOMBO FORT Well, it’s not easy to get a decent beer place in SL / Colombo. This one has the ubiquitous Lion Lager on draft. But that’s about it. Still bringing forward the excuse of the flooding, no other beers available on draft, not much better in bottle, despite almost all liquor shops now stocking Lion Stout / Strong or ABC Stout. So don’t be mislead by the name... (FYI - was rebranded a few years ago from "Brewery by O!") |
84 /100 Cricket Club Cafe (Bar) 34 QUEEN’S ROAD Solid sports club, cricket theme. Great food, great service, limited beer selection. It’s Colombo, what do you expect. |
68 /100 Taphouse by RnR (Bar) NO 10, DUTCH HOSPITAL SHOPPING PRECINCT, COLOMBO FORT Lion stout draft, decent food, great atmosphere. Not a beer Mecca at all, but still nice even if it’s Lion. |
58 /100 Cricket Club Cafe (Bar) 34 QUEEN’S ROAD A western style sportsbar specialising in... cricket! Good curry and western food and above all, 650 ml bottles of Lion Stout aswell as Carlsberg and local lager on tap. In the suburb of Kollupitiya south of town. 300 rupees for a tuktuk from town. |
56 /100 Buzz @ The Gateway Hotel (Bar) NEGOMBO ROAD, SEEDUWA Lion brewery affiliated. Lion Stout in 625ml tall bottles.
After renovations there might be a new bar in the new wing, still awaiting liquor licence approval!
Ask for Mr. Collin if u need a couple bottles of takeaway from the bar |
46 /100 Taphouse by RnR (Bar) NO 10, DUTCH HOSPITAL SHOPPING PRECINCT, COLOMBO FORT Not actually a brewery, but it is the place in Colombo to try Lion beer (owned by the brewery), and has Lion Stout on tap along with the other Lion offerings.
Located in the Dutch Hospital entertainment area, it’s a somewhat trendy bar with a spacious interior (if you want aircon and slightly loud music), as well as a few tables outside.
There’s also a reasonable food selection.
A word of warning, although it maybe open earlier, they will not serve beer until 17:00. Also, you must eat to order alcohol, although this can just be a small snack and once you say that you’ve eaten it’s fine.
There’s not may places to get the local beers in Colombo, but this is worth visiting if you are in the area after a day of fumes, bad smells, crazy traffic and sightseeing. The courtyards of the Dutch Hospital area provide a very welcome escape from the chaos outside. |
