“Called in after visiting the Jodrell Bank observatory nearby. First time in Congleton, and this appeared to be along a nice town centre street full of interesting independent shops, cafes and bars. It's a fairly spacious place, with big comfortable sofas and coffee tables providing a comfortable setting. Bar itself is home to a nice array of cask, eschewing unrealistically expensive craft options for more down to earth offerings from the likes of Summer Wine, Wincle and Dancing Duck, all in very good condition. 2 keg ciders, one box. Lots of Belgian beer in the fridge, though nothing outside of the standard 'classic' range. Standard pub food available, and films seem to be shown downstairs. Nice feel about the place, owners clearly passionate about presenting a comfortable, interesting bar with decent food and beer.“

“This was a bit of a surprise, a nice little bottle shop with a bar area. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was busy but still very pleasant. There was a very good selection of local, British and Belgian beers, but also a number of German and American ones available, plus 3 cask beers on tap. Good beer, and good prices. I’d certainly visit again if I was in town.“

“Is it a Pub is it a Cafe is it an Off Licence? It’s all of the above. Marvelous! My new favorite place in Congleton. Two Beers on tap which change once done and a choice of 300+ bottles which you can drink in or drink out. If you cant find something that you like then your just not trying! Knowledgeable staff always happy to help you decide if a bit stuck.“

“It’s a sweetie shop for real ale drinkers. If you can’t find a beer in here you like you’ve not tried hard enough. I can’t think of another place where you can sit and drink from a choice of over 200 beers and ciders. 2 draught pumps which are always a good variety and kept well. Friendly and helpful owners. If you’ve not been its a must and if you have been I’m sure you agree with me. Stock is always changing so there is always something new to try even if you find a favourite. Even if yr the driver the opportunity to take away as many bottles as you want or can carry is another great feature. Barleyhops is a unique experience I’d highly recommend.“

“Great selection of Ales, mainly British Micro-Breweries, You can choose a bottle, sitin and drink it or take away. Great loyalty card setup as well. Two local ales always available and change on a regular basis. Not open the same hours as pubs, therefore they call themselves a beer-cafe. Great idea and worth a visit.“

“New beer bottle shop in Congleton. This was originally an internet shop which now has a shop in Congleton town centre. Range is good, mainly British with lots of local beers. Small Belgian and German range. The shop also has 2 real ales on handpump with seating area“

“Fairly average Wetherspoons, they offer CAMRA members a 20% discount on food. Beer range was fair and mostly local. The only other thing was that they got my food order slightly wrong and gave me rice instead of chips with my chicken, the waitress then haired off so quickly I was unable to catch her to tell her it was wrong“

“Quick stop enroute, after GBBF. Nice traditional decor but interesting new beers, including tasters. Lively and friendly.“

“Occupying a period building in Congleton town centre, this Wetherspoon makes great use of the similarly period style interior for what is a comfortable and welcoming place to drink or dine. Ale is of course available on its regular two rows of pumps.“

“This was one of the later pubs that me, Loz, Ferret & Dena visited on our crawl of Congleton, Saturday 8th December 2012. This pub was one of the busiest of the day and had the best atmosphere. As you enter from the street, to your right is a small room and the bar, to your left is a larger oblong room and ahead far right is a small snug with roaring open fire (in winter) it was fair blazing away. The beers on offer included most of the core range along with bottles to included a new? beer called something like Wojtek (probably spelt wrong) There was a nice feel about this pub and you get the impression that this is deservedly popular, it was certainly one of the best of the day. Beer quality was good but one beer that I was given a taster of was not so good though to be fair I think the Bar woman realised this and took it off soon after I tried it. There always seems to be a lot going on at this pub with sessions etc so a real lifeblood pub of the local community I shouldn’t wonder. This pub is a short walk from the town centre across a busy couple of roads.“

“This place was visited twice on our crawl of Congleton Sat 8th December 2012. We arrived a bit early before it opened (keen!) so went and looked in a charity shop whereupon Ferret purchased a camera. We were the back there just after it opened and dived in with Steel City Scholinders Cat (or summat like that) as well as Marble and Blue bee for others amongst us. The beer was in excellent condition, I texted Gazza to tell him how good the Steel City was. The barman & bar-woman were both really enthusiastic and whilst not professing to be beer experts it was clear that they knew there stuff and were more than knowledgeable enough, they were also very nice to chat to. The bottle choice was great with De Molen, Redwillow, Schlernka etc amongst a large range that also included a sizeable selection of Belgian beers. There was a good selection of keg beers with Redwillow, Summer Wine etc amongst. The place had a modern arty European cafe feel to it, not really like a pub though to be fair it had been a toyshop for forty or so years up until three/four years ago when it closed and remained empty until this spring. I thought that it had been well done out, space was well considered, nice combination of small tables, large table along with comfy sofas. In terms of the layout, you entered off of the Lawton Road and as you entered to your right was some table and seating and also to your left with sofa’s and comfy seats far left, the frontage was light and airy with large windows. You headed towards the back and then on your left was the bar area with one further large table behind this and a back entrance/exit. Loz had just one criticism and that was the closed (open fire) at the far left where the comfy chairs were should have been be roaring away. This really is a great place that would go down a storm in a bigger city, why the hell Oxford cannot get anything like this amazes me? I hope it does the same here. Good luck to them.“

“This was another of the pubs that we took in on our Congleton Crawl 8th December 2012 with Ferret & Dena. This pub was situated adjacent to the railway line and station and also sat above and alongside the Macclesfield canal. It is about a 10 minute walk (mostly uphill) from the centre of town and there is a pub opposite on the other side of the tracks across the railway bridge called The Railway which is pleasant enough but caters for a different crowd, three handpumps are available there I had Mobberly. However back to The Queens Head, it is quite a large pub with eating areas situated on a slightly raised area at the back, the public bar(s) seems to be to the left and right of the bar though I never ventured around the right hand side so unsure how large this area was. This pub seems well supported by locals and clearly is a place to meet people off of the trains also. The food is simple, but decently priced and we enjoyed our meals, choice is fairly standard i.e. Lasagne, Chilli-con-Carne, Sausage & Mash, Fish & Chips etc but supplemented by a couple of specials, portion sizes were generous. The beer range ran to eight real ales with Abbeydale and Frodsham represented by three to four offerings as I recall. The beer was well kept and well priced and the service from the friendly landlord was good. I would certainly suggest popping in if in the area.“

“We (me, Loz, Ferret & Dena) visited here Saturday 8th December 2012. We actually walked past this place over the river and up the incline on the other side before realising our error and walking back here. The pub was a simple, just out of the town centre establishment, perhaps slightly tired and a little jaded with just a smattering of locals when we entered at lunchtime. The beer choice concentrated on local breweries with Storm, Front Row and Cheshire Brewhouse, beers were all in very good nick and the service was friendly and prices very good. However my gripe was (and this is my gripe) is that I’m not a fan of loud TV’s in pubs and the Kilmarnock v Celtic game was on, followed by some Sky Sports News and then Horse Racing, I found this rather intruded into the general conversation. I guess this pub would be far more interesting on an evening particularly weekend evening and I don’t doubt that it is well supported by the locals but for me I was expecting more. For those who have an interest in history then the photo’s of Lord Mountbatten around the place should be of interest. I had Front Row Chocolate Stout a beer that started off pretty good but one that I tired of after a short while.“
