“Not to be confused with the Waggon and Horses south of Todmorden, this one is along the Burnley Road a couple of miles to its north in the Cornholme area. The railways line runs directly behind this pub which faces an old mill building. There are a couple of picnic tables out front that separate the building from the main road. Inside it is open plan although there are three defined areas. The first is the bar area that the front entrance leads into. It’s small and has a couple of rows of keg ales and lagers backed up with some bottled beers and lagers including Newcastle Brown Ale. There are mainly bar stools here as the area in front of the serving area is empty except for the carpet. Beyond the bar the best area exists with the carpet and soft furnishings extended and its a comfortable warm environment, although if no-one is sat in this area it can feel a little lonely. To the left of the entrance is the games area, all wooden and includes a large screen television, bigger than the one in the corner of the bar. There’s little other choice in the immediate area but this place is good enough for a visit.“

“On a pretty bend in the road as it heads up towards the west Yorkshire border with Lancashire, it faces hills with a river flowing below the road opposite. The car park for this place is 50 yards down the hill as the front of the building is right on the road, although it does manage to fit in a couple of picnic tables, and a couple to the side of the building as well. Inside it is a three open plan rooms superbly decorated to compliment the fantastic stone walls and floors that have been put to great use to create a superb ambiance. As it is a small stone building the windows don’t allow too much natural light in and this allows it to be lit by candles in places even in the daytime. The bar welcomes you as you walk in and has a couple of real ales on pumps. Plenty come here for the food which I sampled on my second visit. We got the last unreserved table for the night just before 5pm, so you may need to book at the weekends.“

“The second to last pub on the road to Burnley and Lancashire from Todmorden (the Roebuck being the last just around the corner), this is a small pub for a small town-cum-village, although in reality it could be viewed as an extension of Todmorden given the buildings never cease from there to here. The front of the building is very urban town pub in style and the interior decor matches this look, and given the smallness of the place it does give it an unusually cosy appeal. Everything takes place on the ground floor and it’s open plan with the area on the right as you enter the best place for dining and the back area with the bar more suited to session drinking with a horseshoe of wall seating around small stool-like tables all facing the serving area which includes a couple of ale pumps. You’ll probably find Tim Taylor’s landlord in here.“

“Considerable pub building on its own with larage grounds including parking at one-side and a former bowling green and garden on the other as well as a chicken coup. The pub is decorated as a traditional coaching inn and its main room is all open and comfortable with the bar set against the back wall. The adjoining room is set-up for dining and can just about take a coach party, although on my weekday afternoon visit I was the only person here. The owner has plans for the place that centre around getting a former station rebuilt behind the pub to make it a mecca for walkers and get on the rail ale trail, and given the pretty location in the hills that border Lancashire and Yorkshire this certainly would work.“
