62 /100 SPA HOUSE
“Located about a third of the way up England’s longest continuously climbing road and part of the 2014 Tour De France route, this pub hangs a bicycle sign off its traditional sign and is an unofficial cyclists pub for those who like to mix the pedal with the tarmac. There is a list of times of those who have completed the climb in the doorway. Of course it’s open to everyone and caters for locals who live in the houses that infrequently appear amongst the treeline road. The pub serves meals too and it’s easy enough for those in cars to park on the wide road outside. The dining area on the small ground floor is to the left as you walk in and the bar with its seating area is to the right. The bar comes first with the seating around the front window area. There are three real ale pumps with at least one rotating regularly. Cheshire’s Cheshire Gap was the guest on during my first visit.“

68 /100 CHURCH BANK LANE
“Just off the Cragg Road through Cragg Vale, which makes up part of England’s longest continuously climbing road, the pub is situated below the main road in the valley just past the church. It is signposted on both directions so it is hard to miss although you can’t see it as you go around the winding roads of the very pretty valley. The pub itself is in its own stone-brick building that has been extended to include a kitchen area for the food it serves and for why plenty of people come here. There’s a large car park to cater for the people that come here as there are not enough houses in the immediate area to sustain the business. Around the car park are some picnic tables as well as a few outside the front of the building, but the slight disappointment is the views, or the lack of them, which is strange as most points through the valley offer fantastic vistas, but not really at this point. There’s no disappointment inside the pub and its a pretty nicely decorated and a comfortable set-up with a small bar opposite you as you walk through the door that includes a decent selection of craft ales. In front of here is the bar type area in a horseshoe set-up. The other side of the ground floor is given over to the dining area which is just as comfortable but the furniture is more suited to eating than drinking.“
