“One of my top visits in several years. Stopped on a late Friday afternoon. Beautiful location just off the River. Has the main bar and restaurant building, an overflow building next to it with a hole in the common brick wall for access, a downstairs bar and an outdoor patio. All were decorated with memorabilia and rustic and Celtic décor. Downstairs bar features a stuffed albino deer. View of the River from patio. Great ambience. Did not stay for dinner, but tried their flight of beers. I believe the cost was $7 for 6 four ounce pours. All six house beers are made by Valkyrie Brewing, in Dallas, Wisconsin. . Liked most of them especially the Porter and the flagship, Fountain Brew. Meet the owner briefly who was very friendly and accommodating. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.“

“I come to Fountain City every summer and the first thing I do is stop at The Monarch. The bar is beautiful and kept up very well. The beer they serve is also very good, they have their own line of beers and also your typical Irish beer. Food is great with alot of Irish dishes on menu. I would encourage anyone passing through Fountain City to stop at The Monarch and knock back a few!!!“

“1894 original bar, beautiful place. Irish owner, knows how to pour. Cold glass pints. Original recipe from 1860’s for the Fountain Brew line. Lagers, ale and a spring carmel bock, all excellent. Easy to sit here and knock back as many as you can hold.“

“Definitely a cool place to stop in if you’re travelling the Great River Road, even if the beer’s not all that special. The Fountain City beers I think are only available here and hey, that’s another couple of ratings, right? Great old tavern, really quite large with the multiple stories, 2 large rooms on the first level....bright and clean, yet it still has that dusty-rustic feel. I was obviously a tourist, and the place doesn’t get many, but service was still pretty pleasant and the finger foods we had were all right. Probably not worth a trip in its own right, but worth a 1/2 hour stop if you’re on the great road.“

“Home of Fountain City Brews (which are contract brewed variously by Viking and Grey’s), this quaint three story complex is one of the nicer places I’ve stopped at. The basement tavern still has original stone flooring and a fantastic albino buck stuffed in the corner. The main floor has lots of Packer memorabilia on hand. The owner is planning on renovating the complex to do a three level concept with each level housing a different restaurant/bar. The fountain city brews were excellent and the Irish cooking very nice as well. An obscure collection of hand imported Celtic memorabilia and Lord of the Rings lead miniatures as well.“
