“Pub opposite the railway stop on the coastal Lancaster - Carlisle line. A real find, this place. Quite a few ales on, plus some interesting keg. Loads and loads of bottles from Foxfield as well as other national & international breweries. The pub has its own brewery and has a few from smaller breweries as well, so there are plenty of ticks to be had. The atmosphere is convivial. The fire is real (well, this is Cumbria after all), and the menu is extensive but knows its place (i.e. to soak up beer as opposed to present some misguided gastropub experience). Not to be missed if in the area.“

“Am I really the first person to rate this acclaimed spot? OK, the location might have something to do with that, but trust me, it’s worth the journey. Situated directly opposite Foxfield station, the best way to reach it is to travel along the Cumbrian Coast rail line to this remote corner of the county. There you’ll find a slightly shabby, time-worn building complete with rusting Transit vans and mountains of kegs in the yard. Stepping through the door (if you can find it) completes the illusion of travelling back in time. It’s not just the decor, but also the atmosphere and the bonhomie within the room that create this experience. Of course the main draw is the beer, and Foxfield have a reputation not only for quality, but also a willingness to experiment (and they’ve been doing it for a lot longer than it has been fashionable). There’s several Foxfield handpulls with hand-written pump clips on offer, the odd guest cask, and I also noticed some Belgian lines on keg (Ducassis, and I think something by Brasserie Silly). The bottle selection features some of the UK’s leading lights (Kernel, Thornbridge) and many of Foxfield’s own. I didn’t eat but the food looked hearty, English-style fare. The only real downside is the sheer remoteness of the place, but it’s comforting in an odd way to think that these guys have been out there for years, quietly running this great little operation, and will no doubt continue to do so for a long time to come. I’ll definitely return one day.“
