80 /100 Just in Beer (Beer Store) FOLKINGESTRAAT 18 Cool, well stocked beer store with a large selection of local beers, and also generous selection of beers from across Netherlands and elsewhere. My large selection of bottles were carefully wrapped, and the staff (owner?) appeared both helpful and knowledged. |
78 /100 Slijterij Groningen Vismarkt (Beer Store) VISMARKT 36 Good selection of Dutch and international beers. I was there for beers from the provinces Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland, and I left with a good selection. Helpful staff and good prices. |
84 /100 Just in Beer (Beer Store) FOLKINGESTRAAT 18 Interesting beer shop. Local and international beer collection. Not the "everywhere to find" stuff. Friendly staff. Worth while visiting. |
76 /100 Proeflokaal MOUT (Bar) GEDEMPTE ZUIDERDIEP 43 Just Dutch beers on the menu. Also mentioned by the enthousiastic waitress. Interesting variance of beers from all over the country. |
74 /100 NOORDERHAVEN Z.Z. 63 Brewpub and restaurant nicely located at Noorderhaven area not that far from De Koffer. Bit of stylish, tastefully contemporary interior with some industrial/warehouse elements. Visited for beers only but the food menu seems promising as well. The two beers I tried ranged from okay to decent, they seem to like to brew with herbs/spices probably for food pairing purposes. There's a small menu of non-brewpub beers if you want to 'branch out'. Enjoyed my short visit here, will probably revisit to check out some of the other beers. |
70 /100 De Pintelier (Bar) KLEINE KROMME ELLEBOOG 9 Rather busy on a friday evening with lots of students around.
Seems like a more 'general' noisy beer pub with most people unimaginatively drinking fairly standard beers from tap, decent can and bottle selection though with some international craft for those who prefer some variety. Left after one beer, just too crowded. |
76 /100 De Toeter (Bar) TURFSINGEL 6 Classic pub with lots of wood inside and just a bit rundown interior. 17 taps which included Grolsch, but also Moersleutel and plenty of beers from Rockin' Ludina. Solid selection of bottles and plenty of whiskies. Good service. Not a beer geek heaven, but still a good place for Groningen. |
76 /100 Van Erp Dranken (Beer Store) GROTE KROMME ELLEBOOG 16 Spacious liquor store with lots of wood inside. Lots of wines and spirits. Plenty of beers as well, but at least part of the selection didn't seem super fresh. Imported and dutch stuff. Prices are on the high side. |
74 /100 De Pintelier (Bar) KLEINE KROMME ELLEBOOG 9 Short visit on the weekend evening. Very busy and somewhat loud pub which seems to be popular with students and generally younger people. Usual suspects on tap like Jupiler, Schenider, Delirium, Karmeliet. Cans/bottles menu is more interesting with 50-ish cans/bottles. OK for a quick beer. |
74 /100 KOSTERSGANG 32-34 Brewery spreading over three floors. There was no one at the ground floor where all the brewing equipment was. I heard some voices upstairs so went up. There was a big room at the first floor where bunch of people were listening to the elderly gentleman, probably part of the tour. And finally I found a taproom on the second floor. Industrial, but cozy medium sized taproom with piano in one corner. About 10 of their beers in bottles and on tap. Quality was subpar to good. Good service. I liked the place so worth checking out if you're in town. |
70 /100 BOTERDIEP 75 Pretty large place with hipster interior. Looks a bit more like coffee/breakfast place than a beer establishment. Friendly service. About 15 or so de Prael beers available. Different styles, but quality is underwhelming. OK for ticking, but wouldn't go out of my way to visit this one. |
82 /100 NIEUWE BLEKERSTRAAT 1 Small to medium sized place which seems to be very popular with the locals and therefore gets quite cramped or cozy depending on your luck getting the table. Interior is traditional for lowlands pubs. Friendly service, but not always the quickest. 12 beers of taps with just couple of them being really interesting. Extensive bottle list which has plenty of special beers and lambics. Including bottles from Antidoot, Tommie Sjef and Bofkont, even some H.ertie. If you're planning to go for some of the special bottles later on it's a good idea to check if they are in the fridge. The best beer bar in the city, would be even better if draught selection was tad better. |
68 /100 Beer& (Restaurant) RODEWEG 1 Pub on a corner in the city of Groningen, advertising itself as a beer pub but also a place to have something to eat; the menu is rather limited and even if the food itself is decent enough, I guess this kind of limited choice and small portions is more or less what you can expect in the Calvinist north of the Netherlands… The beer list has the same issue: decent enough for what it contains at least for the average beer drinker, but limited in terms of selection, so a seasoned ticker will probably not find this place very useful. Still, they do have a ‘secret’ beer menu, containing things like Boon Oude Geuze and NEIPAs by Dutch craft brewers. I did like the welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff, though, as well as the reasonable pricing; perhaps worth a short stop if you are on your way from De Koffer to Mout, or the other way around, but nothing to get too excited about. |
74 /100 Van Erp Dranken (Beer Store) GROTE KROMME ELLEBOOG 16 Visited on a Thursday afternoon. Nice big old liquor store, doesn't look much from the outside but is big on the inside. Nice selection of beers in old wooden shelve cabinets, a mix of old and new breweries, local and foreign. Prices were as to be expected for the modern beers (high) and reasonable for the classic stuff. Bought some local beers from Bax Bier, Gula Beers and Mommeriete. Friendly owner. |
70 /100 BOTERDIEP 75 Visited on a friday afternoon for a set of flights. Pretty spacious place, brewpub atmosphere, mix of industrial, warehouse and artistic elements. Friendly service, the beers are nothing special but we enjoyed our flights. We opted for 5, but a set of 9 is also available.
Food menu seems quite nice. |
68 /100 The Dog’s Bollocks (Bar) OUDE BOTERINGESTRAAT 17 Large pub which seem to be popular with students. Was absolutely packed during rugby match. They do have around 10 taps, maybe a bit more. Also some craft bottles and cans. Nothing too interesting, Belgian classics, Brewdogs, Flying dog and some Uiltje. Maybe Jopen. These days this is not a must stop for a beer lover by any means. |
80 /100 Slijterij Groningen Vismarkt (Beer Store) VISMARKT 36 Very good store in the town center. Probably several hundred beer both imports and Dutch ones. Very good De Molen and Moersleutel selections. Good choice of US beers - Drekker, Ellison, Central Waters, they even had two bottles of Central Waters Twenty One. Worth checking out. |
82 /100 Just in Beer (Beer Store) FOLKINGESTRAAT 18 Medium sized store in town center. Plenty of space to move around. My first visit was more than a half hour before closing and despite the shop being opened and lit the guy working there told me they were closed. He insisted even after I mentioned opening hours and told me I can buy some beer at Carrefour?? Anyway I wouldn't let go and convinced him to sell me some (probably 50-60 EUR worth) of beer. Asked about buying some glasses since I didn't have any at the hotel and he gave me one as a gift. Next day I went back to share some Fou Founne in return for the glass, had a nice chat with guys working there. They seem knowledgeable and kind, not sure what was the initial reaction about. Anyway there could be round 500 bottles, both imported and Dutch. Some interesting US and UK beers, but also lambics. Prices are OK, some better than others. I'd recommend a visit if you're in town. |
78 /100 Proeflokaal MOUT (Bar) GEDEMPTE ZUIDERDIEP 43 Visited in the evening. The place was packed, but we somehow managed to find a table in the corner. Unfortunately my chair was just next to the radiator and when tried to lower the heating was warned by very nervous waiter not to do that. After 20 more minutes of sweating I asked our server about the heating and she implied I should lower the heating myself. Go figure. Other than that good service, lady who served our table was very kind and knew her beers. Good selection of 10 taps, beer were hit or miss, but the stuff you don't see at other bars. One Moersleutel and one Watergeus. Nice bottle list, about hundred bottles of all Dutch beers. Plenty of different styles, found some interesting ones. Worth visiting. |
82 /100 Proeflokaal MOUT (Bar) GEDEMPTE ZUIDERDIEP 43 Next to De Koffer, the other important beer pub in the town of Groningen in the northernmost Netherlands, also incorporating a little shop. Quite spacious with a large table in the centre, this place almost breathes a kind of French style ‘grand café’ atmosphere, with a clean yet pleasant interior. Very quick and helpful service, also from the lady running the place. Both the tap list and bottle list include only Dutch beers (at least I haven’t seen anything non-Dutch during my visit), much like Amsterdam’s Arendsnest, but considering the enormously rapid and exponential development of Dutch craft beer in general, this is not a problem for me – ticks guaranteed. Well-presented in a house tasting glass, I could have spent hours enjoying beers here. Didn’t buy anything from the shop, but it did seem to have an eclectic selection of Oedipus, Kromme Haring, Uiltje and so on – the top of Dutch craft beer at the moment. ‘Groninger’ Toon Van den Broek also delivers his spontaneous fermentation experiments here, so for that reason alone, this place is definitely worth a visit - or, better put, a must stop when in Groningen for beer. |
88 /100 NIEUWE BLEKERSTRAAT 1 One of the two major beer venues in the dynamic university city of Groningen these days, the other being Mout. Visited after the first Wild festival last Saturday, for which they apparently made an extra effort in presenting a very extensive vintage bottle list, including many lambics from all the major producers as well as modern sours from different beer countries. The regular list was equally satisfying, with many Dutch, Belgian, British and American beers arranged neatly – and quite correctly – per beer style; an impressive amount of beers from tap as well. The beer choice just ever ends here, and is renewed weekly apparently. A ticker’s paradise, in a friendly and relaxed, even cosy ‘brown café’ atmosphere including the obligatory ‘beer paraphernalia’ decorating the place (old tin billboards and so on); very helpful and efficient service as well. I was expecting much less than this – this place alone makes me want to return to Groningen instantly. |
56 /100 De Pintelier (Bar) KLEINE KROMME ELLEBOOG 9 Not sure why this place is quite recommended, it was nothing special. |
54 /100 KOSTERSGANG 32-34 Not a bad place just a shame the service was really slow. |
64 /100 De Pintelier (Bar) KLEINE KROMME ELLEBOOG 9 Mainly belgian beers, a few dutch. Usually pretty crowded as it's the heart of the city. Lots of students as well. Not my cup of beer. |
80 /100 Van Erp Dranken (Beer Store) GROTE KROMME ELLEBOOG 16 Visited August 2019. Hadn't been here in years. The place used to have just loads of dutch and belgian beers with some well known UK/US stuff (Brewdog, Anchor, Flying Dog). So i was quite suprised to see that (besides the still loads of dutch and belgian beers) they currently had some lesser known US brews in from Lickinghole Creek and Novo Brazil but also Whiplash (ire) North (uk) and Page 24 (fra). Recommended for the not so generic non belgian/dutch collection. |
66 /100 Het Concerthuis (Bar) POELESTRAAT 30 Downright in the middle of the city centre. Very hipster, big place, nice seating, pretty good food. Serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at reasonable prices. There's a rotating taplist and two bottle list. One is listed as the secret stash (which is not so secret). That's the one you want to pick a beer from. The selection is not superhuge but they manage to get some beers on there which i didn't see at the actual craftbeer places.
Beware though, and this is quite annoying, not everything on the menu is in stock. This happened pretty much everytime i was there. The staff is usually not up to date on their own menu and seem generally not very interested in their job, which makes ordering something a bit of a drag.
However, if you don't mind the latter part this is a nice place to sit with some pretty decent beers.

84 /100 Just in Beer (Beer Store) FOLKINGESTRAAT 18 Favorite local bottle shop. Selection changes rapidly and stock is usually quite limited. Lots of canned IPA's, sours and stouts. Friendly and helpful staff. Must go if you're around. |
80 /100 Proeflokaal MOUT (Bar) GEDEMPTE ZUIDERDIEP 43 Nice place right in the city centre. Serves dutch beers only. Still manages to keep a changing list of 100+ or so. Also contains a small shop for rare barrel aged beers. The latter used to be closed during the evening but that might have changed recently. Nice seating and the staff knows what's they're serving. Recommended. |
96 /100 NIEUWE BLEKERSTRAAT 1 As a local i'm very happy with this place. The must go if you're in Groningen. Small and a bit outside the centre. Easy walk though. Massive bottle (and can) selection and rotating taplist. A lot of Dutch and Belgian beers but also a list with new beers from all over each month. Friendly staff which knows what they're serving. Best place! |
80 /100 The Dog’s Bollocks (Bar) OUDE BOTERINGESTRAAT 17 they have plenty of bottles and also several taps to cover wide ranges of needs from Jupiler through Franziskaner Hefe Weisse and Brewdog punk ipa to Goose ipa and La Chouffe....my only problem is that if you order something less usual like Flying Dog Gonzo or other stuff, they seem to be not even aware of the fact that they have that beer....anyway,it's in the end a great place - especially if you just simply use the beer menu not requesting their help to choose |
94 /100 NIEUWE BLEKERSTRAAT 1 Great place with incredibly wide selection of beers |
80 /100 Proeflokaal MOUT (Bar) GEDEMPTE ZUIDERDIEP 43 A great beer cafe for craft beer lovers. Wide range of beers from tap and bottle. All the beers are from Dutch brewerys. The prices are very reasonable. Friendly staff. Modern ambience. Easy contact with other beer lovers. |
62 /100 De Roemer Groningen (Beer Store) ASTRAAT 13 Visited November 2018. Small but interesting beer selection, specially interesting for a couple of lambics and beer from countries like Latvia or Iceland. Next one please! |
72 /100 Van Erp Dranken (Beer Store) GROTE KROMME ELLEBOOG 16 Visited November 2018. Lot of shelves in a big bottle shop. Load of dutch and belgian beer. Fresh IPAS and good allocation. Some glassware too. Really worths a visit. Next one please! |
68 /100 Slijterij Groningen Vismarkt (Beer Store) VISMARKT 36 Visited November 2018. Huge shop with whisky, wine, spirits...and beer. Beer corner is around 40% of the shop. Good dutch selection including many styles and brewers. Some international choices too (mainly Belgian). Loud techno music on my visit. Next one please! |
74 /100 De Toeter (Bar) TURFSINGEL 6 Visited November 2018. Lot of ambiance on a Thursday night, full booked. About the beer, tap list is a mix of their own brand (Rockin Ludina) and some usual suspects (Meantime, Guiness, Kasteel...). Value is just OK. Next one please! |
76 /100 Just in Beer (Beer Store) FOLKINGESTRAAT 18 Visited November 2018. A nice and modern bottle shop located in the city centre. Awesome local selection plus an interesting european mix plus some international gems. Interesting T-shirts. Good value. Best selection in town in my opinion. Next one please! |
