72 /100 33 MARKET PLACE
“We (me, Loz, Dada & Pauline) visited here Tuesday 2nd April 2024. Another new'ish' micropub that opened Summer2023, appears to have taken over the premises of an old shop and is slap bang in the centre of town in the market place which is currently close to being finished following a big revamp. The interior is simple, modern, plenty of wood, quite airy and light. It is a single roomed place, I forgot to check how many pumps there were as I wasn't expecting to have to add it to the database, but there was a reasonable choice as I recall. I liked it here but a few young kids, on Easter holidays, were a little bit too loud and giddy, not a real problem at all, I think they might be the owners teenage kids, probably just bored.“

“We (me, Loz, Dada & Pauline) visited here Tuesday 2nd April 2024. I note this underwent a name change in 2023 following a change of owners. We visited three micropubs today in Heanor, there are five all within spitting distance we've been to all of them now. I think that this was our favourite this evening, though I recall the Redemption and Angry Bee also being very good on an earlier visit back in 2017. We really liked it here, super friendly, great beer, very nice landlord, we stayed for a couple. The Ashover beer I had was magnificent and one of the best beers on this entire trip, though the Jaipur was also very good. The two couples that we were sat by at the front seating area were very funny, if I lived here I would be in here frequently.“

“There are so many micropubs in Heanor and the surrounding area, it would be possible to spend and entire day and not get to them all. If this is the case may I humbly recommend the Crooked Cask as a top destination in town. There are five cask beers (from the likes of Milestone and Brass Castle) as well as one craft keg (a Castle Rock NEIPA today). Many different styles as well, including a mild and an Irish stout. And the layout is conducive to large crowds without getting silly crowded, which is nice. My favourite place in Heanor so far. Please note that hours may change at short notice so best to check their website before heading out.“

Angry Bee (Bar)
1 GODFREY STREET
“Now this is a micropub: a room with a few partitions but hardly any space to move on a Friday afternoon. That's fine, I can make my way through to the bar which offers a good handful of cask ales, including two from very local brewery Leadmill. Like many pubs in the area the beer tends toward the sessionable but goes up to 5.9%. The beer is as good as the value (well below £4 per pint for the strongest beer). Recommended, of course. You might get bags of ticks and tasty ones at that!“

“The Redemption is tucked just off the main drag in Heanor on a side street. It's a proper micropub - small without being tiny although there's loads more room upstairs - and very comfortably full at 4 on a Friday. They've got 7 cask beers from local microbreweries as well as those farther afield such as North Riding. I tried the local brewery Leadmill and was impressed. The keg isn't up to much but they do have unchilled bottles and cans to take away from the likes of Abbeydale and Wilde Child. A recommended stop in town.“

Crown Inn (Bar)
6 CHURCH STREET
“The Crown is a lovely large and popular pub. Open plan with a U-shaped bar in front of you as you come in. Everyone seems to know each other but its far from cliquey. The beer choice is worth checking out, as the 5 cask ales all come from microbreweries (Blue Monkey, Bradfield, Stancill and Whim). Not much in the way of cans or bottles but this is 'real ale' country! Certainly a good place to stop for one or more.“

“The Redemption Ale House was stop number 5 on our Derbyshire public transport excursion by bus. Our trip today cost only £10 for me and Loz with a joint Zig Zag ticket. We were taking in micro bars in Langley Mill, Ilkeston and Heanor and a couple of pubs in Ripley at the end of the evening. We (me, Loz Dad and Pauline) visited on Saturday 22nd April 2017. The Redemption Ale House is but a few minutes stroll from the Angry Bee, head back through to the Market Place, the main road that runs parallel with this is Market Street turn left (Ripley direction) turn left again onto Ray Street and you will find it on the left hand side.

The Redemption is an attractive looking place from the outside, double fronted with the logo on one of the windows and a dark slate grey colour (perhaps?) . It is square shaped inside, with the bar on the back wall and stairs towards the rear on the left hand side. Floor tiles rather than carpet (hurrah) seem to cover much of the floor. In fact it has been very tastefully furnished and decorated inside, it looks very nice. Loz showed me a photo of the wallpaper in the women’s toilets which was William Morris I believe and was Pink Flamingoes it looked great, there was more posh wallpaper in the additional seating area upstairs. The toilets are upstairs not sure if there were any toilets on this level for less able folk. The beers were in a chilled glass fronted stillage area behind the bar.

It was pretty busy in here with a good mixture of ages. There were even more CAMRA folk in here that my dad appeared to know, he is worse than me for chatting to anyone and everyone. The beer choice was good with about six cask, I honestly cannot remember if there were any keg as I just stuck to the cask offerings with the Bakers Dozen Straight outta Ketton being particularly impressive, I had two of these. The staff were very good, it was a mother and son serving. I really liked this place though I cannot understand how it can be a Micro Bar as size wise it appears to be quite a good sized establishment, but regardless with both this and the Angry Bee around the corner you have the start of a very good pub crawl in Heanor. “

Angry Bee (Bar)
1 GODFREY STREET
“The Angry Bee was stop number 4 on our Derbyshire public transport excursion by bus. The Angry Bee is located on Godfrey Street which is just to the side and behind the market place. Of all of the places today this one probably fits the criteria for Micro Bar best. It is a simple but modern looking glass fronted establishment with a couple of tables and chairs outside.

Inside its a smallish room with the bar ahead on the back wall just offset to the left as I think that you can go beyond to the right to another room and toilets (didn’t go there so partially guessing). The beer options were more traditional and very much locally sourced so Leadmill and Bottle Brook featured on tap. Despite only having a few tables in here, it was busy with lots of chat to and fro between folk, my sad seemed to know most of them as they were all local CAMRA branch folk or just people he knew from pubs and Pauline visit. I liked this place, it was friendly, beer in very good nick and it was a conversation pub.
