“Having heard rumors that there is another bar in Hvar offering locally made beers we visited the place. BackLane is a cute place, with a nice patio, on a back lane (heh), parallel to Hvar's harbor. Good music, a relaxed atmosphere, really can't find a fault there... Looking at the price list, there they were a "craft" lager, IPA and pale ale, all at hefty 38hrk/0.5l (Hvar prices...), all claiming they are made on the island. The descriptions an the ABV/IBUs for the lager and the IPA matched largely The Garden Brewery's Pils and IPA, and there are indeed The Garden Brewery cans available, including specials and seasonals (!!!), so we were a bit suspicious, so I went for the Pale Ale, not before we double-checked with the, nice, professional waiter if the beers were indeed local. Yes, he claimed, they are locally made, and nope, they only have the Lager and the IPA... sigh. Okay, we got those.... The lager was quite clear for a starting micro lager, and a sniff confirmed one thing - that it's definitely not Garden's Pils... and the sip confirmed anotehr thing - that it was definitely a shitty industrial macro lager. I was duped. Tricked, cheated into paying 38 HRK for 0.5l of fucking Ožujsko - as that's what it seems to be, and I saw an Ožujsko keg peeking from the inside at one point. Fucking. Hell. So, after running out of their lager, they just sell Ožujsko, the most widely available macro in the country, as "locally made craft lager". Wonderful. The IPA, which is okay, allegedly isn't theirs either, at any point (but not The Garden's either). It might have been theers, but I'm not about to make wild guesses after the most expensive Ožujsko of my life. The Pale Ale is allegedly always theirs, when they have it. And they didn't have it at that point, and who knows if they will. Go get some The Garden ticks from cans if you're not visiting any bigger cities. Go here for coffee or cocktails. It will be a good visit, it's a very good place when they aren't lying through their teeth and if they had what they claimed to have, it would be scoring pretty high, another craft beer gem on this island after Vunetovo. But they are and DO NOT take any chances with their lager unless they can show you physically that it indeed isn't some macro shit.“

“A couple of years ago, Anna & Joško moved their business closer to the general public basically, opening a truly beautiful little Mediterranean beer garden a child's stone's throw from the sea. Surrounded a pine forest and an orchestra of cicadas, it has a lovely "hand-made" feeling in general. While no bottles are available to go anymore (though you can get beer to go), there are four taps. At this point, because the season was what it was, other than limiting their working hours, Anna brewed "only" her APA, which is flawless and by the book, excellent really. The rest was Zmajska (Pils, Therapy Session IPA, Red Ale IIRC at the moment). Hopefully, next year will bring a better season - and more beers again! Other than beer, they offer traditional food and snacks (the former when available) - excellent from what I've heard. Hvar prices, but unlike most other bars there when it comes to beer, you get what you pay for, and you can do much worse. It was great to chat beer with them of course too. There is NO excuse not to visit it when you're in Hvar, be it the town or, if you're mobile, the island, as this is an excellent, unique place! How to get here: Just follow the path by the sea to the west from the Hvar centre, pass by Amphora and in a minute or two you're there.“
