“Friendly, cheap-ish spot in a great location in Kobe. 3 taps, usually 2 are imports for around a thousand yen a pint. Bottles also available in the fridge. Nothing super rare but nice prices. They offer hot dogs and pizza for a nice price too. A welcome addition to the lacking Kobe beer scene.“

“Finally made it out here... Kobe Minato Beer 6PM-12AM (Last Order 11PM) A 1 minute walk from exit 1 of Shinkaichi Station. Small place with 3 taps (a brown ale, golden ale and an Apple Coffee Liqueur when I went). There are 3 tables and 4 seats at the bar so it’ll seat 16 people roughly. The interior is mostly wood giving it a pub feel. Prices were 550/800/1350 yen for 250/400/700ml respectively. The brewpub set up is behind the bar and considering the whole building is less than 50m2 they’re definitely nano. I spoke with the owner who said they make roughly 150L/batch. The high ceilings make the place feel roomy though when busy this joint must be wild. The beer was much better than when I last had this brewery. I’d say they’re a bit above those Beer Kobo places in Tokyo. They’ll be at Nakanoshima Fest in Osaka later this year (not Craft Beer Picnic a different fest) if you want to give them a go. Friendly staff and customers (2 guys were there when I came in) and the owner gave me some viscous fruity sake from Gifu. I don’t think the staff speak much English but we had a nice chat in Japanese. “

“This place is something of an enigma. They serve up what was by far the best of the sake we had on our Nada tour, yet they were nearly empty. They are located in a modern building that is far less attractive than the others, which is almost certainly the reason. This place is great, though. There is a short walk-through tour that is something like a museum and while worth doing isn't all that fascinating. After that there was a free tasting of about nine or ten sakes and liqueurs which was very generous and fun although taking notes was nearly impossible so I resisted. There is also a standing bar for paid tastings, where we spent about an hour trying their best stuff. Quality is very high, probably the best in Nada. Prices ranged from ¥600 for 3 daijingo to ¥800 for their top of the line daigin, all served in wine glasses. Some sakes are only available here. There are some funky and interesting snacks to go with them as well. The only thing I could ask for is a chair, because I wanted to drink here all day. Friendly staff were great but we speak Japanese. I think someone there must be able to manage in English too. A must visit and probably better than any of the craft beer bars in Kobe!“

“This was the prettiest kura of the four we visited. It isn't an old building, but is built to look like an Edo-period kura and has a lovely garden out front. Quite popular with the tourists. There are two tours of the brewery available each afternoon but we focused on drinking. We got 3 small pours on the tasting, which was relaxed and not very informative but you could taste at your own pace and easily rate. Kind of thought they could have given us a couple more, though. This is a huge industrial brewery. Sake was pretty good but not hugely distinctive. Lovely place, though, and will definitely go back and take the tour one day.“

“Hakutsuru is the biggest sake maker in Japan and their sake tastes that way. It is not craft stuff. That said, this place is a museum and has the best displays of any of the four kura we visited. It is pretty cool--set in a building that looks like an Edo-period kura, with manikins making sake, that kind of thing. Interesting and very cool to see the old time equipment. As a museum, it is the best of its kind I have seen. For tasting, not really good at all. There were two sakes and three fruit liqueurs to taste for free, all mediocre. No paid tastings either, which was fine with me as I wanted to drink better stuff anyhow. There is a store where you can buy the sake. Seems pretty popular with domestic and foreign tourists.“

“The last of four kura that we visited on our walking tour. It is possible to tour the sake brewery, but you must make reservations before hand. We didn't. The tasting room is a rather modern affair. We were offered about 6 sakes in the free tasting. It was fast, not much discussion, and we were given just a tiny bit of each which wasn't really possible to rate. There were many other bottles to the back, but they weren't offered, which was a bit strange, but we couldn't complain. The nice thing here was the bar, WITH SEATS, where you could purchase sake to drink. It was quite relaxing and nice and although we had to call someone over when we wanted to order, they were friendly and didn't mind us hanging out for a couple hours. Their Fukuju sake line is pretty decent, probably the second best of the day: not quite on the small-batch, hand-made level, but almost, and certainly not huge-level industrial. Some of the nama sakes are only available here. Prices were ¥500 for 3 45ml tasters, or generally ¥400 for a 90ml cup. There is a pretty high-end restaurant on the premises as well, but we got here a little too late for lunch--ends at 14:30. Definitely worth a visit.“

“Stumbled across this little place for the first time last night. Very central location, just off the main street, a couple hundred meters from Sannomiya station. Counter seating for maybe 8, plus a couple couches and tables. Talked to the friendly Canadian co-owner Kevin and he said they just had their 4th anniversary. They had Baird, Caldera and Rogue on tap, plus a wide range of mainly American craft in bottles. US pints 900-1100, bottles from 900- (rarer stuff like Prairie was 2500). Nice place, although they also have hookas which means it probably gets smokey. I’d score it higher if they made it a non-smoking place.“

“Interesting place. Seems like they are into funky music and dirty drawings judging by the tunes being played and the art on the walls. ¥300 cover charge for which you get peanuts. 5 or 6 taps of their own beer and (I guess) a friend’s brewery from Okayama. Beer is not the most exciting, but preferred it to most of the Rokko stuff. Order at the counter but pay at the end. Small size available so you can tick them all off quite easily.“

“Fairly large selection consisting of mainly Rokko and their own brewpub Starboard beers and some weird guests, mainly from Belgium. Quite popular and with nice food and accommodating staff. Beer is maybe not so exciting, but this is Kobe, a beer desert so make do with what you can get I suppose. My score seems a touch high compared to other places in Japan I’ve given similar scores to, but in Kobe, this is one of the better places I guess.“

“Very small brewpub in a little prefab building which sits around the corner from Exit 1 of Shinkaichi Station on the Kobe Kosoku Line. Friendly woman serving, and light jazz of the sound system. Bar seats for six people and tables for a crowded 12 or so. It was empty on a hot Friday afternoon in early August. Four taps, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) only one Minato beer was available. Three tanks were full of three styles of beer in the making, but these were not yet on tap. The other beers were from Ise Kadoya, Swan Lake, and Sapporo. Prices seemed a bit high: small for ¥550-650, medium for ¥800-850, and large for ¥1,350-1,400. The one Minato beer we had was clearly a work in progress.“

“1 minute walk from exit 1 of Shinkaichi station. Rather new place and they do not really have their system up and working at full steam yet. Tiny pre-fab building. Could sit 12 at most. 4 beers on tap included 1 house beer that was pretty decent, 2 other Japanese craft, and Sapporo. Was disappointed to only get to try one of their own beers. Lady at the bar was very friendly but didn’t know much about the beers. Must review again once they are serving more of their own beers.“

“This is a supermarket but the selection of beers is very good- a lot of local beers- prices are cheaper than the bars- and as its a supermarket there is great pre-cooked food and snacks to take away with you. If you are a tourist it is also tax free! As drinking in parks is OK its a great place to bag up some beer, take advantage of the free ice in the B1 floor- and away you go. A 100yen shop in B1 also sells cooler type bags that can keep your selection chilled.“

“NOTE: Ignore Ratebeer Map. This is a small, new place just 50m N of Kobe station. I found it recently via Groupon ad they had a couple months back. The owner cares about craft beer, shochu, whiskey and sake and had at least a dozen of each. Only three taps, and the only true"craft" that day was Sankt Gallen’s Pineapple (Yebisu and Edelpils were the other two), but there were about 15 bottles of J craft (prices not bad, 500-900/bottle), many well-known like Baird, Minoh & Hitachino and some a bit less common. Food was quite good. The day I was there a bunch of middle-aged ladies were there at 5pm, expiring Groupons in hand, but I imagine the crowd will vary at other times.“

“Update 2019: stopped in hoping the beers had improved, but the two I tried still had that odd sourness I get from Kibidote in Okayama. All are 4.5% or 5%, another Kibidote influence. At ¥1080 for 500ml it is far from a bargain, though admittedly Kobe has few options. It was slow at 7pm, but by 8pm was getting busy. Food is good, but a bit pricey, 5 pieces of fried Camembert for ¥700. They had a server taking orders this time. Review in 2016: Stopped in and had a few of their brews. Tried to talk to the brewer/bartender, but they use an ’order-at-the-counter’ so he was busy and it was tough to maintain a conversation. Beers were fair, some variety but nothing really stood out though. Nice decor and the food looked good.“

“Nice to see another legit brewpub in Kobe. They had 4 taps, two of their own beer. Amber was so-so, but Amarillo Golden was nice and hoppy. Jazz BGM, friendly woman serving small dishes of tasty food. Owner seemed a bit cool despite our attempts to engage him. At the time prices were 430/250ml, 700/330ml, 900/500ml. Seems they have gone up since then.“

SHIMOYAMATEDORI 3-CHOME 15 − 10, CHUO-KU
“The main focus of this shop is sake (over 100), followed by wine and whiskey. The standing bar in the back lets you do tastings of whiskey and sake. Whiskey tastings are a pretty good deal, 30ml from 250-1500 (high end is 18yr Macallan). They changed their business model in Dec 2016 though, and you can’t just buy anything and drink it in the back. Beerwise it isn’t fantastic, but they have had Baird, Baeren and Sankt Gallen at times (450-550), perhaps the only place in Kobe to get them. Also the Mexican Day of the Dead range (318), Hitachino (410). I also saw a flyer they had for a sake event for 3,000, unfortunately sold out (150 seats booked).“

“Popped in to take a quick look. Cosy place with tasty looking food. Size L is close to a UK pint, according to the friendly barman. Rokko lineup including a beer brewed just for HopStand. Also Guiness. A customer was smoking at the bar, so if you are sensitive this may not be the place for you given its size.“

Daiei Kobe Sannomiya (Grocery Store)
CHŪŌ-KU KUMOIDŌRI 6-1-15
“Kobe has hardly any beer specialty stores, but with Aeon taking over Daiei, the beer selection improved for a while, but then was reduced. This shop is on the east side of the street across from the Mint building, very close to Sannomiya station. Their beer selection is on the first floor, behind the wine bar. There is also a decent selection of typically expensive cheese, salami etc.“

“Starboard is actually a super-nano brewpub that offers an ever-changing lineup of innovative house beers, as well as three or four good imports and a Rokko Beer selection. Their monthly beer day is when prices for most beers are just 350 for what they call a US Pint. In truth they aim to serve 350mls in a US pint glass, so be forewarned. Regular prices for Rokko beers are 700/350mls, but some of the American imports are 1100/350mls, making them rather steep. Food is pretty tasty. The patio area is an attractive place to hang out except in winter. Close to Sannomiya station.“

“This Yamaya has the best selection I have seen west of Osaka. A large liquor shop, it has a fair range of imports such as Germans, Belgians, UK and the odd American. They have some attractive deals where you buy 2 or 3 bottles the same price and get 20-30% off. Not really accessible without a car though.“

“In Kobe there are a limited (but growing) number of places to find bottled craft beer. Seiyu (owned by WalMart) has about a dozen imports and a dozen Japanese craft beers such as Eichigo, Otaru and Ya-ho. Some of the imports from Greene King (UK) and Belhaven (Scotland) are good deals at just 245yen plus tax. Seiyu also has an online store.“

“Small place. Mimimalist decor: plywood siding and concrete, very dim lighting. Good R&B on the sound system, and around 500 CDs in wall shelves (with a "Do Not Touch" warning sign). Table space for 18 people, and for four at the bar. Six taps: only two of their own beers, neither very well made, and four from Kibidote, which were just a tiny bit better. Staff were quick, efficient, and rather cool (not unfriendly, exactly, but fairly unconcerned and inattentive). Might be worth checking out again in several months, to see if they have improved their brewing skills.“

“Pleasant small bar/restaurant in a busy part of Sannomiya. 16 taps, but not all operating the night I was there, on a complicated gauge-filled wall system (someone mentioned "steampunk"-looking). Eight were Rokko brews, two StarBoard, and five others (including a some imports). Variable pricing depending upon the beer, Taster set of six for Y1,200, but unfortunately these beers are set, and one cannot pick and choose. Tables for around 20 people, and bar seating for six. Friendly atmosphere and quick service. The main server knew his stuff, too. Beer range from okay to fairly good.“

“Nice comfy little place with good smelling food but beer that has a long way to go. Of the two house beers, the White Ale was on its way to niceness, the PA still far from it. The 4 Kibidote beers on tap were in general off. They’ve just started, so I hope they dial the brewing in.“

“Nice little place near Sannomiya Hankyu and Subway stations. Tap list is really not very impressive. They had a Brewfist on the guest tap, though, and Punk IPA, besides majors. Probably worth a look to see what is on the guest, but otherwise, not a major craft beer place.“

“The new place moved closer to Sannomiya Station, so it is a bit more convenient to most trains. Friendly vibe. Staff was friendly and helpful. Pretty long list of beers, though several were out when we went on a Saturday evening. House beers and Rokko beers are the majority, all decent though rarely mind-blowing. Prices are reasonable but the glasses are smaller than we expected ("pint" glass was surely not a pint). Food looked good. Probably still the best place I know in Sannomiya area.“

“Heard about this place from a friend, it has a ton of wine - including a small standing bar area that seems to focus on wine, possibly sake as well but I am guessing they’d let you enjoy your beer there as well. Friendly staff. 40 or so bottles in a display fridge across from the register. These are pretty much 90% domestic with Coedo, Baird, Hakkaisan (rarely seen elsewhere), Hitachino. Not such an amazing selection but the best you’ll find in Kobe.“

“A short walk to the Northeast of Sannomiya Station is In tha Door Brewing. Located in a ghetto looking shopping arcade, among all the shuttered shops there was a place with 500 yen haircuts, is this beautiful brewpub that could fit in like a charm in a fancy area like Omotesando. The concrete and wood interior gives it an industrial look and the miss-matched tables made me feel I was in a cool companies loading dock. Turntables at the bar, a wall of CDs and Snoop Dogg coming out of the speakers tells me they take music seriously here. A fairly spacious brewpub with high ceilings and I enjoy looking in on the brewhouse behind the bar. Prices were reasonable: tiny tasters 300~350¥, M 500~550¥, L 850~900¥ and pitchers (!) 2800-3100¥. Other than the house brews the rest are from Okayama’s Kibidote brewing. They started brewing in the August and had their Ninomiya Funk Ale on when I went, unfortunately their Shiroinon White Ale was sold out. Selection here has just 2 breweries but Kibidote is rarely seen in Kansai and the house beers can’t be had elsewhere. Unfortunately, neither are very good as they have production issues. Hopefully, with experience In tha Door’s beers will improve.“

“Rokko Beer Diner used to overlook Motomachi but had to move and now find themselves midway towards Sannomiya Station. Going up the stairs of the posh-looking building you are greeted by outdoor tables in a courtyard area out front - a nice surprise. Brewpub Starboard’s new location is a wee bit smaller than their old Motomachi place but keeps the same welcoming atmosphere. Inside is cozier than the old location but 4 high tables, 6 low and 2 with benches provide a variety of seating options. Glasses are 480¥, US pints 700-900¥ and a large is an extra 500¥. Tasting sets of 6 Rokko beers are good value at 1200¥. The 20 taps had only 16 on when I went, mostly Rokko beers with 2 Starboard beers brewed onsite in the backroom. A cool place with friendly staff, it seemed much quieter than their old location but I liked it.“

“Around the corner from Starboard is Hop Stand Yakitori & Craft Beer. They serve Yakitori skewers at 180¥ a pop (minimum order of 2) and serve Rokko beers, including the triple hopped Kitanagasa Ale. The Yakitori were piping hot, tender and delicious. My favorite part of this place is the beautiful look: an old house has been fixed up into an inviting trendy bar with two bar stools at an outdoor window, 12 seats at the narrow bar and 3 tables along the wall. Small but bright and fun. The 8 taps had 5 craft and 3 macros with prices: S 480¥, M 680¥, L 920¥, XL 1900¥. Tasting sets of 4 Rokko Beers could be had for 1400¥, watch out though as the prices don’t include tax. It’s a cute casual place for a quick drink or leisurely date, 2 skewers and a small beer cost me 900¥. Next time I’ll pop in with my wife. They mostly lose points on selection.“

“Another place that has me scratching my head over it’s listing on RB. I guess there isn’t much in the area. “Located in/near stations all over the place in Kansai this is little more than a convenience store/overpriced import shop. The selection varies from place to place and all beers are sold cold for immediate consumption. Prices are on the high side for that reason and selection is macro-type imports, low quality German beers, a few belgians and a few J-craft. “This Belgian beer place is very convenient as it is literally under the tracks next to Hankyu Sannomiya station. it has been around for ages and is worth a mention. It has a limited number of taps, usually with Leffe and Hoegarten and perhaps another mainstream beer. The bottled selection is quite good and all beer is in proper glassware. Prices for bottled offerings are not cheap (the usual 1100-1500), but drafts are around 700-800/glass and you can save 100yen per glass if you stand rather than sit. “When I went the 2F cafe had no Akashi beers and the 1st floor cafe had 2 beers with omiyage Kobe Port Tower labels: a dark and a regular beer(most likely pilsner & schwarz). The best thing to do would be on a sunny day go to the Meriken Cafe/gift shop at the base of the tower. Buy a beer & drink it on the little roofed patio by the vending machines. “Lunch is a great deal here, 800-850 yen for decent sized portions. I got the daily set which included fish, chicken, sausages, cabbage & potato salad, soup + rice. My wife got the Japanese lunch featuring katsudon, curry noodle & pickled side dishes both were 800 yen each. The food was average in taste though. Great atmosphere, dark wood everywhere in a massive multistory building with us seated in the 3F(non-smoking). Staff were mostly young women in bar wench uniforms, friendly but not knowledgeable though she had a notebook she referred to to answer my beer related queries. The house beer Taishikan Draft Beer was quite good but the weizen was bad. All in all a nice enough place to pass for lunch in Kobe or with a large group, they have seating for 430 people!“

“A small place with just 6 taps. Four are typical Irish pub offerings for about 700-900/pt: Guinness, Kilkenny, Yebisu, Heineken. The other two guest taps have some kind of decent craft for 900-1100/pt. Bell’s White and Punk IPA were on when we were there, but they change regularly. The sign said "No Food, only Popcorn", but I guess they do have food sometimes. They also have a lot of cocktails for around 600.“
