“Taproot Brewing is an underrated brewery with a great young brewer, Kevin Beachem. He has more production experience and produces a wider range of beer styles than most brewer's in Rhode Island. It is part of Newport Vineyards which is a vanity business for an old money local family. The wine is so subpar, sandy island soil just isn't good for growing wine. They have dumped millions into this enterprise driving out the local farmers market and several beloved businesses. They don't seem to care about the beer. And the brewer they found in New Jersey. The beer is what is holding the place together. IPA are varied and abundant. The squash beer is excellent. Beautiful grounds. “

“Solid spot in Newport area. Open space with a patio right on the lake and near Easton's Beach. I "went for a run" while my wife and kids played on the beach and crushed some quick ticks. About 8 taps and chill people. Beer is pretty solid.“

“I stopped in here last week for lunch on my way to Homebrewcon. On the main road in Middleton half way to Newport. Huge building feels like a rest area, in fact there is an information booth as you walk through the main doors. Huge gift shop to the right brewhouse in plain sight off to the left and a good sized taproom and outside seating on the lawn. Did I mention its a huge place? Farm to table food I had a burger that was a little underdone and quite messy. Call me picky but when your patty is thick and the bun is much larger than the meat it bugs me. Flatten the meat a bit so that after the condiments are on the thing I can get my mouth around it. The beer was average to good and the service was attentive. I'd stop in again if in the area but wouldn't make a special trip for the beer. Tourist - farm to table pricing be prepared. A flight a burger and a 4 pack to go were $45“

“Stopped in for lunch, decent sized building. Sat in the bar area, regular restaurant seating was plentiful. Plenty of seats at the bar, sat at a high top. Ordered a flight, all were just decent, nothing exceptional. Our waitress knew the food menu, but not much help with the beer. Ok place to try.“

“A funny little place in a weird part of town. The menu is pretty comprehensive for food which was of an OK quality. We appreciated the well priced kids menu too. The beer selection was limited to 7 of their own brews with nothing too out there. It had the look and feel of an old world pub with an American size to it. Service was meh. There isn’t an awful lot in the area when it comes to brewpubs, especially in this weird part of town. Take it or leave it though.“

“Visited shortly after they opened on a Saturday. They weren’t very busy. Large dedicated parking lot, probably larger than they would ever need. The place has the feel of a worn in brewpub that’s been around for a long time and is stuck in the past. The beer they had available was all their own. The beer itself was okay, nothing special, and most of them were just lackluster. One of them I couldn’t finish my sample pour. My wife and I split an order of onion rings. Those were the highlight of the visit. The bartender was pretty cool too. Very friendly older gentleman. He recommended the onion rings as an "onion ring connoisseur". He wasn’t wrong. The biggest strike against this place is how much the flight of 7 cost. $17. I could understand a bit more if the beer was actually good, or mostly high gravity, but neither of those were applicable. Onion rings were reasonably priced. If I were in RI again, I would definitely skip this place. There are plenty of better breweries in the state, plus one just down the street from this one.“

“DefInitely a beer store first, wine second, and liquor third. Had 300-350 different craft beers with some new Mikkellers and Cascade sours being the big scores. I wish they had a pick six section but most of their beer was refrigerated which was nice to see. I can’t say this is a destination place but it’s a pretty solid local.“

“Stopped in here toady for a late lunch to take a break from walking all over the mansions in Newport. Fairly unassuming restaurant looks like a chain store but isn’t. somewhat crowded for a Thursday afternoon. 7 beers on tap general pub grub menu. Decent enough beer and food, service a little to slow and prices just a bit on the high side. I’d stop in again if in the area but I wouldn’t make a trip for it.“

“Stopped in after a visit to the mansions. This is very near to the bridge and is very easy to find and convenient. Oodles of parking. Wife and I arrived around 5:30 on a Thursday and wondered where everyone was. The staff informed me that around 6 PM it gets busy and it did. The beer here was quite nice as was the food. I was wanting clam chowder on this trip and they had a nice offering of it here. They have 7 beers on tap and offer all of them as a sampler tray. A nice variety to the offerings. I only wanted their beers and do not know whether others are available. Well worth a stop.“

“Good, friendly customer service, staff actually offers to carry your purchases to your car. Also has the only drive thru window in Rhode Island. Beer selection is somewhat limited and doesn’t change much. Half of what’s available are shandys and other various fruity ales. Prices are comparable to any other liquor store on the island.“

“I very much enjoyed the experience at Coddington......the place is not huge and I’m glad we had reservations (a good idea after 6pm) and were treated very well with a pleasant server and quick service. The house brews were interesting.....I did enjoy the watemelon ale (which I didn’t think had a chance) the british style IPA.....the Irish stout was a bit too smokey for my liking but I will give the brewers props for attempting several items. I would definitely enjoy a return visit when I’m in the area. A great neighborhood brewpub.“

“Stopped in for lunch on 7/3/13. Nice looking place from the outside and looked fine inside, but kinda smelled like B.O. Got a sampler of all 7 beers. Subpar to average. Turkey melt was fine and the curly fries were the best part about the place.“

“A bit off-center in a remote ugly street in the otherwise charming Newport. Easy to access by car and with lots of parking space. This is yet another typical American brewpub that is actually a family restaurant that brew their own beers. However unlike many similar resto-pubs this place is not overtaken by too many tv screens on sports channels. Seven house beers on tap, I think six of them were regulars and one was the seasonal. Beer quality is nothing to brag about. Because the beers are fresh at the brewpub they are moderately enjoyable but these are boring beer recipes meant to propose the undiscerning customer with a choice of beer colors. Food ranges from $10 burgers to $25 surf-and-turf. Generous portions. I didn’t like my pizza but other plates appeared tasty. Nothing special, but it’s not like there is many other choices in the area. Worth a stop for a meal and a beer, not worth a stop for the beer only.“

“Kind of a chain-restaurant vibe, with a seafaring theme, which makes sense given its location. Small parking lot but it looks sufficient. The food was of slightly above average quality. Food prices were decent. The bartender was pretty friendly. The beer sampler is freaking huge. $15 but you get 49 ounces of beer. They would really do well to downsize this, or at least have a smaller option, so those of us driving don’t have to leave a bunch of beer behind. Three of the seven beers had fruit garnishes. The beers were all pretty one note... not bad and not great. Since Coastal Extreme is so close, it’s worth a stop.“

“This is probably your best bet for finding decent craft beer in Newport at a bottle store. The selection isn’t mind blowing and the prices are a nip high, but they tend to cover all the important bases of import, national, regional, and local.“

“Sandy’s Liquors has one of the best selections in Middletown. The staff is always friendly, cheerful and willing to help. A few times they gave me a free pint glass with my purchase. Selection includes a good number of 22oz from White Birch, Fireston. Berkshire, Lagunitas to name a few. Good selection of 4 packs from Sixpoint, Green Flash and clown shoes. This is not just my favorite spot in Middletown for beer, but probably the best on Aquidneck Island.“

“A nice brewpub just outside of Newport, RI. It is split into a bar side and restaurant side, definitely family friendly. Lots of pictures of the old town on the walls. It was fairly quiet when I was there on a Monday afternoon. They had around 8 taps on when I was there. Mostly average beers, and some of the styles weren’t my favorite but there are enough that you can find something. The food is on the pricier side, but good (I had a tasty lobster bisque). It was a great place to get my Rhode Island tick :-)“

“My family has eaten here on a number of occasions and I am surprised that I have not reviewed this place before now. They usually have six beers on tap, three regular beers and three seasonal brews. The place itself is nicely decorated and there are several large televisions in the bar area. The service is usually excellent and the food is very good as well. If you are in the Newport area looking for local craft beer, your two options are this place and Coastal Extreme Brewing which is just down the road. Family-friendly and worth the visit.“

“As CharlesDarwin stated, Newport is a desert if you are looking for a decent place to pick up craft beer. I have probably visited eight or nine different liquor stores in my trips to Newport and the surrounding area and have to say this is the best store I have come across. One major plus is that they sell singles, which no one else seems to do in Newport. There is not much to pick from for international beers, but the selection of local beers is better and includes seasonal and one-off beers. Again, its not a top notch beer store, but you should be able to find something to bring home, which can’t be said for most places on the island.“

“Visited in April 2010. Pretty much everything MartinT said. Except there was no English Mild when I was there. Wouldn’t really come back for anything that was available when I was there. Not to say there is anything particularly wrong with the beers, they are just not very memorable. Run-of-the-mill sums it up perfectly. That might sound rather damning but it is not intended to be. It’s an unpretentious workhorse (which is no bad thing in the Newport area) and I doubt it is intended to be anything different. It does what it does just fine. I’d probably go back if passing as there would likely be some new beers to try but I wouldn’t make a detour for a second visit.“

“Not in a desirable area considering how beautiful and picturesque newport is but the brewpub had a nice pleasant atmosphere with plenty of seating and a decent sized bar .. very clean inside.. the food was great had lobster bisque and a lobster roll ..menu had usual pub fare and seafood .... the beers were average and easy drinking with a low abv .... it was expensive, but then again pretty much everything around newport is .... the waitstaff was friendly and I really like the logo of the brewery .... The food being good really helped me enjoy this place more“

“Stopped in for some lunch and a sample of there beers. I got bored before I sat down. This a very ho-hum brewpub. Two different fruit-flavored wheat beers is usually a bad sign. The beers were okay, drinkable, but nothing interesting. I did have a very nice Lobster roll, but the fries that came with weren’t worth it. The waitstaff was pleasant and friendly. Again, considering the general lack of a craft beer scene in the region, this is pretty much your only choice. Again, to me, surprisingly expensive.“

“I would almost suggest that this place isn’t worth stopping at. However, having wandered the Newport area in hunt of "beer museums" this place seems like a brilliant oasis compared to the beer desert that is most of the Newport area. The selection here is not impressive. There is a limited range of imports, locals, and seasonals. But, if you find yourself with nothing but Sam Adams around and are craving a little more variety, do it up.“

“This run-of-the-mill brewpub offers lots of sessionable beers (the strongest was 5% abv!) that are all cleanly made and drinkable. The decor isn’t much to look at and the food is also nothing memorable (the lobster club was okay), so I wouldn’t recommend a beer lover to make a detour to come here, but then again nothing we had there was flawed. If I were to come back through these parts, I’d come in for a pint of English Mild.“

“We visited here after a day trip to Newport. We were very pleased with the overall experience of this brewpub. My wife and I sampled a few of the beers. While they may not have been at the top of their categories, they were certainly decent enough. My wife and I both opted for seafood while we were here, and we were not dissapointed. She opted for the stuffed shrimp and I went for the stuffed scallops. They make their own stuffing here which was excellent. They also had a decent enough kids menu for my daughter. The decor was a little bland, but then again they weren’t trying for the expensive ambiance.“

Food was your typical bar food. Good prices. I got seven 7oz flight of their beers for only $12.75. But not one of them were amazing. “Nice, clean attractive place, if a little bland looking. The servers were very pleasant, and prompt. The selection was comprised of seven beers in season at the time. The beer selections were diverse, and the beer is certainly very enjoyable, if not necessarily world class. The food was excellent, with a diverse menu, from standard pub fare to more traditional American fare. I felt for the food and the sampler, the price was reasonable, if not a bargain. Overall, a decent place. Certainly worth patronizing. I would certainly come back here if I return to this area.“

“Nice seat in front of the Brew house. Service was pleasant and our server was prompt and very helpful. Gave me a stack of coasters-very nice. She even looked up the phone number for Newport Storm! brewery! Food was great and beer was very good, fresh and well carbonated. Liked the Irish Red. Passed on the growler but they were available. “A bit of a drive for me (40 minutes) but worth checking out. Small pub setting with a separate bar area with a nice large screen TV over the bar. Good beers brewed on the premises on tap and they have growlers available. They had seven beers with the sample platter, which are all good but if you want a really wide selection you are out of luck. The food was really good bar fare and not too expensive, especially for fresh seafood dishes (mostly fried but oh so good!). Great service and very clean. Will go back when I’m in the area.“

“Popular place wit the locals, and lots of tourists in the summer. Food is slightly above average, beer is ok, service on a whole is usually not that good, but there are a few employees who stand out and are great. They all seem to be boared and not enjoy working there, but are much moe pleasent when i tried to be pleasent with them. Place is clean, with wood panaling and old pictures of newport. One pool table near the bar, always pretty full on a friday or saturday night. Food and growlers seem a little over priced for what they serve, but the locals have the money for it. My most current visit i had another sampler tray and nachos, and watched the Celts game with a friend. If at the bar, try your best to avoid Jeff the customer. Best beer i had recently was the Winter Warmer.“
