“Nice little place with lots of beers with this concept of pouring your own. Expensive on the long run but avoids you getting too much beer.“

“Open, well lit, self-serve beer hall with 57 taps (though 4 were wine). Servers were reasonably attentive. Food was decent, though bar food. Overall, a good stop if in Montgomery.“

“Small family operated brewery, with super friendly folks and some very nice beers. Started as a home brewer and now has a one barrel system. Spent a few very worthwhile hours there sampling all their beers on tap and chatting with the owners. Highly recommend!“

“Tucked away on a side street (more like a driveway) off of Montgomery Road/US 22 & State Route 3 in suburban Montgomery, this club has been serving up comedy for over three decades. The seats aren't the most comfortable and the layout is strange (get there early or you'll be seated on the left side and might not be able to see the stage) but the atmosphere is friendly. Plus, the place has a resident dog, Puffin the pug. The beer list has the usual macros and standard craft selections with a couple of surprises: two Founders brews, Green Gypsy (which they were out of during my NYE visit) and Porter. Local breweries were adequately represened by High Grain, Sonder and Rhinegeist. Some creative cocktails for those so inclined (not me; I don''t drink hard liquor) and wine as well. The food is above average pub grub. Go Bananas isn't a beer destination by any means. But it is a good place to see comedy and have an acceptable brew.“

“It had been since 2012 that I had been Dreamland BBQ. They moved to Railyard brewing location as the brewery is visible from the seating. Was able to a 4 beer sampler flight. Beer was average, but that BBQ is delicious as I remembered. Almost forgot to say that the southern service was some of the best I have had while in Alabama.“

“Light are dimmed here with rock music on the radio. Couple bartenders here. Simple food of pizza and eat Don’t see souvenirs and to go beer. 18 of their own beers and 6 left hand beers. Friendly atmosphere. I like the place. Cheers!“

“Visited here on a Friday afternoon during the pandemic, not long after opening. So I'll have to re-rate someday. They had a big white tent on the main lot for more outdoor seating. There's a patio on the other side, and the inside has a large bar in the middle, pizza kitchen at one end, and tables all around. I think it used to be a pizza place but can't remember the name. They have a pretty big tap list, about 16-20 of their own and a dozen or so Left Hand beers. They have some kind of partnership, which is odd. The food menu is pizza and apps, but we didn't eat. Flights are $12/4 pours. I had the IPAs, and they were okay. Service was attentive but it wasn't crowded. Overall, the beer did not strike me as anything special but I can revisit later and get some food and try some more variety.“

“Cool location in downtown Montgomery in what used to be a warehouse, I'm guessing. Interior is large with lots of wood and brick. Server was friendly but not about the beer, just the food. There were 4 or 5 beers from Railyard with a few other Alabama beers on tap. The beer was average. The BBQ was excellent. Prices were average. Overall, this is not a beer destination but a good restaurant which offers their own beer; it is a restaurant first, brewery second.“

“In a bad mood after finding Leroy closed due to a problem with the electricity, this Mexican restaurant quickly lifted my spirits. Besides the fine burritos, the (bottled) beer list is surprisingly large for a restaurant in Alabama. Mix of well-known internation stuff and local micros. Service was quite friendly and interested in our travel plans. This place saved our evening from becoming a disaster.“

“Stopped by to fill up my cooler with some local beers on our trip through Alabama. This shop doubles as a beer/wine store and a deli that serves hot meals. Really friendly people who were eager to advice us on local options. Unfortunately, packs of cans are not to be broken up, which significantly reduced our playing field. We had to settle for some interesting bombers and a handful of cans from a designated fridge for singles.“

“Out of the way place. 7 beers on today, none particularly bad or good. $16 for a flight of 7 - a little pricey for the location and beer quality. Small noisy taproom.“

“Visited on a July afternoon. I didn’t care for the building very much, kind of a creep feeling to it. The tap room area is small, several tables and a few signs of the brewery’s beer like they might use at a festival table for decoration. Staff was friendly. I found the prices high, especially for the 6 beer sampler at $15, I was not happy that my wife paid so much for it. No much variety in beer and far too expensive. I know they just opened, but the quality is not there yet, and all of the beers so far are very ordinary; blond, pale ale, brown, etc.“

“Every time I’ve been to The Village Tavern, it’s been the night before Thanksgiving and we’re hanging out with friends who are back in town for the long weekend. It’s a corner bar in the northeast suburbs, so it’s that kind of place. It’s big, but crowded on weekend nights. The food is average. The service is average. The atmosphere is average. The beer list is below average, and I wouldn’t have added it here. But in the spirit of inclusion I’ll rate it and be a good sport. It’s mostly macros, and a few local and national crafts. Nothing you can’t find at any other bar. Not really worth the trip unless you have no choice.“

“A great small restaurant in Montgomery. Their craft beer selection is excellent and diverse. Their food is pretty good too (I highly recommend the skillet cookie) They also offer live music. Seating is limited, but it’s definitely worth a trip. And on cool evenings, be sure to sit on the patio.“

“June 2013. Another reason to check Ratebeer’s list of places when visiting somewhere. Only discovered this place thanks to that! Leroy is a groovy little joint in a very strange but cool location, just 1/2 mile across Cloverdale from the Pine Bar. It’s a small space, but the day I visited they had 18 very quality taps, ranging from regional to Belgian and Evil Twin. They also have a sturdy bottle selection. They have a cool old library ladder behind the bar and the bartender was cute and friendly, too.“

“Why would anyone come to Montgomery to buy beer? This small store gives you a small beam of hope if you need a fix for a couple months... Slightly expensive but nice selection. And the staff is AMAZING - took time to help me pick out local brews - and the accents can’t be beat...“

“Made a quick pitstop while driving thru Montgomery. The shop is a bit interesting with a really nice wine section, a deli and an eating area. While the beer selection is not huge it is well thought out and if I were local I would be quite happy. Picked up some nice locals and the prices were quite comparable to the best I pay.“

“Very interesting place to grab a Mexican dish and a great beer. The food was amazing. The beer way above average tap and bottle list. Unfortunate I had my two children with me and this place really doesn’t cater to them. No boosters or high chair, not even kids menu.“

“Wow, out of nowhere this place bring light to a dreary state of beer. They sell beer from Michigan, Kansas, to include many more not so common places. Also cares Birmingham AL canned beer. Along with steeply priced imports. Worth the stop for sure.“

“This is a rather interesting frankenstein type of place with a wine and beer shop, meat store, and deli. I haven’t tried their food, but they have absolutely the best selection of beer and wine I have ever seen in Alabama. I buy my beer here almost exclusively.“

“A good, local hangout spot, not a huge selection, but occasionally they will have something good on tap or stored away in bottles, but you gotta ask.“

Pine Bar (Bar)
501 CLOVERDALE RD
“February 2011. Right next door to Filet and Vine in the revival Cloverdale neighborhood, Pine Bar is a cozy little joint with a great style and sense of humor. Although they apparently normally have 8 offerings on tap, the night I visited they only had 5 -- mostly well-chosen craft beer. The bottle selection was excellent, at least for Alabama, with a wide variety of imports and US micros. No food here, but they’ll let you bring stuff in. The service rocked, and I really enjoyed the setting.“

“February 2011. In an interesting revival neighborhood near downtown Montgomery, F&V is an interesting mashed up place of a deli, wine shop and grocery. They have a solid lineup of import, regional and oddly far away microbrewery beers here too -- far and away the best retail selection I’ve found on my few visits to Alabama. Disappointed there were no singles, but I suspect that’s a product of state regulations more than their desire to offer a great selection of beer. <<Update, June 2013 -- several singles now, but only bombers. Still best retailer in AL that I know of.>>“

“February 2011 -- Situated in the revival Cloverdale neighborhood of old Montgomery, El Rey is a groovy little joint. Not much more than a little bar with a very small dining room and a nicely sized patio, the menu goes beyond burritos to the full array of American-Mexican options. The night I visited they only had 3 offerings on draft -- Aventinus, Sierra Harvest, and Sprecher Abbey Tripel (nice variety!). The bottle list, however, especially for Alabama, was pretty good -- with numerous Belgians and other mostly European imports, and regional micros. The food was very, very good too. My only slight on this place was the service -- not very good. But I’d still go back if I as stuck in Montgomery any longer than I unfortunately am.“

“Derk’s is a combination lunch buffet restaurant, deli/market, wine shop and beer store. The management has taken advantage of the newly raised ABV limit in Alabama, and has a substantial selection of craft and imported beer. These guys are really friendly folks, and they’ll strive to get whatever you’re looking for if they don’t already have it. The lunch buffet is popular with Montgomery’s upper-crust employees in the Old Cloverdale and Downtown/capitol districts.“
