70 /100 HIGASHIMUKI NAKA-CHO 6 Taproom with their own Yamato Brewery beers.
Tasty pizzas. |
68 /100 KINTETSU NARA STATION, FLOOR B1, HIGASHIMUKI 28 This is a SAKE bar. Only one beer: Super Dry on tap. To the left as you are facing the ticket machines, with the station gates at your back. A standing-only bar with most of the Hoshuku sake lineup at very reasonable prices. There is a 3 sake tasting set, all their regular sake, plus a few seasonals and some flavored stuff. Food is typical izakaya fare, prepared beforehand and then heated up, so don't expect gourmet. Prices are cheap. Good place to try some local sake while waiting for your train. Cash on delivery system. They also had a set of 5 small bottles to go for ¥1600: good for ticking. |
70 /100 HIGASHIMUKI NAKA-CHO 6 Flashy brewpub that was opened just before corona hit. Just on your left as you enter the shopping street from the Kintetsu Station. They are backed by Kintetsu corp, so they have funds. About 10 beers on tap when I went: their 4 regulars and one seasonal, plus 5-6 from other Japanese breweries. Also about 50 bottles, all Japanese craft, to drink in or to go. Many bottles from Minoh, Ise Kadoya, and Johana. Tasting set is their 4 regulars. Prices are quite fair. Food is pizza, meat, and bar snacks. Probably the best place to get Japanese craft in the area. |
64 /100 956-2 KIDERACHO Located in the South of Nara City by a sake brewery.
The good:
Nice stylish decor, friendly staff, good beers.
The not so good:
No flights, small with just bar seating and prices on the high side for a Brewpub (820¥ for a M).
It was busy when I went on a Saturday afternoon, a decent place but not too easy or cheap to sample brews. Their beers were better than when I last had them which is what you want out of a new place. |
60 /100 956-2 KIDERACHO Got there about 7:20 and it was time for last orders, so only had 2, the wheat and IPA and both were good. The staff said sometimes they have 7 or 8 varieties, but usually just 4-5. Glasses are 1,080 for 500ml. Nicely fitted place, with lots of wood and big glass windows. Food menu looked good. |
66 /100 1-8-14 NISHI-MACHI, KITANOSHO An industrial area behind Aeon mall. Only 3 beers on tap (Gose, Stout and Pale), but all were excellent. Crowler machine had the Gose and a wheat on offer (500ml for 750). Draft prices are fair, 500ml for 700yen. Outside seating is nice, inside cramped and just 2 tables (until we asked for stools). Friendly serving staff. With more selection and a better taproom layout I could see this being worth the hike out there. I walked from Nara station (50 minutes) and on the return walked to Koriyama station (20 minutes). |
78 /100 1-8-14 NISHI-MACHI, KITANOSHO Note: I visited before the regular tap room opened, so this description is based upon my impressions of the place and my experience with their beers. I will update after going again. Take the Aeon Mall shuttle bus from Kintetsu or JR Koriyama station. The brewery is almost next door to the mall. 4 taps, all their beers, glasses are 355ml for ¥500 and 500ml for ¥700. Their beer has been very good from the get-go. They also have a crowler machine. The guys are great. The inside area is a bit small, but with nice weather you can sit outside as well. |
62 /100 Wine no Oji-sama (Beer Store) 52 NABEYACHO Wine no Oosama is in a beautiful old Japanese building. Chatting with the staff I learned they opened 2 years ago in a 200-year-old former sake brewery. They’ve got a huge selection of wine by the bottle or the glass. I was surprised to find a standing bar barrel area and a raised platform with two tables on tatami mats - much more bar/bottle shop than just a bottle shop. They’re Belgian beer specialists with two taps and 30 or so bottles including two Japanese (Nara label Echigo) craft beers. It’s the only worthwhile beer place I know of in Nara City. Bonus it opens from 11AM so it’s a good place to pop in for a drink and enjoy the A/C. I just wish they had more J-craft, more of a wine than beer place but still nice for Nara. |
