“Decent, rather small beer shop with focus on beers from the region, but also with canned and bottled beers from further afield. About ten minutes walk from the train station towards the city center. Polite service. Has got a very informative website. We came here for beers from Lincolnshire, and found quite a few from Brewster's Brewing and 8 Sail. (Visited with Finn 14.10.2022).“

“Central located JDW close to the St Mary Church in Newark.10 cask ales including three from the October festival. Halloween decorated. Outdoor seating facing the market square. Decent traditional English breakfast, as always. Great value. Polite service, calling me "sweetheart" and "darling". About ten minutes walk from the train station. (Visited with Finn 14.10.2022).“

“Loved this micropub which features in the 2018 Good Beer Guide, and we enjoyed Black Iris Bleeding Heart from the good selection available. Long pews with a central area to walk down to the bar, and a lot of interesting things pn the wall difficult to read due to it being busy in there, but I did enquire about the biscuit pig chart on the wall, and was told it was very popular with the regulars. Pay £1 and pick a name from the biscuit barrel and your name goes against the celebrity name on the chart. If your choice is the first to die you get the pot. Brilliant!!“

“Busy 2 roomed pub featured in the 2018 Good Beer Guide with a decent ale selection. We enjoyed our Acorn Summer Pale and Bath Gem sat outside, and the massive 16" pizzas coming out on massive square trays looked good too.“

“Gorgeous old building (c15) which houses a pub that's really a restaurant. Part of the Knead pub chain, although the beer selection is slightly more adventurous than their other pubs I've visited, with the likes of Conwy, Magic Rock and Abstract Jungle on cask. Thought about eating but due to the cramped conditions we decided to drink up. Probably noticeably more brilliant outside of traditional mealtimes.“

“Monty Python themed music pub in the centre of town. They even have a dead parrot (not real of course)! The beer range is small but pretty decent: a few cask from the likes of Black Iris and Leatherbritches, keg from Lagunitas and Brew York, as well as some German and Belgian beer, and a good smattering of bottles. To call it a craft beer pub is a slight stretch, but it will almost certainly have something to grab your attention.“

“This is the first micropub I'd ever been to so it holds a bit of nostalgia for me.one small narrow room with good music playing low the only interruption to conversation. Eight handpulls (three of which were ciders) with good breweries such as Wylam and Pentrich. No keg but there is a smattering of bottles including a few crafty cans alongside some German and Belgian offerings. Really worth a visit.“

“A reasonable arm of the small chain of Blue Monkey pubs. There's not so much choice here: a good handful of sessionable BM beers on handpull but no keg/packagwd choice to speak of. I like Blue Monkey but feom a ticking perspective there isnt much. Still its pleasant enough with drinkable beer and pleasant locals. Missable but not a bad place to stop.“

“Small beer shop - with a very well-judged selection - near Newark Castle. It tends to lean toward the traditional British brewers, although they carry plenty of the 'craftier' names from the UK and beyond. Orkney, Ashover, 8 Sail, Thornbridge and Beavertown are a few of the breweries featured. Also a small selection of US stuff thats not so easily available, such as Mother Earth. Exceptionally low prices.“

“Visit at Friday lunch and I was nice And busy. Old feel with lots of rooms over two floors (I think). Big bench tables and a small bar. Nice friendly staff. The food looked expensive and not tried on this visit. Reasonable selection of local beers on cask with a range of cider too.“

“Really liked this pub in the centre of Newark. New the castle and only a few minutes walk from the train station (castle not northgate). Looks like a multiform bar all knocked into one big bar, due to the different room its all on different levels. The bright prime colour painting isn’t to my taste. They appear to have live music occasionally, and had a band warming up while I was there. The beer selection was excellent, on both cask and keg (mainly regional micros) with some choice Belgian offerings, plus a large bottle/can selection, and usefully the fridge is on top of the back of the bar where the spirits usually are, makes it really easy to see what they have. The beer garden looked huge.“

“Bit of a delay rating this, but I saw Mr. Pink’ rating and recalled enjoying a visit here very much. Walked here from the station, which played havoc with my mate Joe’s none sock protected feet. Very quiet and comfortable on a midweek afternoon. Friendly chap serving beer in excellent nick. Nice little patio out back, too. One of those boozers you could spend an extended session in, happily not ticking, and just drinking.“

“Popped in on a Friday afternoon as it was fairly empty, despite the Beer Muda triangle beer festival being on. I guess Saturday would be the bust day. Lots of smaller seating areas in an open plan bar. 7 hand pumps of their own beers, and a few national / international keg regulars. They had a few of their own bottles on sale too. Nice enough but a bit of a walk from town on a cold afternoon.“

“Really nice micro pub in the centre of Newark not far from the trent. Its small but still bigger than some micro pubs. It was bust when I was there due to the Newark Beer Festival, but still service was quick. They had 22 beers on tap at my visit, and some really interesting ones. Great atmosphere, great beer and well worth a visit.“

“As the name suggests, this is a barge moored on the river close to the castle and opposite the old maltings. The main bar is downstairs whilst upstairs is a children’s room / function room. There are also benches on the bank so the large patio is larger than the boat. There were only two taps in use when I was there but nevertheless it’s a very attractive place, with good food and friendly service. (Visited 9 October 2014).“

“This is a Wetherspoon pub but in a nicer location than most, at the side of the attractive market square. At the front it’s light and airy with large windows and a nice prospect but, typically for ‘spoons, further in it’s a bit crepuscular. The service was friendly and efficient, even though it was very busy. (Visited 9 October 2014).“

“The Organ Grinder in Newark is very similar to the one in Nottingham but smaller. It has the same blue fronted bar and eye catching line up of Blue Monkey pump clips; similarly there are a couple of cosy areas with open fires, much like little sitting rooms, and a bright (but tiny) courtyard. They have seven hand pumps plus five keg taps with guest beers. (Visited 9 October 2014).“

“The Just Beer Micropub is in a yard off the main street so it’s not necessarily easy to find but it’s well worth the effort (go under the archway diagonally opposite the Flying Circus pub). As the name suggests, it’s small - long and narrow, with church pews down one side and a wide selection of CAMRA magazines from local branches neatly displayed behind. The bar, at the far end, has eight handpumps with an ever changing selection and each of the beers has a little label neatly printed with information about the beer and the brewery. “Neat”, I think, sums up the place nicely. Everything about it is neat, clean, tidy and well kept. I’d recommend it. By the way, it isn’t just beer - when I visited, four of the taps were ciders and they also serve pork pies and a cheese board. (Visited 9 October 2014).“

“The Flying Circus is a bright and cheerful looking place painted in primary colours with lots of fun decorations such as model aeroplanes suspended from the ceiling, a piano with four accordions on top and a frieze showing silhouettes of John Cleese doing his silly walks. They have eight hand pumps, four ciders and an eclectic bottle list of 60 or more. There’s what they call a “charcuterie menu” (with cheese as well as meat platters) and a beer garden of sorts in a long, whitewashed alleyway running the length of the building away from the street. There’s also an upstairs room overlooking the model aeroplanes. Unfortunately the barmaid didn’t seem to like my face (and who can blame her, I hear you cry!) and went out of her way to be rather unwelcoming. (Visited 9 October 2014).“

“A charming half timbered building on a narrow shopping street close to the centre of Newark. There are several small rooms full of character, with low ceilings slung with hops, a quarry-tiled floor and mismatched scrubbed pine tables, settles and armchairs. They have six hand pumps with beer mainly from small local breweries and six or eight less interesting keg taps. The service was very friendly and welcoming. I didn’t eat there but the menu looked nice. (Visited 9 October 2014).“

“A small, multi-level pub with lots of little areas holding just a few tables. It could be really nice but it looks as if it was renovated in the ’70s or ’80s and time has stood still since then so it seems dated rather than olde-worlde. There are six hand pumps and they had a couple of local beers on when I visited. I had Oldershaw’s Castle Blonde (possibly brewed specially for them or perhaps a rebadge?). Incidentally, there’s another place next door called the "Pound Pub" - all halves £1 - but I didn’t try it. (Visited 9 October 2014).“

“Real ale store in the centre of town. You park in Morrisons around the corner and walk through the supermarket to this shop. Excellent selection of local brewers in Lincolnshire, Nottingham and Derbyshire. Some Scottish beers and a decent if small selection of American, Belgian, French and German beers. Glasses for sale too. Friendly service that did not hurry me at all but displayed good knowledge when I had questions. A definite destination if you inthe area“

“This is a really pleasant, small shop, just away from the main shopping area, but nicely situated amongst some smaller shops, close to decent pubs too. They pack in a very decent range of beers for all tastes. A good selection of local bottled ales then from far and wide. The young lad who was serving in there was covering whilst the owner was on holiday and was doing a sterling job. A must visit in Newark.“

“The Newark version of Charters bar, this is a large old grain barge has been moored under the shadow of Newark Castle. There is a long bar underneath the main deck, it’s a little dark down there. Food is the main reason for coming on board but there is a reasonable range of beers. Take a look.“

“We were expecting so much more from this having visited the Nottingham version, but we found this to be somewhat cold and un-atmospheric, there were very few people in and the beer range seems to be a little static. “Quite a large pub on Castlegate with a single room downstairs but an additional mezzanine type area upstairs. The original theme is obviously Monty Python, but there is a whole mish mash of others, 60’s psychedelia, Beatles, Snoopy and the Red Dragon, quite confusing. There are 5 Hand Pumps with two badged for the pub beers, some craft keg’s and lots of bottled beers from Belgium, States etc. Interesting place if a little odd.“

“Small, single roomed bar just off Castlegate, this is a haven for the Real Ale drinker in Newark. Hardly any bigger than a garage, it fits in comfort, friendliness and good old fashioned service along with an ever changing range of real ales, bottles and ciders. Winner of quite a few local awards already, a must visit in this town.“

“On the water on the other side of the bridge to the ruined castle, this floating pub offers an alternative place for drinking than the norm. The bar is below deck and sports enough real ale pumps to please with a couple on rotation with a local focus. Beyond the service area are the seats but naturally it’s fairly cramped given there’s a limit to the boats width, however this is the charm of the place. If the weather is good though there’s tables on dry land for lubbers, right outside the gangplank. The upper deck has seating too although it’s mainly used as the restaurant area, however if you’re in either of the latter two places I have mentioned you’ll be guaranteed fine river views.“

“In one corner of the beautiful and enclosed Market Place which has a worthwhile market when it’s on, this pub is a convivial enough Wetherspoons. Despite feeling a little downmarket for the very well-to-do Midlands town that clearly does not suffer from too much social deprivation, it’s a popular venue for the usual vices of people using this chain. The ales and food, although not at their cheapest for a Spoon are generally the cheapest in town. It’s a fairly traditional set-up inside the ground floor that works, but I expected better. Seating is either side of the central door in open plan rooms with the service area against the back wall. Outside seats are available in the Market Place which makes it a great place to people watch.“

There is a good range of beers from Britain, as well as some foreign beers. The range of beers from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire is particularly strong. Recommended.“

“A very friendly and well run beer store in Newark. Carries around 200 bottles, and as well as the obligatory Belgians, there is an impressive amount of British beers, mainly sourced locally. The store owner also offers discount deals on the local beers. This is, to my mind, how a beer shop should be run. Attractively presented, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable service, and a focus on supplying and promoting local beers. If you’re in the Newark area, this shop is well worth a detour.“
