72 /100 Bier Draak (Bar) 42 KING STREET The popular Sir Toby's Market Store has been around in the Norwich Market for a while, this is their newly opened bar just to the East of the castle area. It is bijou, just a small shop type area, with the bar to the back, right and some tall tables and stools for seating. The beers are all keg or packaged from the Sir Toby's range with the addition of a few guest beers. It was handy for our return to the Bus Station after a long trawl around Norwich. One to keep an eye on. |
64 /100 Plough (Grain) (Bar) 58 ST. BENEDICTS STREET On the way back into town from the Ten Bells, this is a neat and tidy pub a bit deeper than you expect. Quite quiet on my visit. Lots of places to sit. The beers were mostly from Grain. Worth a look for local beers. |
58 /100 Glasshouse (JDW) (Bar) 11 WENSUM STREET Nice Spoons with free wifi etc. I came in here for 2 beers which were visible on their app but I'd just missed both of them, so I ended up at the Beer Hatch (just down the road) |
70 /100 Beer Hatch (Beer Store) 22A WENSUM STREET Lovely place with 5 beers on tap usually (only 3 when I was there). Free WiFi. 2 beer fridges with a good beer assortment |
58 /100 41 ST. ANDREWS STREET Came in here to try and have some of their brews. There's a sign on the bar "card only" and I couldn't be bothered and went to the Beer Hatch instead (which does take cash). Looked nice otherwise. Free wifi. Seats outside for nice weather. |
70 /100 82 THORPE ROAD Nice brewpub with free WiFi. 8 of their own beers on handpump. 2.30 for a half. They do food. They are dog friendly. Seats out front for nice weather. |
76 /100 Plasterers Arms (Bar) 43 COWGATE STREET Visited previously twice, in late '16 and early '17. Most recent visit on Saturday 27th January 2024, approx. 2115-2230.
Street corner local about a 12/14 minute walk from the centre. I've always taken this in on a crawl on the way back from the Brewery Tap (Fat Cat) and it's close to the Kings Head.
Doing a decent trade this time round but maybe not as busy as previous visits and perhaps 2 or 3 less beers on tap (and arguably less interesting ones) than my previous pre-covid visits. None the less a tidy street corner local with a 50/50 mix of cask and keg (12 total) and a good balance of local cask and nationwide keg on the whole. Good service and a youngish local clientele.
On my previous visits I put this up there and not far off the Brewery Tap but its dropped off a bit for me. That said well worthy of a visit. |
62 /100 Bell Hotel (JDW) (Bar) 5 ORFORD HILL Busy Spoons pub with the visual free WiFi. It's split level with different taps on both levels. If you can't see the beer you want, ask for directions to the other half. |
62 /100 Queen of Iceni (JDW) (Bar) UNIT 6, 1 WHERRY ROAD. Nice riverside Spoons pub with free WiFi etc. A little more expensive than usual at 2.88 a pint but you are paying for the view I guess. |
72 /100 Sir Toby's Beers, NFK Beer Box (Beer Store) UNIT 182 MARKET PLACE, GAOL HILL Nice little market stall on the RHS of the market (look at the signs at the bottom to see which aisle it's on). Large bottle and canned beer selection of local and European stuff. 4 UK/European beers on tap. Friendly service. |
72 /100 Plasterers Arms (Bar) 43 COWGATE STREET Visited August 2015. |
74 /100 BrewDog Norwich (Bar) 1 QUEEN STREET Visited 3/9/2022. Have walked by many times whilst in Norwich but met an ex-work colleague here for some Saturday afternoon beers. It was supposed to be one beer here before heading off to the regular haunts, but we ended up spending 4 hours here and then it was time to get the train home. It's big inside, but we sat outside in the sunshine and whiled away the time watching Norwich's finest go about their business. There was a West Yorkshire theme going on with the guest beers. The beer fridges (MrPink take note if you ever revisit!) are not easy to spot but are situated beyond the bar hidden from view. |
72 /100 Artichoke (Bar) 1 MAGDALEN ROAD On a main road, not far from the Plasterer's. This may be an LGBTQ type community pub, it has that vibe. Quite modern, quite busy on my visit. Good list of beers to go at. It's a relaxed, vibrant pub. |
56 /100 Whalebone, Norwich (Bar) 144 MAGDALEN ROAD This is a rambling pub on a road junction on a busy road, not far from the Duke of Wellington. It's a touch shabby but fine and friendly. A small range of beers from local breweries. Worth a look if in the area. |
70 /100 Duke of Wellington (Bar) 91-93 WATERLOO ROAD This is a corner local in a suburban part of Norwich where there are a few decent pubs within a short walking distance. There was a pleasant, young barmaid, from Georgia I think, but her Spanish was excellent too. A well written up board from which to make your choices, lots of banter in the pub. Well worth a visit. |
80 /100 98-100 LAWSON ROAD Even though the Fat Cat Brewery is attached to the bar this is now branded just the Brewery Tap. It's quite large inside, the bar is on the right and has a large array of beers in both cask and keg, with the lists on chalk boards. Good friendly, helpful service. Well worth the walk out of town. |
38 /100 Queen of Iceni (JDW) (Bar) UNIT 6, 1 WHERRY ROAD. Vast Wetherspoons in a new development in Norwich, close to the Railway Station. It's light and airy with crammed in seating and quite a few of the standard JDW problems. There is an upstairs seating area which seems more relaxed, plus a patio. |
80 /100 Duke of Wellington (Bar) 91-93 WATERLOO ROAD Not much has changed since we lasted visited this corner, suburb pub back in September 2006. It is still a very proper local, refurbished pub with focus on cask ales in association with the Wolf Brewery. Friendly service offering tasters of their well kept ales. A good vibe with Beatles tunes in the back at our stay on a Thursday afternoon. (Visited with Finn 11.11.2021). |
78 /100 98-100 LAWSON ROAD From what we understand, this is no longer a Fat Cat pub, but a newly established independent pub, so far called Brewer Tap. A modern-traditional place with a beer garden at the front and in the backyard. Solid selection of beers with 8 cask ales and 18 taps supported by cans and bottles. The draught beers can be served in 1/3 pint measure. Friendly service. (Visited with Finn, 11.11.2021). |
64 /100 Bell Hotel (JDW) (Bar) 5 ORFORD HILL A rather small-sized spoons located next to the castle gardens in Norwich and close to the Murderers pub. We found four new ales among their cask ales, which is very good. Decent and cheap traditional breakfast as always on the JDWs. Polite service. (Visited with Finn as our first stop on a pub crawl in Norwich). |
80 /100 Fat Cat (Bar) 49 WEST END STREET Visit July 2008. |
74 /100 41 ST. ANDREWS STREET Good beers. Good food. |
70 /100 Plasterers Arms (Bar) 43 COWGATE STREET Cozy cornerpub. Limited selection. |
76 /100 Duke of Wellington (Bar) 91-93 WATERLOO ROAD Lovely corner pub in a residential area. Good selection of mostly local beers. |
80 /100 98-100 LAWSON ROAD Large place 20-25 min. walk from the city centre. 8 casks. A lot of kegs. Good variation. |
82 /100 2-8 TIMBER HILL Top pub! A lot of local beers. |
54 /100 Bell Hotel (JDW) (Bar) 5 ORFORD HILL Typical ´spoons with 12 cask ales. |
80 /100 Louis Marchesi (Bar) 17 TOMBLAND Lively establishment, they had a open mic night when I visited. A decent selection of ales and quick service. Recommended. |
64 /100 Belgian Monk (Restaurant) 7 POTTERGATE Reasonable imitation of a Belgian beer bar, small fairly cramped interior. Service was on the slow side, the beer list is fairly good but with the more well known Belgian beers much in evidence. Fills a niche market but not outstanding by any means. |
66 /100 Fat Cat & Canary (Bar) 101 THORPE ROAD A bit of a humdrum establishment, nothing really stands out. The ales I had were decent enough but better pubs to be found in this city. |
88 /100 Ribs of Beef (Bar) 24 WENSUM STREET Very appealing pub, small but comfortable. An eclectic range of ales were available, my pint of Railway Porter from 5 Points was spot on. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere make this one of the nicer ale outlets in Norwich. |
82 /100 82 THORPE ROAD Decent enough boozer, the Chalk Hill beers I tried were of sufficient quality. My first trip to Norwich and a good introduction to the local real ale scene. |
64 /100 Leopard (Bar) 98-100 BULL CLOSE Visited 23/7/2021. One of the areas circuit pubs in the Norwich beer month. Nice pub and friendly service but not much on offer beer wise on this visit. |
74 /100 Malt and Mardle (Bar) 163 MAGDALEN STREET First visited 23/7/2021. Have popped in 3 times now. Very compact place made to seem all the more small by the choice of dark wall colouring. Tap list was more interesting in earlier visits whilst can range has got progressively more interesting. Run by very enthusiastic people and it enhances the north of the river route. Deserves to succeed. |
74 /100 Louis Marchesi (Bar) 17 TOMBLAND Visited 23/7/2021. Decent range of ales and local ciders. Friendly helpful staff. Comfortable. Good food. Well worth checking out. |
52 /100 Rumsey Wells (Adnams) (Bar) 4 ST ANDREWS STREET Visited 23/7/2021. Called in as it was on the circuit for the Norwich pub month. Decent enough pub and good service but limited choice of beers. Just 2 Adnams beers on this visit. |
76 /100 Alexandra Tavern (Bar) 16 STAFFORD STREET Visited 5/7/2021. Located very close to the Fat Cat, but this was my visit here, lured in by their participation in the Norwich Pub Festival. Cracking street corner pub, super welcoming staff, the sort of pub I wish I lived close to. 4 cask ales on offer including an excellent MrWinter’s I’d not seen before. Has the best ever bus shelter! Very much worth a visit before heading back to the city if over this way for the Cat. Great value too. |
80 /100 Artichoke (Bar) 1 MAGDALEN ROAD Visited 23/10/2020. Late Friday afternoon visit, place was already very busy. Excellent selection of beers on tap and extensive canned/bottled list. Three Hills featured heavily. Good service, friendly atmosphere. Disappointed I'd not visited before when venturing north of the river but got no further than the Kings Head or Pasterers before. Artichoke is much more modern in its offering than those two excellent cask focused places and well worth a visit if visiting that part of Norwich. |
78 /100 98-100 LAWSON ROAD Visited 23/10/2020. Sat outside due to Covid limitations on numbers (though have visited before when you could do crazy stuff like easily sit inside a place). Barn like interior as people have said before, decent size patio garden. Good service, friendly crowd. Less of their own beers on than I’d seen on previous visits. Probably covid related. My mate ate there, said the food was very good. Certainly a visit to Norwich should include this place but it is a bit out of the centre. |
70 /100 Duke of Wellington (Bar) 91-93 WATERLOO ROAD Visited 23/10/2020. Good pub, large multi-area interior, nice atmosphere. Decent selection of ales on offer. Worth a visit if in area. |
70 /100 Rosebery (Bar) 94 ROSEBERY ROAD Visited 23/10/2020. Proper traditional side-street locals pub (the sort that Norwich council seems happy to allow to close) and one I wouldn't have visited had I not been out with a local touring the pubs north of the river. Not a wide range of beers but the small selection of cask ales were well chosen (had a super pint from MrWinters), landlord and regulars were friendly. Really nice pub, I'd definitely visit a lot if I lived nearby. |
74 /100 Artichoke (Bar) 1 MAGDALEN ROAD On a junction of several roads this is a welcome addition to the pubs to the north of the city. Long horizontal pub and bar with seating outside. Light wood throughout. Excellent mix of cask keg and bottles. |
68 /100 41 ST. ANDREWS STREET Fairly large bar / restaurant (But the usable bar space if small) with both cask and keg lines. 5 of their own cask beers And 3 keg were being served when I visited. Dog friendly.
|
80 /100 Sir Toby's Beers, NFK Beer Box (Beer Store) UNIT 182 MARKET PLACE, GAOL HILL Small market stall on the outside edge of Norwich’s very good market placed. Three taps and a small amount of seating plus well over 100 (I’d say) cans and bottles. One section for local breweries. Well worth a visit. |
70 /100 BrewDog Norwich (Bar) 1 QUEEN STREET When you walk in you know what to expect. It has the usual BrewDog industrial feel. It’s bigger than some and maybe a few more taps. I didn’t see very much in the way of bottles or cans the fridges behind the bar were fairly empty. One or two members of staff were rude. As usual free WiFi and dog friendly. |
96 /100 Plasterers Arms (Bar) 43 COWGATE STREET Good vibe, good people and good beer - oh and good food as well! |
82 /100 Plasterers Arms (Bar) 43 COWGATE STREET Was suitably impressed when I visited during on a trip into Norwich late last year, great choice of beers and a great atmosphere! |
100 /100 Fat Cat (Bar) 49 WEST END STREET Busy pub with nice staff and cheap beers. |
