58 /100 Charters Bar (Oakham) (Bar) TOWN BRIDGE A marmite kind of place I feel, as a previous reviewer says, is it a boat or is it a pub?
A lot of Oakham beers on as well as a few guests. My guest ale was perfectly fine, no complaints about the quality. Not for me really, but others will find it appealing in a niche non pubby kind of way. |
80 /100 Ostrich Inn (Bar) 17 NORTH ST. Decidedly quirky backstreet pub, also a live music venue. A good choice of cask ales, relaxed vibe and some interesting posters adorning the walls. Not too sure about the seating outlay but this is a minor quibble. Essential stop if you are in the vicinity. |
72 /100 46 WESTGATE Small micro bar with limited seating, fellow behind the counter very accommodating and a convivial atmosphere. Five cask ales, beer quality fine, no complaints from me. Beer paddles available. Worth the time seeking out if you're in Peterborough. |
80 /100 Bottle & Board (Bar) 11 WENTWORTH STREET Visited with travlr 21.1.23. A small place that you might not even see if youre not looking. At first glance, this place doesn't look up to all that much. A few fridges and a handful of taps. On closer inspection however, there's loads of interesting stuff here. Some beers from US heavy-hitters such as Stone and Oskar Blues (US beer seems harder and harder to get in the UK), some Belgians and Germans (including quite a lot of Winterbier). The taps had some fairly basic stuff plus - hold on - two Struise beers including Pannepot Reserva and a Black Damnation. Wow. The pricing seemed a bit all over the lkace: The bottles look very overpriced but the taps were surprisingly reasonable (£3.40 for a third of 13% Black Damnation). Really worth a look. |
74 /100 Bottle & Board (Bar) 11 WENTWORTH STREET What a pleasant surprise it was to find a very tasty geuze that I had not rated. Barman knew his stuff. Uncomfortable rickety chairs. Would visit again. |
72 /100 Blind Tiger (Bar) 11-13 COWGATE Visited with jjsint. Former store front. Good beer list, displayed on a board a la Untappd. Service was a bit too anxious, but OK. Thirds possible, as well as flights of three. No food. Decent stop. |
64 /100 Hand & Heart (Bar) 12 HIGHBURY STREET, Visited with jjsint, first stop on our pub crawl. Scruffy but friendly. |
70 /100 Charters Bar (Oakham) (Bar) TOWN BRIDGE Last stop of the night with jjsint. This is a large canal boat. So the decks are sloped, making you feel drunk, but we were not drunk. I swear. Iceni meads and two perries were here, as well as lots of drunk but friendly football fans. And there were lots of drop kick dogs. |
74 /100 Hand & Heart (Bar) 12 HIGHBURY STREET, Visited with travlr 21.1.23. Lovely traditional pub about 15-20 minutes' walk to the north of the centre. Landlord is friendly and happy to have a chat. The beer selection was not massive on the Saturday early afternoon when we arrived (place had been drunk almost dry the night before), but the three cask beers available (two from Brewsters and one Bakers Dozen) were all worth drinking, condition spot on. Visit this place, pubs like this are disappearing. |
84 /100 Blind Tiger (Bar) 11-13 COWGATE Visited with travlr 21.1.24. A lovely taproom which concentrates on beer. There are about 20-25 taps, offering pretty much anything your heart could ask for. Local, national and worldwide (a Stone takeover had just finished, and a Meet the Brewers with Top Rope was scheduled the following week),with loads of different styles and ABVs. Pricing not impossible. The feel of the place is spacious if a little sterile but I can live with that. Recommended ad one if the better places in town. |
66 /100 80 WESTGATE Stopped in for a quick pint but too late for food, so I'll have to return. Crowded on a Thursday evening, but not uncomfortably so, with most people standing and milling about by the bar. Most people were drinking Bud as well. Half a dozen Oakham beers on offer plus a couple of guests as well as four ciders-in-a-box. Music not too loud. A decent stop. |
72 /100 46 WESTGATE Tiny place - a micropub, according to the sign. A standing bar plus five tables, that's about it, in what appears to be an old storefront. Small but interesting selection of cask beers, keg and cider mostly from around East Anglia. Mini cooler of cans and bottles from farther afield, on display behind the bar. Very friendly staff and locals. No food. Nice stop. |
82 /100 Stoneworks (Bar) 8A CHURCH STREET Visited on a Thursday evening, just one person and me at first, then the place slowly filled about half way. Serving bar with 25 taps plus one cooler of cans and bottles. Scattered bar and restaurant tables. Great music, '80s punk. Server knew the beers well and was generous with samples. No flights per se, but they do thirds or halves in any amount. Decent selection from all over England. Bottles and cans were mostly East Anglia. Solid place. |
74 /100 Stoneworks (Bar) 8A CHURCH STREET Visited 22/1/2022 with SHIG and danlo. |
76 /100 Blind Tiger (Bar) 11-13 COWGATE Visited 22/1/2022 with SHIG and danlo. |
72 /100 Charters Bar (Oakham) (Bar) TOWN BRIDGE Visited 22/1/2022 with SHIG and danlo. |
82 /100 THE EMBANKMENT, EMBANKMENT ROAD A large marquee village springs up every year on meadows close to the river. Loads of outside space in addition to the three large marquees. There's even a funfair for the kids. Hundreds of beers on cask plus in recent years a successful keg bar also. Loads of food options over every sort imaginable. It's a great festival that I'd recommend to anyone. |
74 /100 Blind Tiger (Bar) 11-13 COWGATE Fairly new place in the city centre. 25 taps including a good range of styles. Enthusiastic staff. They have a crowler station. A decent addition to the Peterborough beer scene. |
76 /100 Blind Tiger (Bar) 11-13 COWGATE Modern style bar close to the main square in Peterborough. The bar is directly in front of you as you walk in with the beers listed on the screen behind, looked to have about 10 taps in operation on our visit. Enthusiastic owners / staff looking to run a beer festival in the downstairs place with cask on stillages. A really good addition to the town. |
66 /100 Bottle & Board (Bar) 11 WENTWORTH STREET Small pub just off the main drag in a back street corner. There are a few tables outside then an open shop type unit inside with large plate windows. There are 5 keg lines in operation but they also have plans to put in some cask lines when funds permit. Fridges full of bottles and cans from around the world. Worth popping in. |
74 /100 Blind Tiger (Bar) 11-13 COWGATE Modern bar near the main town square in Peterborough. About 20 taps with a good selection of modern craft breweries including some from breweries I had not tried. The decor is half modern bar, half warehouse feel. It's a bit of a mish mash. They do have a crowler station, and do food although I didn't try that on my first visit. |
76 /100 Hand & Heart (Bar) 12 HIGHBURY STREET, About 10 mins walk from Peterborough Central this is a very traditional back street local, off the main Lincoln Road. Kept in the manner of a 1930's pub it has won awards for the interior. The Landlord is a beer enthusiast and it shows through with the range and quality of the beer he has on. The atmosphere in the pub tends to be driven by him and his mood at the time. It's certainly well worth the effort to get there and you certainly will be rewarded with some interesting beers. |

66 /100 80 WESTGATE Visited July 2018. |
56 /100 Great Northern Hotel (Bar) STATION ROAD Visited July 2018. |
64 /100 80 WESTGATE On the north side of the shopping centre, it's basically the last building before you hit the main road that separates the train station from the town centre. A large open plan place with two floor, the upper seemingly the restaurant area of this Oakham operation, although I didn't venture up there. The bar is against the back wall with plenty of space in front as the chairs and tables don't start until your closer to the front part of the building - possibly a dance floor area but it was way too early in the evening on my visit for anyone to be frequenting it when I was there. Most of the Oakham regulars are on cask here alongside a current seasonal special. Its keg options were all macro brews. |
68 /100 Ostrich Inn (Bar) 17 NORTH ST. At the end of a small back street opposite the north side of the shopping centre, this is a traditional pub with a slightly more modern touch on the inside including a stage for music to the right just after you enter. The bar is central in the building with seating and defined areas pretty much all around it, also with a rear patio garden area, which in the December month of my visit I never bothered to go and check out. Has a decent row of cask ales in the middle of the bar with all the prices chalked up on one of the exterior walls. |
56 /100 College Arms (JDW) (Bar) 40 THE BROADWAY Central Wetherspoon pub on a busy enough road just to the north of the shopping centre. A corner pub with a carpeted traditional decor and design there's a long bar close to its front window sporting the usual selection of regular and guest cask ales (perhaps a little too usual on my visit as there was nothing new for me to sample here during my visit!). A busy affair, but it was a Friday before Christmas and for whatever reason the other Spoon in the centre was closed everyone who wanted to go to use this pub chain that night were in here! |
48 /100 Sir Henry Royce (Bar) 1-3 THE BROADWAY Close to and on the opposite side to a Wetherspoon, looking like one on the outside and in, and with a similar food menu. It's a large open plan place with various seating areas and a long bar straddling most of the left hand wall. There's a line of cask ales in the middle of it but they're all macro brews, mostly from the Marstons range when I was in. |
66 /100 46 WESTGATE Micropub opposite the northern side of the shopping centre with a central doorway and seats either side of this. The bar in the small room is against the back wall with a selection of cask ales available from microbrewers backed up by a couple of keg options. Steamed up windows on a busy Friday night in December. |
72 /100 Stoneworks (Bar) 8A CHURCH STREET Split level and slightly underground to begin with, this central bar looks a little more like a coffee shop from the outside. The bar in an upper section at the back sports plenty of keg lines so there's probably a fair selection at any time, but as I walked in on a Chapter Brewery takeover the choice was obviously different during my pre-Christmas period visit. Busy on a Friday night. A fridge of craft cans is also a fixture. |
62 /100 Charters Bar (Oakham) (Bar) TOWN BRIDGE A permanently moored boat bar and restaurant just below the central road bridge on the south bank of the River Nene. The upper deck is a restaurant with stairs immediately taking you down to the bar area once you've boarded via the gangway. Here the long bar is riverside with all the seating down the bankside of the long room, with a mix of Oakham and guest casks available. I didn't go to the restaurant but you can eat in the bar as well. The boat leans sideways somewhat as it's probably resting on the river bed, and as I doubt its tidal at this point it probably will always be this way unless there's a flood. Landlubbers can take advantage of some riverside seating. |
60 /100 80 WESTGATE Visited here with the family NYE. Very large spacious brewpub. The beer selection was mainly Oakham, but they had several others to include ciders. The Thai food was the highlight over the beer. If you're near station and have time to stop I would say do it. |
100 /100 Stoneworks (Bar) 8A CHURCH STREET An excellent and constantly changing variety across 23 lines. Knowledgable and passionate staff. Also holds regular events like tap take-overs with lots of big name breweries |
100 /100 Stoneworks (Bar) 8A CHURCH STREET Great beers and atmosphere, my favourite bar in Peterborough |
100 /100 Stoneworks (Bar) 8A CHURCH STREET 23 lines of craft beer and a decent cocktail menu.
Bottle/can fridge has some interesting beers too.
I really like the tactile smoothness of the shuffleboard, but avert my gaze from the exposed Victorian tiling as I find it far too elaborate and it makes my mind interior chaotic.

72 /100 Charters Bar (Oakham) (Bar) TOWN BRIDGE Barge on the river in Peterborough town centre. Range of Oakham beers and some other local beers. When I visited bakers dozen. It’s all on a bit of a slope which is off putting. Plenty of outside seating on dry land. |
74 /100 THE EMBANKMENT, EMBANKMENT ROAD Very spacious beer festival on the embankment in Peterborough. Three main marquee one on each side with the beers and an entertainment one at the far side joining the two. On a nice day there is lots of grass outside for seating, but inside this can be limited. Normally about 350 beers including a keg bar. In addition there are also bars for international bottles, wines and gin. Big emphasis on eastern England breweries as you would expect. I’ve been on a Saturday but only limited beer left. So worth a mid week visit. Other Peterborough bars including charters and Stoneworks mark the ocassion with their own festival or a tap takeover. |
86 /100 THE EMBANKMENT, EMBANKMENT ROAD Peterborough Beer Festival is an annual event, held on the last full weekend in August on the Embankment fields just off central Peterborough, within 10 minutes walk from the Railway Station, the closest pub being Charters Bar. It is held in a series of marquees with bars in the left and right marquee's and a stage for bands in the far marquee. The beers are served straight from the cask in most cases but there are some hand pumps. Mostly they are set in alphabetical order by Brewery, however local breweries may have their own bar or be served from a different locals bar. There is a beers of the world bar too. There have been issues in the past from mid afternoon closing plus lack of seating, whilst the seating remains a touch sparse, the festival runs throughout the day now. It is big and well organised, roughly 350 cask ales, a model for how large Festivals can be run. The beer is in largely good order and there is always something worth seeking out, we usually visit over 3 days and there is plenty for us. Well worth visiting. |
54 /100 Hand & Heart (Bar) 12 HIGHBURY STREET, Still a very locals place ...6 handpulls on with a good variety of beers on... |
32 /100 Sir Henry Royce (Bar) 1-3 THE BROADWAY I really wouldnt bother ...It just full of the local drunks and down and outs ..... |
56 /100 College Arms (JDW) (Bar) 40 THE BROADWAY Large open plan Spoons place good selection of local real ale ... |
62 /100 Charters Bar (Oakham) (Bar) TOWN BRIDGE Still worth a visit been coming here since the 90's when it opened....full Oakham range on plus local guests.... |
60 /100 Stoneworks (Bar) 8A CHURCH STREET Not many beers on ..on this visit...what i had was ok.. |
