“Make sure you go to the friendly Riverside Bar round the left hand side of the hotel, rather than the posher (and deserted) restaurant & cocktail bar at the front. As the name suggests, the Riverside Bar overlooks the rushing river below (at least if you get a seat on the tables at the far end. There’s six real ale taps (although they may not have them all on out of season - 5 were on at the end of September). There are 2 from Jennings, the remainder offering beers from other Cumbrian micros - got three breweries that were new to me here. The beer condition was excellent. Surprisingly they’ll do three thirds for the price of a pint - rather unexpected in a rural pub in the north. There’s also the usual macros on keg & bottle. It serves huge portions of tasty food, often locally sourced, and the food prices seem a little cheaper than other pubs in Borrowdale. Clientele is a mix of friendly locals and hillwalkers, and there’s definitely a friendly chatty vibe to the place, with a pleasant mix of drinkers & diners. Staff are very friendly & efficient too. We enjoyed our visit here & would definitely return if we were staying in Borrowdale again. It seems to be the best option in the valley at the moment. No chocolate mints with the coffee though (the waitress agreed with our opinion that this is something sadly lacking in the modern world, and that amaretti biscuits are just not as good!).“
