70 /100 QUOYLOO Quite a nicely set up tasting room and restaurant though catering for bus tours. Five taps. Flights of three (1/3 pint). Store next door has all their beers. If in the Orkneys and driving the West Coast stop in before or after the bus tour lunches. |
74 /100 QUOYLOO First review in 10 years(!). There has been a complete renovation and change of the brewery taproom set-up since then so I believe you can disregard the last reviews. Orkney brewery is very handily located out near Skara brae (5mins drive away), so should absolutely be on your list of things to do. Firstly I should mention that I am a great fan of the brewery for their take on traditional Scottish beer. The brewery taproom & restaurant is well located in a restored Victorian school, in fact they are one of the most child friendly breweries in the isles - kids tours and a nice child’s menu. 4 cask ales on offer and a few kegs, as wells as the full range of bottles. Food was of a good standard for the Orkney's but perhaps sounded better on the menu than it was. We were treated well. Don't expect loads of new beers, but whatever is in season will be on tap for you and super fresh. An Orkney must-visit. |
76 /100 Ferry Inn (Bar) JOHN STREET Nice, down to earth pub cum restaurant, with good food and a not exactly extensive but rather focused selection of good quality Ales including Orcadian ones. The crowd consists of fishermen, Orcadian folks through to the occasional tourist which gives it an authentic and lively atmosphere. |
70 /100 Ferry Inn (Bar) JOHN STREET 4 casks, 2 from Orkney and 2 from Highland at my short visit. Seating area on the outside, overlooking the busy harbour was full, so we ventured inside, a cosy dark wooden traditional pub, with a very long bar. Service minded personell. Wouldnt mind spending an evening at this nice place. |
64 /100 Stromness Hotel (Bar) THE PIERHEAD Upstairs in the hotel (it's not the wee dive bar to the side!). The three hand pumps offered only Orcadian beers (good) but Josh told me his Scapa Special had diacetyl due to its being off...however, we liked the place overall and ordered a few whiskys. They also have a separate whisky bar. |
58 /100 Ferry Inn (Bar) JOHN STREET Situated right on the harbourfront, it is a nice pub but with an interior more like a family restaurant. 3 real ales on when we were there including the ubiquitous and always reliable Scapa Special. |
58 /100 QUOYLOO Great place to visit. Have a few reservations (hence the less than perfect score). Mainly 2 of the cask beers were tart in the finish (they are usually fab brews, how can the brewery condition be less than ideal?), and the tour could have been better in the sense that a wee taste of the kegged Skull Splitter would have been appreciated. The tour guide also made some sort of comment about how beers cant be made with smoked malt, which we all know is mallarky. But all in all Orkney rules. So close to Skara Brae too! |
60 /100 Stromness Hotel (Bar) THE PIERHEAD We visited July 2nd 2013. Pub is located on the first floor with a nice view to the harbor. They have a dining and a pub area in the same room. They serve two real ales from Orkney and two from Highland brewing. They have more of their beers in bottles. Food is quite good too, good selection of sea food. Absolutely recommendable. |
60 /100 QUOYLOO We visited July 2nd 2013. Very professionally managed brewery. Was founded 1988 and brewing beers for two breweries - Orkney and Atlas (from Fort Williams). They offer brewery tours every 30 minutes. Tours are informative and concise, you will not learn anything new. Beer tasting is included for 5 GB pounds. Honestly I am not a big fan of their beers, very light. I like the Skull Splitter and the Dark Island is ok too, others do not have a lot of flavor. They have a nice restaurant attached and also a metchandising shop, T-shirts are not best quality. If you are on the island however you have to visit. |
50 /100 Ferry Inn (Bar) JOHN STREET We stayed 2 nights in the hotel from July 1st to 3rd 2013 and spent two evenings in the Pub. Rooms were absolutely ok, Pub is average, highlight: they are serving 4 local beers, 2 from Orkney brewing and 2 from Highland brewing. I prefer Highland beers, but all are very well tapped. If you stay on the island, we can recommend choosing this hotel/pub. |
