64 /100 2216 UNIVERSITY BLVD Visited March 2017 during a tuba conference. I visited three breweries in town and this was by far the worst as far as beer goes and towards the bottom of the list as far as the venue as well. In a strip mall downtowny type place with street parking, which sucked ass on a Saturday night. Not their fault, I realize. Long, narrow bar with a good amount of seating leading to the brewery. Giant Jenga on the cement floor was so annoying my group decided to move upstairs to the game room, only to be told they were closing it for the night. Bartenders were nice and friendly and could answer questions about the beer, but were obviously miffed that I ordered flights (it wasn’t THAT busy). The beer ranged from mediocre to "I can’t finish this awful diacetyl ridden disaster." I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to stop in if I’m in town again. |
78 /100 607 14TH ST Visited March 2017 while at a tuba conference. I visited three breweries in town and this was my favorite for beer but second favorite for location/the hang/atmosphere, though really none of the beer in Tuscaloosa was excellent. Small place in sort of a weird location. It gave off a strong hippy vibe, but I’m not sure if that’s just because of the band that was there that night. Super nice bartender, knew about the beers. Small space but there were tables in and outside and inside there were cool video games and board games to play, which kept our group occupied. Were I to hit town again, I’d be back! |
80 /100 Southern Ale House (Restaurant) 1530 MCFARLAND BLVD N Visited March, 2017 during a tuba conference. Was brought here by friends who "knew I’d like it because they have a bunch of beers and stuff." Pretty decent place. Plenty of beer on tap I hadn’t had. Nice place, sort of a fanciesh casual lunch joint. Server was super nice and had casual knowledge of the beers - enough to suggest others when one was out, etc. Food was good but overpriced. Would go back if in town again. |
84 /100 Corks and Tops (Beer Store) 701 PAUL W BRYANT DR Nice little place with a good selection of brews. Prices have gotten much more competitive recently, so if you haven’t checked this place out in a while, give it another look. |
84 /100 Loosa Brews (Beer Store) 412 20TH AVE Terrific place to cap off my visit to Tuscaloosa. Very nice setting, especially compared to what else is in town. Antique-ish furniture sprinkled throughout the shelves and coolers. Nice and comfy, and a convivial atmosphere overall. Great service and generous samples from their extensive tap list. Fine place, for sure. |
78 /100 Corks and Tops (Beer Store) 701 PAUL W BRYANT DR Little gem tucked away just off campus, and just a couple minutes from my hotel, happily enough. Not much to look at but a surprisingly good selection. The staff was terrific and made some great recs for me. Beer to go as well. Must stop in T-Town. |
86 /100 607 14TH ST Visited 2.5.16 in the afternoon, on our way from Jackson to Birmingham. Small taproom with turntable and a nice vinyl selection, board games and low seatings for living-room-like ambiance which was nice. Sat on the bar, among chatty locals. Serve flights and mixers - shandy and such. Some beers are OK, some less, but everybody was nice and friendly and open and that was pretty cool. Was definitely worth the stop! |
78 /100 Corks and Tops (Beer Store) 701 PAUL W BRYANT DR very good beer selection, very helpful staff |
86 /100 607 14TH ST Stopped in to have a beer one Saturday. I’ve had their stuff at other locations but wanted to try it at the source. They do a really good job, can’t wait to try all the new stuff. The bar is pretty small but there is a patio area out front with additional seating. These guys are the real deal, great Alabama brewery |
80 /100 Loosa Brews (Beer Store) 412 20TH AVE Cool bottle/growler store that also offers pints. Bar is in the back and offered up plenty of Alabama beers along with some killer guest taps. Prices were decent, but it does suck a little that they don’t break up 6-packs and 4-packs to let people buy singles. Nonetheless, I good place for beer shopping if you’re a local. |
84 /100 607 14TH ST Small place that wasn’t the easiest to find my first time as I didn’t realize it was on the backside of the strip mall that faces the street. Solid diversity in brews with more than enough on tap to justify the visit. The staff, especially the owners/brewers, were some of the coolest people in the industry I’ve ever met. Those guys alone would make this my local spot if I lived in T-town. A lot of fun activities here including cornhole, trivia, and live music. Definitely a cool place that I will go back to. |
82 /100 Southern Ale House (Restaurant) 1530 MCFARLAND BLVD N This was a very nice find in Tuscaloosa! Craft beer and good food, together under one roof in my home state - what is going on here? There are around 20 taps, all craft with a slant to AL brewed beers and a few dozen bottles/cans. They offer four, 4-oz. sample size beer flights, full pours and a special $2.50 menu, where I was able to snag a Westbrook One Claw. The food is simply amazing - well prepared with a southern slant. This is another must stop when you are in T-town. |
80 /100 2216 UNIVERSITY BLVD Alabama laws have finally changed for the better and now my college town has two breweries, albeit over a decade following my attendance. Located in downtown, Black Warrior is well-positioned in a growing small business scene. The staff keep your glass full and methodically move from patron to patron, all while mixing in their shift duties. There were 7 or 8 beers from the standard lineup, 2 small batch beers and a randalled beer further infusing apple pie spices into their Apple Pie Blonde. No samplers are available, but a modest 9-oz. option is a nice size for enjoying a few beers. Alabama laws still have an impact here, in that no growlers are filled. This is a must stop in town and one of the better AL breweries. |
72 /100 607 14TH ST Visited on a Alabama football gameday, the brewery opened early. Located in a shopping area, the front of the brewery kind of looks like the back door of the building. Pretty small taproom, a couple tables and maybe 8-10 chairs at the bar. They also had some outdoor picnic tables when we visited, but I’m not sure if that was just for football Saturdays. Around 6 beers on tap when I visited. I only tried 1 due to time constraint and it was alright. A nice hole-in-the-wall place that might be worth another visit. |
94 /100 Corks and Tops (Beer Store) 701 PAUL W BRYANT DR This place is awesome and the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly! It has been my go to beer store for the last two years now! |
92 /100 Spirits Wine Cellar & Spirits Lakeside (Beer Store) 4851 RICE MINE RD NE They have very friendly and knowledgeable staff. They also have a good selection and awesome prices. The other place in tuscaloosa charges up to 50% more for some of their beers than this place. It is definitely worth driving a couple miles away from campus to go here if you are a student. No other place in tuscaloosa compares to this one. |
62 /100 Corks and Tops (Beer Store) 701 PAUL W BRYANT DR Basically a smoke shop with some beer and wine...Tuscaloosa is a beer desert so the fact that they actually have SOME craft beer makes them special. |
80 /100 607 14TH ST Druid city tap room reflects your typical hole in the wall type place. Meaning it’s fairly atypical of most bars/breweries. With a friendly staff and great service as well as good beer, I will be excited to go back for a visit. |
70 /100 2216 UNIVERSITY BLVD An up and coming brewery that had a pretty good showing for its first week. Cool rustic taproom with well though out seating. I will be very interested to see how they do over the next year. Worth a visit for sure. |
64 /100 607 14TH ST It is nice that my college town finally has a brewery again, a drought that began in the mid-90’s. This is a small taproom just off campus in an small shopping area. The beers are decent and small batches are made. I am looking forward to their continued production and hope to see growth over the coming months and years. |
92 /100 Corks and Tops (Beer Store) 701 PAUL W BRYANT DR great beer |
68 /100 Corks and Tops (Beer Store) 701 PAUL W BRYANT DR This is one of the two best liquor stores in Tuscaloosa County, and that is particularly nice given this ones proximity to campus. The owner was very friendly and helpful and tossed in a free koozy for my haul. There is a nice array of locals and regionals with a few imports (Belgian, not Mexican). |
64 /100 Spirits Wine Cellar & Spirits Lakeside (Beer Store) 4851 RICE MINE RD NE This is one of the two best liquor stores in Tuscaloosa County, but that is not saying much. I realize that my home state has a long ways to go, but this store is carrying a fair number of pretty good beers. I was able to stock up on some local brews not available back in MD, so that was nice. Friendly staff. |
98 /100 Spirits Wine Cellar & Spirits Lakeside (Beer Store) 4851 RICE MINE RD NE This is THE place to buy beer in Tuscaloosa, especially if you aren’t college age, more mature crowds here. |
74 /100 Spirits Wine Cellar & Spirits Lakeside (Beer Store) 4851 RICE MINE RD NE Great place to go if you’re not from the area. I easily found a couple mixed-sixes of beers I can’t get in Texas including Terrapin, Bells, Founders and more. Only bummer is not much (and none of the singles) is refrigerated. |
78 /100 Spirits Wine Cellar & Spirits Lakeside (Beer Store) 4851 RICE MINE RD NE The place to go in Tuscaloosa, a bit hard to find unless you venture outside the university area. Good folks, fair prices, good mix 6 selection. Be aware no bombers yet due to the law on container size. |
72 /100 Spirits Wine Cellar & Spirits Lakeside (Beer Store) 4851 RICE MINE RD NE Similar selection to Letters but location is much further out from the campus, singles available also |
78 /100 Corks and Tops (Beer Store) 701 PAUL W BRYANT DR Centrally located store with surprisingly good selection. Bells, Cigar City and even some Fish Tale in addition to the usual local and regional stuff, all available as singles |
66 /100 Spirits Wine Cellar & Spirits Lakeside (Beer Store) 4851 RICE MINE RD NE Came through here last weekend. The place has almost wall-to-wall bottles. It was not until I looked through them that I realized that the selection was pretty good. Several more Florida beers that were not anywhere else, as well as some Baltic Porters, and Cadillac Mountain Stout. The man at the counter left us alone until checkout. If you have two places to go in Tuscaloosa, this one is worth a stop. |
74 /100 Corks and Tops (Beer Store) 701 PAUL W BRYANT DR Of all the places I went looking for good beer in Tuscaloosa, this one was on par with the best of them. The clerk took a long time to ring up the beer, but he had a fair knowledge of the products. They have a beer cave with good selection as well as locals like Olde Town. They have Southern Star, Cigar City, Boulevard, Abita, De Dolle, amd afair selection of Belgians. It had several shelves of beer that the other stores did not. If you hit one package store while you’re in Tuscaloosa, go here. |
66 /100 Corks and Tops (Beer Store) 701 PAUL W BRYANT DR For being on a college campus, Letters has a surprisingly good selection of micro and high gravs. Staff is friendly, beer is overpriced but not murderously so. A decent place considering its in Tuscaloosa. |
88 /100 Spirits Wine Cellar & Spirits Lakeside (Beer Store) 4851 RICE MINE RD NE For a college town, Spirits has an amazing selection. Some people say its not that great, but as another reviewer noted "that’s like complaining about water in a desert". staff was very knowledgeable and the bottle prices are great. Make your own 6 pack option is nice and the staff updates its beer picks weekly. Lots of seasonal specials, and many microbrew bottles for 1.99 or less. A pint of sprecher scotch was 2$. Can’t beat that in Tuscaloosa. |
82 /100 Spirits Wine Cellar & Spirits Lakeside (Beer Store) 4851 RICE MINE RD NE Tuscaloosa’s premier source for gourmet beer and ales |
