“We visited Kitsch, Saturday 7th July 2018, after watching England beat Sweden in the QF of the World Cup 2-0 in a nearby bar. After an evening in Eltziego, Rioja we drove 50-60 minutes north to spend the afternoon and evening in Vitoria-Gasteiz, there was a Campervan stayover further out of town about 25 minutes walk away from the old town. This place is very central and is in the old town, on a street which isn't that steep despite the moving walkway in the centre of it. Kitsch and Guernica are close to each other just a couple of minutes walk apart. This place had a modern feel and look to it, the decor was simple and inside it was quite spacious and uncluttered. There was seating to the left and the rear of this establishment, it also opens up a little more at the rear/back though we never ventured here and remained just a few feet from the bar. The bar is on the right hand side just after you enter, the beer display is clear and sits behind the bar but high enough that you can easily read it. I think access would be suitable for wheelchair users as I recall it being flat and the door quite wide.

The range of beers on offer was very good, there were a number of the Wylam Northern Powerhouse Project to choose from on tap but I could also see this in can as well, they were offering flights of these. The international choice was very good with plenty of UK and others from the USA, I had a Cascade Bourbonic Plague, Loz had a Tempest Trimotium DDH IPA. There were two barmen the one who served us really knew about his beers and was very enthusiastic. There was a mixed crowd in here, with quite a number of folk standing outside. I think that it had AirCon in here as it seemed much cooler than Guernica. We really liked it here, we liked Guernica also but this was our favourite of the two. Prices were perhaps a bit more expensive but maybe that was because I was drinking an American import. “

“We visited Cervecería Guernica Saturday 7th July 2018, after watching England beat Sweden in the QF of the World Cup 2-0 in a nearby bar. We'd decided to spend the day and night in Vitoria-Gasteiz and had parked the camper up at the Campervan stayover which was about 25 minutes walk away from here. This place is very central and is in the old town, its also very close to Kitsch Pop Bar which is just a 2 minute walk away around the corner and up the slight rise. Its a rectangular configuration with bar on the left hand wall and quite central. There are some seats down the side, and at the rear, a fridge with a good selection of cans is also on the left at the end of the bar. There is a large photo that runs most of the length of the right side of the pub and shows the aftermath of the atrocity that was inflicted on Guernica. The toilets each use a small section of Picassos famous Guernica painting to denote male and female.

We sat at the bar there was a very good beer choice on tap and both the aforementioned fridge and a further one with bottles in a room behind the bar offered an additional selection. We concentrated mostly on Spanish Micros but there were beers from further afield. The vibe was very good in here, this despite a large hen party descending on the place whilst we were there. The two staff knew their stuff and were friendly and also speedy when serving. We really liked this place with Kitsch around the corner you really should combine a visit to both if in the old town.“

“We visited Restaurante Basajaun (twice) Saturday 7th July 2018, Our first visit was shortly after we parked the camper up at the Campervan stayover a 5 minute walk away (further out) on the same road. This place is a 20mins walk from the centre of town, it is on a major road into town but there is plenty of parking nearby and the bus station is also very close on the same road.

Inside the bar is off to the left, the restaurant area is in the same room but is separated. There are a few simple plastic seats and tables outside at the rear of this establishment. We had lunch here which was excellent and very reasonably priced. We also sat outside and then later on when we returned after England beat Sweden 2-0 in the Quarter Finals of the World Cup we sat at the bar and spent a lot of time chatting with the owner and the locals.

There are four taps with Basqueland and Stone amongst those on offer, but there are also a lot of cans and bottles to choose from, not sure exactly how many but certainly in the region of at least fifty and all excellent choices and heavily leaning towards Spanish micros. The owner is a big fan of Basqueland and rates them very highly, I agree with him they are a good brewery. I was given a small bowl of little chocolate sticks to go with my Coco Chango beer, to compliment it the owner said, he was right and it was a nice touch. We really liked it here the chat was great and the locals lovely and good fun to chat with. I was also given a bottle of beer to take away with me when I left. I would definitely come here again and would recommend others seek this place out. “

“Only around the corner from Kitsch, and just as good. Bottle selection was fantastic, drafts were also very good. Service was great. The guy was super friendly and knowledgeable. Gave us some free samples and pointed us in the right direction for local beers we didn’t know anything about. I will certainly be back to Guernica next time I’m in Gasteiz. Another great new place in Spain!“

Falken, As, Molta Birra, Dougalls, etc.

“The point in the middle between the best rock bar and the best beer bar. Out of this modern/hipster wave in the beer world. Dark place, perfect music, some tables... Javi and his girlfriend really know what they do. They are nice, with a good conversation, funny and helpfully. The beer selection is the best in the country, in tap or bottle. You will find things that nobody else have. It’s a must if you are in the area. Better ask for the opening before going.“

“I arrived in Vitoria-Gasteiz on a Tuesday, and Kitsch was closed. Serious bummer. But, good thing I contacted the owner, Javier, in advance! He opened the bar just for my wife and I. We sat with Javier for a couple hours, drinking some of the Nomada beers from Spain, and even some other brews not distributed to the USA. Javier’s wife showed up, and next thing I knew, the two of them were walking us around Vitoria-Gasteiz, treating us to pintxos at their favorite places! Amazingly friendly people! Kitsch was a good sized beer bar, well decorated, and had the best selection of beer I saw in Spain. They even had bottles of Framboos. The prices seemed pretty typical for Spain, and weren’t expensive. As I already stated, service was top notch. I’m glad I stopped in Vitoria-Gasteiz for one night, and wish I could have spent even more time at Kitsch. If I’m ever back in Spain, I will go out of my way to visit Javier again. Fantastic place.“
