70 /100 Mitra Assendorp (Beer Store) ASSENDORPER STRAAT 85 When around Zwolle I sometimes stop to buy a few beers. Small shop, interesting collection. Owner organizes beer tastings online during Corona lock downs. |
68 /100 DAVO Bieren Zwolle (Bar) GROTE KERKPLEIN 9 DAVO must be doing good as this is their third taproom location, the other ones being in hometown Deventer and Arnhem. Located in the building where restaurant Bapas used to be, the location is first class with plenty of room for the biergarten-like patio outside overlooking the Grote Kerkplein. Now open for a couple of weeks, not all 15 taps were operational yet. Pretty standard selection of DAVO beers on tap, no true specials, with a couple of guest taps. Small bottle & can menu.

64 /100 Mitra Assendorp (Beer Store) ASSENDORPER STRAAT 85 I usually stop by here when I'm in Zwolle. Selection consists of Belgian and Dutch beers as well as some international craft. Been seeing US beers popping up, not cooled unfortunately. If you're a tourist in this area, get your local Zwolle beers here. The owner has a bit of a loud personality that gets on my nerves. |
72 /100 De Belgische Keizer (Bar) MELKMARKT 58 Typical Dutch belgian style pub. Crowed, good atmosphere. Pretty wide range of beers but pretty standard. (12-2007). |
70 /100 Stadscafé Het Refter (Bar) BETHLEHEMKERKPLEIN 35A Beautiful ambiance. Big patio. Pretty large beer list with some interesting brews, but not very special unfortunately. Worth visiting. |
72 /100 Stadscafé Het Refter (Bar) BETHLEHEMKERKPLEIN 35A Had a PINT meeting here. Quite an old place with a nice beer selection. Service is friendly and knows his way around in beers. It was raining so we didn't visit the large patio, which shields you off from the crowd. Mainly frequented by eaters, not beer drinkers. |
66 /100 De Belgische Keizer (Bar) MELKMARKT 58 We visited here Monday 24th September 2018. we'd cycled from our campsite on Geldersedijk on the opposite side of the river between Zalk and Hattem. It was a day of sunshine and showers following a weekend at which we'd been to both Borefts and the After Borefts Festivas which were both pretty wet and damp affairs. though still very enjoyable. De Belgische Keizer is at the top end of the main shopping street in town, in fact I think it is probably the last building on the right as you walk up.Owing to the unpredictable weather we opted to sit inside which was quiet when we arrived with just one or two others, however it soon became quite busy with a large group of people 12-14 who all appeared to order food. The layout was bar at the rear, seating on both sides with a large chalkboard on the left hand wall displaying the beer choice. As others have mentioned the choice was pretty much all Belgian which is understandable given the name of the place, but prices were fair and one can never get bored of an Orval. We both quite liked it here, it was fine enough and service was swift, if we were in town again, I suspect we'd revisit. |
70 /100 Woodies (Restaurant) MELKMARKT 34 We visited here Monday 24th September 2018, we'd cycled into town from our campsite on Geldersedijk on the opposite side of the river between Zalk and Hatte. This is was a day that was meant to be sunny after a horrendous weekend of rain, rain and more rain however today whilst we saw sunshine it was nonetheless punctuated by showers. Woodies reminds me a little of an American Diner we sat on the long bench seat on the left hand side as you enter. The music selection was hugely entertaining in its complete randomness, Michael Jackson - Off the Wall, Kinks - Days, ZZ Top - Gimme all Your Loving, with a George Michael track though not an obvious one, Talking Heads - Pyscho Killer with Cat Stevens - Morning has Broken in the middle of that lot, Btw we also heard the same Cat Stevens track in Kaapse Maria, Rotterdam yesterday???? Beer selection (bottles) is huge 14 Taps (nothing too exciting though) the bottle choice ran to about 150 but beware our first two choices were sold out, however on the plus side we did have a DIPA in the form of a Galway Bay Foam and Fury and a red IPA by Stanislaus Brewskovitch called Tukr. The one person here working the bar was busy and worked hard but lacked a little charisma. Looking around there were some rather tacky decorative touches in here, lightshades made to look like crowns loomed over the serving area of the bar, drums utilised as lighting, guitars, a fifties telly', mosaics, faux leather, big glass front, yes this is a rather bizarre place and the music gets weirder. |
60 /100 Mitra Assendorp (Beer Store) ASSENDORPER STRAAT 85 Surprisingly well stocked Mitra in the center of Zwolle. Many local and regional beers, sometimes hard to find outside the Zwolle Region. Not cheap and a bit grumpy service, but certainly worth a visit. Parking could be difficult. |
68 /100 Stadscafé Het Refter (Bar) BETHLEHEMKERKPLEIN 35A Visited on a wednesday afternoon. Impressive spacious place with a medieval style appearance located at an old square in the heart of town. A fine selection of about 20 taps and 200 bottles. While the tap list wasn’t too interesting (lots of usual suspects), the bottle list is okay with some nice Dutch and international craft (Finland-based Flying Dutchman in particular is royally represented). Not too many ticks for the experienced beerhunter, probably of most value to tourists from abroad. Weather permitting, the large patio on the square is very comfortable. *** Update: revisited a number of times. Young staff doesn't seem knowledgeable about beer. |
64 /100 Café De Gezelligheid (Bar) GASTHUISPLEIN 11 Quite a small place, with the regular ABT beers available. Orval is somehow their speciality. Not much to explore in beer world, but still OK bar. Had some life music performance so the place was packed, I escaped. |
68 /100 Woodies (Restaurant) MELKMARKT 34 Visited on a thursday evening. Interesting and warm decoration, restaurant meets bar. Pretty decent beer menu. I found the tap beers boring, but there’s a bottle list that has Dutch craft, classic Belgian and a number of European craft from fine breweries such as Pohjalah, Edge, Fierce, Mikkeller and To Øl, amongst others. Service seemed oblivious to the nuances of the beers, I ordered the listed Pohjalah Must Kuld Kenya and got the regular version, which is a good beer but I was in the mood for unfamiliar beers. The waiter did ultimately acknowlege the error, but failed to suggest a satisfactory solution. I wonder if they would shrug it off as easily if I’d ordered a steak and received a hamburger. All beers are served in Belgian style tulip glasses, regardless if it’s appropriate or not. *** Re-visited a couple of times and found the experience satisfactory. They are shaking up the beer menu a bit as well. |
76 /100 In De Buurt (Bar) LUTTEKESTRAAT 6 A nice little brown bar in the center of Zwolle. Pleasant location on the main square, probably the best beer selection in the city. Most of the same, but tends to have at least one or two surprises. Visited in 2016. |
62 /100 In De Buurt (Bar) LUTTEKESTRAAT 6 Visited on a Wednesday afternoon shortly after opening so the place was fairly quiet. It’s a small dark bar on the main square a varied but not huge bottle selection and also some varied taps that even offered up a tick each for a couple of hardened tickers. Pretty much all Dutch and Belgian, but a little more than just the obvious. |
66 /100 In De Buurt (Bar) LUTTEKESTRAAT 6 Much more interesting bottles and taps than the Belgian Keizer. It has a mix of Belgian and Dutch beers. Some beers from Ij and Maximus. Probably the best choice of beer in Zwolle. |
54 /100 De Belgische Keizer (Bar) MELKMARKT 58 Nice café bar just off from the main square with a small selection of the usual suspect Belgian beers and their own (German) witbier. Visited on a Wednesday afternoon and there were a fair few people eating although we didn’t try the food. Staff seem friendly and helpful worth a visit if you’re in Zwolle. |
64 /100 De Belgische Keizer (Bar) MELKMARKT 58 Nice place. about the only place on Ratebeer that was open on a Wednesday afternoon. as the name suggests, only Belgian beers apart from their own beer, Ome Bertus wit beer, which is brewed in Germany. No ticks apart from that for the hardened ticker |
Max 20 verschillende flessen locale brouwsels. Prijzen zijn redelijk zo ook de service. |
70 /100 Cafe De Hete Brij (Bar) NIEUWE MARKT 9 Cozy bar in the city centre of Zwolle. Warm and friendly atmosphere. Selection is decent but not really interesting, besides their house beers of which the "Blonde Brij" is a pretty tasty Belgian Ale. |
62 /100 De Beurs (Restaurant) GROTE KERKPLEIN 2 We wanted to go to In De Buurt, but it was shut. A busy place with plenty of outside seating and views of the Ould Kirk. Quite pricey, and nothing out of the ordinary beer wise, but what they had was fine, and the food was good. |
84 /100 In De Buurt (Bar) LUTTEKESTRAAT 6 Great beer selection. They had cool blues music playing. It wasn’t busy when we were there, so the bartender brought us a book with aerial photos of the town and showed us how it progressed through time. This is the best place to enjoy a beer in Zwolle. Highly recommended. |
66 /100 Harry de Smaakspecialist (Grocery Store) VAN DER CAPELLENSTRAAT 57 Nice store with lots of great products like cheese, saucages, olive oil, wine, etc etc. Also some beers from local breweries like Berghoeve. Not much, but a pretty okay selection. |
70 /100 In De Buurt (Bar) LUTTEKESTRAAT 6 Been there on a warm autumn afternoon. Didn’t went inside but sat just on the terrace close in front of the church. Atmosphere is okay, selection is okay. |
66 /100 Cafe De Hete Brij (Bar) NIEUWE MARKT 9 A centrally located brown beer bar in the heart of Zwolle. Quite a few taps and several bottles, but nothing too interesting for the ticker apart from the Blonde Brij which is brewed for this bar. Great service and fine bar snacks. Wi if too. |
64 /100 Harry de Smaakspecialist (Grocery Store) VAN DER CAPELLENSTRAAT 57 Cheese and nuts shop that also sells a lot of local products -- including beer. Disregarding that most of these beers are not very good, it’s a good opportunity for the beer hunter from outside this part of the country. And there are some worthy specimens among the bottles, try Witte Klavervier or Maallust for example. |
68 /100 Bistro Bonne Femme (Restaurant) SAMUEL HIRSCHSTRAAT 5 French restaurant with a very nice and cozy interior. They serve some bottled local craft beers, which unfortunately is still mostly an exception in this part of the country. Staff was friendly and the food was expertly prepared. Recommended for a fine meal accompanied by local beer. |
66 /100 In De Buurt (Bar) LUTTEKESTRAAT 6 Located in the old city centre of Zwolle. Nice selection of mostly Belgian and Dutch craft beers. Owners are very enthusiastic and fairly knowledgeable about the beer they serve. (However, when I asked them about US beers I was a bit disappointed to find out that they have no clue at all about the merits of US craft beer. Very ironic, since they are such supporters of US-inspired breweries such as ’t IJ and Maximus) |
78 /100 De Belgische Keizer (Bar) MELKMARKT 58 Nice place to taste a wide variety of Belgian beers. Great atmosphere and a welcoming staff. |
68 /100 De Belgische Keizer (Bar) MELKMARKT 58 As the name indicates, this is all about Belgian beers. Nice, atmospheric building in the old city center of Zwolle. Staff is friendly, but not very chatty or knowledgeable about beer. Point in favour though, they serve their Orval at cellar temperature rather than chilled. Selection is fine, most of the Belgian classics are available. One can also dine here. |
64 /100 Café De Gezelligheid (Bar) GASTHUISPLEIN 11 Nice mood, small and cozy. Some classic Belgian beers available bottled, beers on tap vary regularly. Owner is friendly and enthusiastic about beer. The beer selection is rather ’safe’ though, I wish they would broaden their horizon to include some IPA’s American brews, etc. |
70 /100 De Belgische Keizer (Bar) MELKMARKT 58 Nice cafe, nice people here, and affordable |
