“Historic old pub in a 15th century building, standing close to Wells Cathedral gardens. We sat in the room with the bar, although there were numerous small rooms and outside seating at the rear. Tap list was numbered to 18, though only 11 on during our visit. Mostly focussed on local / South West movers and shakers such as Bristol Beer Factory, Yonder, Utopian, Left Handed Giant, New Bristol etc rather than nationally distributed breweries. Beers in great condition, perfect temp. Nice pit-stop during our day in Wells. Food served, but didn't take a look.“

“Deceptively large JDW, which was very busy on the Wednesday afternoon I visited. My pint of Salcombe was served in good condition and the manager's special of chicken tikka masala at £3.99 wasn't bad either. Worth a look in a city with few decent pubs.“

“A welcome addition to Wells' pub scene, offering a decent selection of cask beers on gravity in a friendly enough setting. They get the barbeque going during the summer on the front patio. Worth a visit.“

“Decent enough cafe style pub in a back street. Quite laid back and folky. Babies were crawling around on my visit, and anyone entering had to negotiate a child gate. Three gravity casks on offer. There is a £5 deal where you get a sandwich and a pint. The pub claims to be Somerset’s first micropub, but this is not a micropub - just a pub in a new setting. There are many standard pubs which are much smaller. This place has several tables and chairs out the back, and is rather bigger inside than appears from the outside.“

“White-washed pub on the quieter western end of Wells city centre opposite the pretty St Cuthbert’s Church. It has something of an older world atmosphere about it, but with modern touches throughout. The long central stone hallway that leads all the way through the pub to the enclosed attractive garden area offers the greatest clue about the age of this place, and this rear drinking area with several tables is enclosed by residential gardens on three sides so it’s a very quiet place to frequent. There’s two front facing rooms either side of the central doorway. The one to the left houses the bar against the back wall of this room, with four hand pumps carrying regionally produced ales, all of which were fairly well known amongst ale drinkers on my visit. Food is served and is a little ordinary in choice and design, but should be filling enough. There’s a further room at the rear, which is small and appears to be carved out of the hallway area, but is arguably the most attractive, and certainly the most cosy. They were showing tennis on a television screen in here, although nobody was in it on a sunny Saturday afternoon.“

“Sante Wine Imports is a small wine shop located right on the High Street in Wells. As well as the aforementioned intoxicating beverage they have a few shelves of beers. They have plenty of local stuff from Glastonbury and such like, as well as a wide range of Arbor and some others like Magic Rock. In a city with such few beer options this shop supplied the best beers in town!“

“The Globe Inn is but a minute’s walk from the High Street in Wells. As far as I am aware this has had a recent refurbishment and is under new management. We booked a large table in the front room for a group dinner, which consisted of decent enough pub grub. The adjacent room with the bar was pretty busy due to the Rugby being on TV, but thankfully purveyed 4 cask ales from localish breweries (Butcombe, Glastonbury etc). Nothing game-changing, but they were well kept bitters and golden ales. In a town with limited beer options this is worth stopping by for a beverage.“

“The City Arms is a former jail and is well located on the High Street of Wells. It has pretty recently changed management and had a re-furb. Unfortunately I believe this has had a negative impact on the beer selection. They now only have 3 cask ales and pretty run-of-the-mill ones at that. Selection included Butcombe, St Austell and Otter Ale. No exciting bottles of keg of note. Service was friendly and the place was rather busy on a Friday mid-afternoon. Most visitors seemed to be here for the food rather than drinking. From a beer stand point not great.“

“Visited 4/12/2015. I think this pub has changed ownership recently, as the current version of Pints West refers to it being closed and up for sale in September. The exterior looks ancient, in keeping with most of the city of Well. The beer range was St Austell Tribute, Otter Ale and Glastonbury Hedgemonkey. I had the last of these and it was served in good condition. Service was efficient. A solid pub in an area which could do with more of them.“

“A large old pub with plenty of features and nooks and crannies. Nice variety of tables and seats and benches. many of which look like they came from a church! The beer - well there is 3 well hidden casks around the side and to the back of the macro keg lines. There is also a fridge full of foreign bottles. Nothing to get excited about but I did find 3 ticks! All in all a decent place if you are in old Wells.“

“Old, traditional type pub in the centre of Wells. 3 Guest beers were on tap plus an excellent range of foreign bottled beer, some of which you would struggle to find elsewhere“

“Attractive and rangy pub just off the centre of Wells in the old town gaol. Rather a dull range of beers on offer on our visit, the Glastonbury rebadge is Festivale, which has cranberries added. Good reputation for food, all the tables being taken while we were there, but not a pub really worth seeking out for variety in beer, but best in the town.“

“Good spot, in the former city jail. One house beer and a handful of beers from the nearby Glastonbury micro. The food was on the heavy side (had lunch there and didn’t even bother with dinner). Beers were in good condition universally I think.“

“Formerly the city jail, now a free house. No real evidence of it being a jail--it would be nice to have some dungeon kitch but it’s a really comfortable bar/restaurant. Larger than most English pubs. Friendly service and decent but heavy food. When we were there, they have 3 Glastonbury Ales and also a real ale brewed for the town especially by Coors (of all things) and it wasn’t even that bad. Oh, the town of Wells is simply gorgeous and worth visiting!“
