“A visit during February half term with family. Apparently due to Peaky Blinders this place is now very popular and I can testify it was very busy with a big queue to go down the mine. On site you have the Elephant & Castle pub with a nice old style bar and a small sparsely furnished front room. There are 6 hand pulls but they seem to be for show as the usable hand pulls are somewhere hidden under the bar. They just do Bank's Mild and Amber as well as Mann's Brown Ale. That is it beer wise. There is another bar on site that does 'Draft' which I assume is Bank's amber again. A couple of fish and chip shops there and the old style chips cooked in beef dripping were nice. The gift shop does 5 Black Country Ale bottles (all the usual ones). There is a Weston's craft cider which was new to me as well as a 'Black Country Living Museum Ale' from Green Duck. Not sure if this is a re-badged beer as I've not looked into it yet as its sitting in the fridge. So very limited beer wise and my score will reflect that as this is a beer site. In reality though that wasn't the purpose of the visit.“

“This is a popular Beer Festival held normally last weekend of November in the Town Hall at the centre of Dudley. They have tried pre ticketing for the first time this year, with ticket holders getting priority of access to the Festival over non ticket holders, much to their chagrin. However; once inside there is plenty of seating for early starters, due to Covid the main entrance doors were kept open giving an icy blast inside with the early part of storm Arwen hitting the area. There were only a few non arrivals from the beer list, all the beers I had were well kept and served, with lots of staff in attendance. The hall filled up during the afternoon, making it a little cosier. Beer is on sale with vouchers, vouchers could be bought with cash or card. All in all a well run Festival with plenty of interest on the beer front and one to return to.“

“A typical Black Country Ales pub in the centre of Dudley, but this one is now looking rather tired. For once, the walls aren’t painted cream, but have some weird patterned wallpaper. Sports TVs are given more prominence that in other branches of the chain. The beer selection is the expected Black Country beers / ciders / guests, but only about 8 in total here with some blank handpumps. On my latest visit, the place looked fairly empty, but when I came to find somewhere to sit down, almost every table had a least one dubious looking character stat at it ! The toilets are downstairs (like Wetherspoons) and had a somewhat dodgy smell to them. Hard to work up any enthusiasm for this one – I won’t be going again in a hurry. “

“Called in after a day out at Black Country Living Museum nearby. The overall atmosphere is summed up well by others below, but it's a basic pub run by Black Country Inns, whose reach extends throughout the region with numerous pubs that fit the traditional mould well, and thus attract the no nonsense real ale and Carling drinking crowd. Horse racing and cricket on the TV screens, along with a full drinks list. Nothing too exciting but plenty of regional bitters and blondes to satisfy most, plus a Wye Valley stout, alongside 3 Lilleys ciders. Cobs and pork pies are available, as is the law round these parts. Didn't mind it but wouldn't rush to return.“

“This is a Black Country Ales pub in central Dudley, not far from the zoo. It follows the Wellington in central Birmingham in style and does it successfully, although not full on our visit. There is a screen showing the range of beers. Simply the best option in Dudley.“

“This was previously a Banks's pub now with a new lease of life as a Free House and very much smartened up. There is a traditional feel outside which is followed through inside although now bright and clean. The beer range, though free of tie feels a little safe with the whole range being light golden beers on our visit. The keg beers are mostly nationals apart from one pump. Close to The Court House so can be combined with that.“

“Very surprised that this pub was not on RateBeer until now. A classic old school Bathams house, two rooms and a serene atmosphere inside. My pint of bitter was superb, Bathams ales are definitely some of my favourite ones. Worth your time, if you are in the Dudley area.“

“As the name suggests, a pub that was a former courthouse, large and comfortable interior. To be perfectly honest I wasn’t sold on the Black Country Ales, so had one of their guest ales from Yorkshire, very hoppy and refreshing it was too. In an ale desert like Dudley, this is probably your best beer option.“

“Do this chain actually own a less than excellent bar? The usual excellent cask choice, again like sitting in a (very large) front room. The gents toilet is very strange and is obviously converted from a public toilet form when the building was a court house.“

“Reasonably large, fairly busy Spoons. Fairly poor selection, not one of the best.“

“Very similar to the Welly in Birmingham, interior has a bit of a ’spoons feel but the difference here is it’s busy but you get served! Fantastic choice of ales including some never seen before breweries. Makes me want to move back to the Black Country.“

“A typical "Black Country" pub in downtown Dudley. In line with all the other BCA pubs it has a great selection of real ales. Quite large and with lots of wood and carpet. A typical English boozer. Solid "Cloud" wifi and good service. The place to be in Dudley for ale drinkers.“

“Soft furnished in the most familiar style of this chain, this Wetherspoon pub is notable for extending deep beyond its entrance and bar area - as such there’s not shortage of room. It has two rows of local and national real ales to choose from.“

“Just like the Wellington in Birmingham, this is run by Black Country Ales, and it is plain to see the ways in which they are trying to reproduce that success story, e.g. (the Welly’s beer board idea has also popped up here, with beers listed by colour). The range of beers features local micros and a couple of ciders, and on the whole it is hard to pick fault with what this pub is doing. Not the friendliest place in the world, but the pub is a nice old place (a former court house would you believe). Well worth a visit - has the chance to do some great things.“
