Mug House (Bar)
CLAINES LANE

We (me, Loz, Mum and Keith) visited here Saturday afternoon 7th May 2016. I’d been here before but previous visits had been over 25 years ago in my time as an active CAMRA member in the Worcester branch and also with my mum, dad and brother on one of our Sunday evening trips out.

The Mug House is a fascinating place, it is located in Claines a village 3 miles or so north of the city centre which has been all but consumed over the years by the expansion of Worcester. The pub sits behind the the St John the Baptist Church and is once of only two pubs in the entire country to reside on consecrated ground, apparently sharing ground with 15,000 of the long since departed former inhabitants of Claines, no wonder then that the pub is frequently commented on as being haunted.

It wasn’t too busy on our arrival, we parked on the lane adjacent to the pub and walked along the footpath which separates the pub from the graveyard. It was a lit little hazy today but even so if you looked beyond the pub it was easy enough to make out the Malverns in the distance. I understand that the pub dates back over 700 years and I guess at one time the ancient timbers would have been infilled with ’Wattle and Daub’ now it’s a rather drab looking brick. Inside it looks old, four rooms appear to surround a small cube shaped tiny bar, stone floors and a very old mostly untouched original interior makes up for the brickwork outside.

We sat outside with our drinks, the choice of which came from the Marstons and Banks stable, I had a Wychwood Goddess which whilst a beer I would not ordinarily choose was decent enough and in spankingly good nick. I liked it here, it was a quite, rather tranquil and peaceful setting a great historic pub worth the short venture out to.
