“Site of the former Duckstein brewery, now with way better beer. Also a winery and gin distillery but despite a couple of visits I can't comment on that. Excellent friendly service, they'll rummage around for bottles that they may still have from the front shop too. Food was excellent, lots of share plates, good local stuff. Really happy with the beers, and the place is also dog friendly so you can sit on the deck and let them play with the house pooch. Good vibes like most places in this area, highly recommended“

“Good SW option. Plenty of seating options inside or out, always have there solid core beers available, usually 1 or 2 of the wailer series as well. Food has good options for a fussy eater (me). Easily accessible of caves road“

“Great beers - my picks (apart from the seasonal/annual bipa) are the Vienna lager and English special bitter. Food is quite expensive, but of exceptional quality. Flies were out of control, not much you can do about that though.“

“Got there at the end of the day and near closing. Interesting set up as hop vines next to the parking lot. Good views of the area. Had 8 taps, only tried two of them. IPA not that great and piles was very solid. Good pricing and good venue. Bartender had no idea on beers. Good to soak up some sun but bet the place is packed on weekends“

“Out in the wine country middle of wine country. Picturesque with the pond. Not very busy when there but decent service. Had a single one off on tap when there. A single hop pale ale. Disappointing. Otherwise rest of the range is pretty meh. Huge amount of merchandise. A bit on the pricy side but it is Margaret River.“

“Awesome selection of beers with constantly updated bottle fridge and rotating guest taps of the best local and international brews. Couldn’t ask for much more in terms of choice in this part of the world!“

“Decent place in the middle of Aussie wine country, although seemed a tad pricey and beer just average. At least they served up something other than lagers, which rule in SW Australia.“

“One of, if not, the best places in WA to head to for a beer. Amazing view, great beers (always a decent range too) and fantastic food. There isn’t a brewery which comes close in my opinion“

“Oldest local brewery worth visiting. They have started doing more "one offs" to go with a solid group of regular beers. Menu wasn’t the best in the area but still solid. Nice setting, Only downside is that its not the easiest to travel to.“

“Another nice local option, can be a long drive to get there with the average roads & traffic. However once you’ve made it you have a pretty big range of beers with good food. Big playground for kids as well“

“An absolute gold mine in the heart of Dunsborough. Service is quick and efficient and Justin is a lad. Selection is outrageously good for a pub, especially for a pub 3 hours from Perth. So much to choose from. Great local support running on the taps which is nice to see. Awesome lay out. Goes well in Summer and Winter. Must visit“

“Colonial is a superb pub to hit up in between Margaret River and Dunsborough. A cosy inside greets you before an expansive outside area with plenty of tables. Service was fantastic and super friendly the whole time. It helps to know Paul but it was great before he even got there. All the most recent single batches they’ve done were available as well as all there standard beers. You can also get growlers as take away of all of them and they are priced superbly. Food was great. Roast to share between 4 and a few burgers and wings. All tasty and well priced. Really enjoyed going here. Other Colonial owned venues I’ve been too always have a sterile feel to them but this was homely and inviting and I will be coming back“

“Visited during Winter but turned out to be a fine day. You walk in to quite an open area with loads of bar stool type seating with a long bar on your right. Was warm enough to sit outside so did that instead. Nice view of a lake which has a walkway around it. The inside of the place feels a little bit soulless but outside is great on a sunny day. They had their whole range on offer as well as two specialty beers which was good to see. Service was polite and friendly and chatty. Was happy to recommend a beer as well. I would go back here“

“Drove down after my quiet weekend away in Baghdad. The boys down here know their shit. That fuckin’ IPA. Smells like an open wound. Jesus Christ, I’ve just been shot. Ah, just Hans and his little sleepover club. Turn it up. Call in the cavalry with my 2 way and blast the girls brigade out of the bushes. Run away in their little fucking tutu’s. That fuckin’ IPA. Put hairs on your fuckin’ chest, I tell ya.“

“Not sure there is a better place in Australia. This place is purely amazing. Staff are fantastic. Amazing beer coming out from these guys including some great single batches and collabs. Some great wine. A nice open feel leading to an amazing atmosphere. I always dig being able to see through a window into the actual brewery setup. Food is damn good (ribs to die for) and you come away thinking value for money. A must go to brewery“

“Well, the negative out the way first - if you could call it a negative. The entrance to this property and the entrance to the cellar door is not unlike any of the other few dozen down Caves road so at first I wasn’t expecting much. Then you enter and a whole new world opens up. It is rough, misplaced, unfinished and industrial that they were after and achieved. Pass the kitchen on the way through to the long bar with the brewery just noticeable like a tease to the patrons behind. Al fresco opens the place right up letting the warmth and smell of Summer in. Furnished to match it gives the place an involved and lively atmosphere. Exceptional beers on tap, including the Southern Wailer series, and takeaways available. Winery cellar/shop off to one side for those privvy to the grape rather than grain. Menu is simple but a few samples later and it gets the tick of approval. Loved it, now only if they had accommodation!?“

“If I could camp here for the rest of my life, I would. Amazing backdrop to some of the best beers coming out of WA. Food is killer, far superior than the typical pub food you get in Perth. Staff are super friendly and love a good chinwag, definitely worth a checkout!“

“The old Occy’s Brewery is biting off a little more. As Occy’s had to close it’s doors in Busselton, they have decided to take on a more public persona in Dunsborough. Opening at the end of November & evolving into a licensed restaurant/cafe with amazing food that enhances the wonderful Occy’s brews as well as a full bar. Opening 7 days a week from 8am till 10pm & following the Occy’s motto to "Keep it Simple".“

“Visited April 2013, primarily for the food. Very busy on a Friday lunchtime, with the staff working flat out. Pleasant surroundings with a lake and large outside seating area. I tried the wheat beer and cider, which were both fine, and the platter of local produce was tasty. Good.“

“FIrst up on a tour with the ladies at ’Taste of the South’ on a balmy Sunday morning. Literally a tin shed off to the rear of Newtown House - one of the last remaining heritage houses of the area. Enough parking’s available to fill both venues and the beer garden is just enough to give it space and at the same time a friendly, intimacy. Pot bellied stove seems the centre of attention over the long bar nearby. Child friendly with plenty of activity ot keep ’em occupied. Mixture of random bits and bobs through out the interior, a little rough but rustic none the less. The food available from the end of the lawn area is supplied by the folks at Newtown house. Live bands play here often and the Summer sundowners here are apparently legendary. The beer is rustic also. Common styles of Bitter, pale lager, stout, wheat, etc all quite nice drops and suited to the surrounds and patrons alike. A few novelties drinks also, and now a tasty cider too. Visited here on and off for the past six years and stil find it a must on the way south.“

“A little confusing even finding this place deep in the heart of Eagle Bay a few kilometre’s from Dunsborough. No signposts means driving blind until a small sign on the edge of an embankment leads way to the massive, modern looking complex. Parking at the rear sees entry through a tight foyer to the open air and rolling landscape that flows from the building. Kitchen there, cellar there, brewery there, bar right there, everything is accessible and well planned out to give that feel of openness. The food is fantastic, but they have kept it simple and smart. The wine produced here is exceptional from grapes grown on the property. But mostly the beer here is well made, wonderfully crafted and aimed at pleasing the constantly changing faces of the tourists that flock this part. A genuinely ambient place to watch the sun cross the earth and fade out over the trees. Relaxing!“

“A little off the main roads, but it’s easy to find - just follow the signs. A great experiance for me. After having sampled their decent beers from a sampler board, along with some nice tapas, I actually got to meet the head brewer who took me to his hop gardens and let me have 100 grams of the local Pride of Ringwood to use in my home brewing.“

“Came here and tried the sampler. Half of the beers on that plate were instantly forgettable. True to style and all, but just.. unnecessary. The place itself is really nice, set out in the countryside by a pond. You can see in to the brewery were they guys were busy brewing away. Of all the beers I tried only Settlers Pale Ale was worth the trip. But on the other hand, Settlers was friggin amazing!“

“Popped in here near closing time, yet was still warmly received. I shared the tasting tray of all the beers with my wife while our kids played in the playgound. Somewhat rustic setting, but very comfortable with a handful of regulars scattered around for good measure. There is pride and passion in this little start-up operation, and I wish them every success, but they are really going to have to "buff up" their brews if they wish to grow IMHO. I bought a handsome hand-made Occy’s stein.“

“Waited in line for quite a while before i tried to order some beers, the ones i would have like to try weren’t available on tap so got the tasting tray, some of the beers were interesting but hardly worth a second sip and the others were just downright disgusting. Took a few takeaways, they were all drain worthy.“

“I was really impressed with this place. It’s a shiny metal tin shed in the middle of absolute nowhere outside of Margaret River but damn the beers were all fantastic. Particularly impressive were the beers that would usually be boring - the brown ale and Kölsch. All the beers were served in perfect condition, couldn’t have been fresher. The pub itself is a very modern, shiny, typical brewpub affair. Lots of sunlight and a huge outdoor area with a playground. Great for sitting out in the sun for a few beers. Seemed like a very kid-friendly place. Service was of the classic, clueless young-women-with-no-interest-in-beer, brewpub style, but fairly friendly. A pretty odd location for one of Australia’s best breweries. Highly recommended.“

“A place where they have gone out their way to go out of the way is this shack in the middle of no-where. Got lost three times and found it but once in just over two years. Pull up on red clay in the middle of a forest to a quaint little home with no fence and an old Dodge utility parked out front with BSB nicely spray-painted upon its sides. Make our way through a few tables and a billiard table off to the side under the verandah, only to be reassured we are at a brewery by the twelve or so tap handles behind one single bar on the left inside and not that we have entered some rangers house in the middle of a ’reserve’. The young lass behind the bar was a breath of fresh air, full of local wisdom, good for a yarn about life in general, and well-prepped on the beers and ’wine-based girlie drinks’ they have to offer. Merchandise abundant, charm in excess, this was the most unique place - brewery, restaurant, lighthouse (whatever?) - that I have ever seen. Quite twilight zone, Evil dead, Funny farm, across the spectrum - if you can find it it is worth a visit. I recommend sourcing this one out!!!“

“Visited on a very quiet Tuesday morning. The sounds of the nearby woodlands and hobby farms the only evidence of life giving this place a very surreal, back-to-basics feel. The parking bay is bordered by hop vines - growing rampantly -, the only to be grown this far west. the brewery to the left is dainty, a modern rural mix, very well set-out opening out onto an al fresco balcony overlooking what could easily pass as a well-tendered cow paddock. Kiddies playground and picnic benches don this area. A long bar, 5 taps all erupting some very tasty ales and lagers, and excellent down to earth service provided by the head brewer and owner himself, as well as some knowledgeable staff. This place pumps on the weekend, so I was just happy to be here in the quiet of a lazy day to truly soak up the calm ambiance. As bluevegie said, this is well worth a visit.“

“Almost ranch-like in its layout, this is a brewpub built with the family in mind. An excellent playground area for the kids, a huge open eating area, and an interesting art gallery upstairs. The food is absolutely amazing! Out of all the places to stop for beer in Margaret River, I would put this one first on my list.“

“Thanks again to ALLOVATE for posting this fine brewpub. I visited in November 2005 as well. A very modern, open concept kind of place that is architecturally very clean and open looking. Quite spacious, although I agree with ALLOVATE that it can get pretty packed. A terrific line of house brews to try, and something for every palate. The brewmaster was very knowledgable and approachable when I was there, but rumour has it that the baton has been passed and it is under new authority now (I haven’t confirmed this, so I may be starting a rumour!). Anyway, definitely worth going out of your way for when you are down in the valley.“
