“Quite huge - that's the advantage. You can hover between indoor and outdoor tables in iffy weather. The atmosphere is a tad more democratic and less snotty than in a few other places in Bergen - which is beautiful little town, but tends to attract affluent people who buy mediocre paintings.“

64 /100 DORPSSTRAAT 5

We popped into here on Wednesday 28th September 2016,We were cycling from Petten to Alkmaar and this place much like the Cafe/bar - Café d’Alderliefste that we stopped off around the corner was conveniently en-route. This place is located on Dorpsstraat and is just a few doors down from the junction with Kerkstraat. Bergen is a nice little town, we only stopped very briefly here but I think that it is the sort of place that requires further exploration, it was quite a pretty place and looked to have a lot of independent shops such as this. Bergen itself is a small town about 6-7 km to the north west of Alkmaar, I would imagine that it is on a bus route but its easily cycling for those with two wheels.

I have to confess that I never really had much of an explore in here, I thought that it was just an off licence but on second thoughts it may have been more off a deli/off licence, I just saw a few beers in the window, Loz held my bike and I popped in. I spotted the beers straight away, turned immediately right near the counter and there was some shelving with I would say about a hundred or so beers. The choice was pretty decent, there were quite a few small producers, prices were good and I managed to pick up a couple of big hitters (in terms of strength) from Brouwerij De Moersleutel a brewery that I had not heard of, however one that I am told are being talked about and doing well for themselves. This isn’t a destination store but if you were driving/cycling nearby I would certainly recommend stopping off in Bergen and popping in here and also Café d’Alderliefste for an Orval (that’s what I’d have!) which is opposite the church around the corner.

We visited Café d’alderliefste on Wednesday 28th September 2016. I guess that we got here around lunchtime 12:15 ’ish’. We were cycling down to Alkmaar from Petten on the coast, so about 12-13 miles and came through Bergen over three quarters of the way through our ride, we saw Café d’alderliefste and felt obliged to stop for a beer. Bergen is about 7 km north west of Alkmaar, it’s a very pretty little town I must say. Café d’alderliefste is very centrally located on the corner of Breelaan and Karel De Grotelaan and looks across to a red brick church.

The weather was truly marvellous, warm and with blue skies and wispy clouds. We sat outside, there must have been 9 tables and 30-40 seats outside and on a day like today many of these were taken.

There were 7 beers on tap incl: Ciney, Brugs Zot, Jopen, so it looked like three of these were rotating guest taps. There were in excess of twenty bottles, I think that I counted 24-25, there wasn’t anything out of the ordinary but with Orval and Rochefort on offer then I am usually pretty happy, we both settled for the former. etc.

This is a really nice Café the exterior is half white and the bottom half is yellow incl some nice exterior tiles to the floor. It’s a single roomed bar with a wooden floor the bar is straight ahead as you enter, the beer board is up high on the LH side. The one negative was the lady who served us, she didn’t exactly exude friendliness, seeming to not understand my request for two Orvals and then once realising correcting me on my pronouncing and speaking it back as I had said it. Other than this slight gripe, I really liked this place, it was busy and it was a lovely little stop off.
