“Visited in November 2023. Large brewpub in a small township in South NJ. Large interior with two floors, patio, terrace and a central bar in one of the chambers. They have a large food menu, reasonable prices, and 14 beers on tap of which 7 are theirs. Lots of TV screens and country music in the background. Their beers were not that great.“

“Decent little brewpub with solid beers and solid food. Right on the main drag near the train station. Nothing to write home about here, but worth a stop for a bite and a pint.“

“Eclectic brewpub in downtown Woodbridge, NJ. Lots of space including spacious dining area, rooftop seating and cozy bar area. Usual beer choices include a few IPA’s, a selection of British and German styles and the occasional fruited wheat. A couple of dark brews as well. Try the Moon Shot if you like a dank resiny IPA. Good food selections include salads, apps and a wide choice of entrees. Service was decent.“

“This is one of my go-to places for beer. It's clean and nice inside. The service is friendly and get you checked out quickly. The selection is very good. It's not on the level of Joe Canal's. It's good though. Wegmans does a good job with just about everything. The prices are a bit high. I enjoy the tastings they hold there. This is a good spot to get what you need to go.“

“One of the better selections in the area--and a rare chance thanks to the Wegman family "work-around" to enjoy major-chain service and ambiance in NJ--the prices are nonetheless high and the make-your-own-sixer section was practically bare on my last visit. Still somewhere i go often enough to stock up on N. American microbrews for import to the EU“

“Prices for some certainly better than PA restaurants and NYC area. Decent turnover for hoppy stuff. Not the best Wegman’s for beer but decent stop for beer if in the area for a day.“

“Your typical Wegmens. They have a solid buffet of Indian and Asian dishes. Beer selection is what you’d expect. Decent, but nothing special.“

“A surprisingly decent brewpub near the train station in Woodbridge. They serve free chips and salsa (otherwise I didn’t try any other food). The beer was more interesting and tasty than expected - I tried an oak aged cherry chocolate stout and cask IPA which were excellent, and a Belgian ale which was ok. Worth a stop for the beer.“

“Standard brewpub in Woodbridge. Typical brewpub beers. Food is better than average. Friendly staff and service. Nice place as there aren’t a lot of good brewpubs in the area.“

“Nice interior, large square bar with an open balcony overhead. Large attached restaurnt, but pretty empty just after 2 on a Friday afternoon. Six beers and a cask, all were OK. Plentiful parking, and a train out front. Worth a stop.“

“My first place rating as it should be. I grew up in the this place. I love the old brick building. I drove past it daily in my childhood when it was just a carcass, wondering what was in there. Then beer was in there! They have been through a handful of brewers but I think the beer is at a peak. The Rat Pack Pilsner, WHALES IPA, Best Bitter, and Bad Boy Oktoberfest are some of the notables. The hand pump is great. The food is hit or miss. The fajitas are really good and make the bar patrons drool as the come out of the kitchen, sizzling on their way to the dining room. There is always a friendly crowd. Join them!“

“A nice brewpub located across from a train station. The beers are solid and the cask a welcome change. The carrot cake is an old family recipe and worthy of consumption. There is a fair amount of old breweriana throughout the bar area for your loitering pleasure.“

“Decent enough brewpub a little off the beaten track (if that’s possile in NJ...LOL!). The place is in a really nice old brick building...the wood floors are especially nice. The food is pretty good for a brewpub. If anything the beers could be better. Don’t get me wrong...as I said...they’re decent enough...and worth a visit...just not great. You’ll enjoy them...but you won’t remember them the next day.“

“Parking is decently easy to come by hear given the proximity to the train, and at $3 for the day I guess isn’t so bad, especially if you plan on staying more than a couple hours. Inside there’s a lot of nice open exposed brickwork on the walls and by the bar it goes up to a second level providing some natural light. Bar crowd here is interesting. Lots of locals, and a good amount of mixed drinks on the bar around me, even before five on a Thursday. Interestingly, they have free food (up to $13) in the dining room if it’s your birthday, and it was my birthday when I was here, but I didn’t feel like relocating (or mentioning that it was my birthday). But good to know for the rest of you I’m quite sure. Looks like they may have a fairly standard list of beers. When I was here they featured a wheat beer, golden, amber, IPA, dunkel-weizen, stout, and a fruit wheat. Sampler of all seven was $10. The beers were a tiny bit above the curve for the standard brewpub beers, but nothing blew me away. Free chips and salsa however – thass nice. Mmhmm. Not sure why, but my pint of IPA after my sampler was a scant $2.50. Happy hour perhaps? Certainly ups the value quotient.“

“The big news here is the Chris Sheehan is the new Head Brewer - this is the guy that brewed such good beer at Chesea in NYC and especially at Port 44 Brewpub in Newark, NJ. Chris’s beers are just starting to appear now, today I had the Pumpkin Ale and it was stellar. Otherwise, this place is about 15 feet from the NJ Transit train station, great old building with the fermentation tanks right in front of you when you arrive. Staff is friendly and attentive, brick walls and old railroad pictures and railroad artifacts abound and complete the scene. Beers are well-poured and fresh; food was very good. I had the chicken cheese steak and fries, hot and delicious albeit a bit pricey for those tavern fare items since the fries are extra. Great experience, as long as Chris is there, I’ll be back!“

“Went during the afternoon, so it wasn’t too crowded. Free tortilla chips and pizza during happy hour, that’s always a plus. Sampler was $9, and the cask ale was $2.50 (I think it was a special happy hour price.) They also have one of those trivia tvs and a train that goes around the ceiling.“

“Beautiful old building located right next to a train station. Lots of brick with an open building plan. It’s really cool to look up from the bar and see the kettle. Nice square bar area which is good for conversation. I visited on Sunday night which apparently is karaoke night. Yes even in new jersey they sing Garth Brooks songs. They only had 6 beers on tap and 1 on cask. They also had a full bar and one of those goldschlager/rumple mints machines for shots so they cater to a younger crowd. The bartender was nice but didn’t demonstrate any beer knowledge. They had a barleywine on cask which i quite enjoyed and a bargain at 4.50. A lot of their beers seemed to replicate bmc product which I wasn’t feeling. Great atmosphere but if I go back I’m sticking to what’s on cask.“

“I was in the area for work and this was a nice stop for dinner. I came on a weekday so it wasn’t crowded at all. I sat at the bar and got good service for both food and drinks. The list of beers wasn’t terribly inspired but the pale ale was a solid offering. Food was good. Cool old building right next to the train station. Definitely worth a stop if you are nearby.“

“I visited the JJ after watching a good ol’ fashioned UConn whooping over Rutgets at the RAC. Upon sitting down I noticed that the walls are bordered by a model toy train track with a tiny little model train chugging around the dining room. I kinda wished that each individual table to feel the rumble of the toy train - be it with pneumatic shocks underneath each table, or what have you. The waitresses are very attractive. The beer is pretty good. Plenty of parking. The food I had, wings and a chicken enchilada was pretty darn tasty. This place doesn’t compare to my own golden standard - the Willimantic Brewery (mainly because the beer is SO GOOD and they are always rotating thus always wanting to make me visit at least once a week) - but this is a nice place to visit if I ever have another reason to be in Woodbridge, NJ.“

“Cool old building super high roof in bar area, brick nice wood square bar, cask ale on offer. Offer a little single malt selection as well. Copper brewing equipment in center of dining area, cozy feeling place. Single server at bar seemed a little overwhelmed at 1 20 on a Tuesday. Menu had some good looking items, I chose the grilled shrimp BLT. Pretty solid, nice lemon butter, shrimp need more grilled flavor. Sweet potato fries with roasted jalapenos and grilled onion were great. “

“Sometimes the selection isn’t the greatest, but all you really need is one beer to lock in on and you are set. Love this place. Great look for a brew pub, but unfortunately the help left something to be desired. Ah well, excellent beer makes up for it.“

“Truly one of the great beer places on the east coast. The brick building is the first sign that you’re going to find something classically great here, the menu has great choices (don’t you dare miss the beer-battered onion rings!) and the service is top notch. Our waitress, Nicole, kept the beer coming, and got the food to the table nice and hot. The beers taste great, and the ambiance is stunning. Real wood tables, great decor, and don’t miss the train circling around the place! Looking forward to my next visit!“

“a really nice building- brick on both the outside and inside. Beer selection was not too exciting when I was there, and the quality was average for a brewpub. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to stop in again when they have one of their WHALES beers on. Staff was rather unattentive at first but got better during my visit.“

“A fantastic building with a strong train station historical background that is used to make the place quite charming inside. A small electric train circulates all over the building, at what must be a 15-foot height. If you want to eat, the menu offers an above average selection for a pub, at reasonable prices. Solidly brewed beers, authentic examples of their respective styles and all wearing a healthy foam, in good conditions, but the basic beers are not overly exciting. Try to come when interesting seasonals are on or you may be disappointed. We were not at the bar, but the service was satisfying, if not impressive nor particularly enthusiast about the beers. A great place to visit once, but I doubt I’d want to come back unless a special beer is on.“

“I discovered this brewpub (probably like many others), by passing by on the left side of the train to the Jersey shore. Right next to RR station (bonus). Met up with some local friends. Brewmaster August gave a brief tour for us (thanks!). Very nice brick interior with a lot of open and bright space, with the fermenting tanks in the middle of the room. I loved the little train running around the ceiling! Food is decent pub fare which is very nicely priced (compared to NYC). Beers available seemed pretty much "by the book" in terms of style and quality, but still fairly good overall. Worth a trip if you’re in the area.“

“Good food at fair prices. Selection of beer was good, as well. They had six on tap when I was there. Tried the Garden State IPA which was worth having a second pint of. Service was excellent. Our waitress (and hostess) trekked up and down flights of steps all night long just making sure we were being well taken care of. Ambiance is cool.........a big old brick building that used to be a coal yard, with a deck that overlooks the North Jersey Coast NJ Transit commuter line. Enjoyable place. Not really sure why this place has gotten a few bad reviews?“

“3. You cant drink your growler at the table... yes, this may be illegal, but we got yelled at only when the owner stopped by... now... problem is, waitress knew we had growlers, she got them for us! But, she said it was OK to drink it as she also gave us an empty pint glass so we didnt have to drink straight from the growler. 4. If service is horrible and you dont tip the waiter... he will run after you in the nearby quickcheck and demand a tip... I am not making this up... this really happened. 5. Owner argued with me that the reason why he does #2 listed above... that is.. why he lies is that otherwise he would not be in business. Hmmm, GreenRock in Hoboken has $1 pints for 3 hours... 5 - 8PM every day, even Friday, and they dont go out of business... while paying Hoboken rent!!! So yea, if you know of a better brew pub in your area... DO NOT GO HERE!!! “

“Worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood. I have noticed that the beers have improved since my last visit. New brewer maybe? Bar is very noisy, so if you want conversation, get a table. Food is typical pub fare...nothing great. The beers are clean and a tad above average.Although the double IPA was very good. I had a second. Plus the train runs right next door. $2 pints during happy hour... hell yeah!“

“Good atmosphere and excellent happy hour. Pleasant crowd of locals. Beer is served ice cold and the condition of the brews is spotty. But when the beer is fresh it is usually worth a try. Menu is extensive and reasonably priced; the food is good. The service staff doesn’t know their beer at all. Train station is one block away making this a favorite spot for me to get to and from easily and safely.“

“Don’t stop here unless you’re in town. The beer was average at best, none of the selection thrilled me. For a brewpub, there were too many small children who were noisy and distracting. The second floor looks over the bar and kids were throwing toys over the railing into the bar area. I ain’t gonna return.“

“Been going here since it first opened to check out the brews. The latest brewer, August Lightfoot, keeps the beers interesting and is looking to brew the occasional rare big brew and add them to the lineup. Food is usually decent, and August makes outstanding lagers. Keep an eye out for the IIPA on the hand pump, one of his best yet!!!“

“J.J. Bitting is located off Main Street in Woodbridge. It was quite a few miles (a couple through construction) from the Raritan Center where I was staying. Parking was a little confusing. There is street parking, but the lot right next door looked like it was all reserved. I didn’t want to take any chances.

I really liked the atmosphere here, but there were some annoying aspects as well. When you enter there is a nice glass-enclosed look at the brewing equipment, as well as some bags (malt?) to send you in the right direction. The bar was square and there were TVs to watch. Lots of brick made it pleasing to the eye. There was also a toy train chugging its way around near the ceiling. The less appealing aspects mainly had to do with the crowd, which was loud and somehow managed to drown out the Springsteen that was blasting on the speakers, which was no small accomplishment.

Bitting’s has a $7 sampler of all the beers in rotation. Overall the beers were above average they even had a Scottish ale which I always appreciate.

The bartender was pleasant enough and seemed to know the beers pretty well.

I didn’t try any food, but what I saw passing by looked pretty good.“
