82 /100 1713 SAX-BETH CHURCH ROAD For a place that’s in the middle of nowhere, Haw River was really jumping. It’s located on the far side of what used to be a rather large mill complex with a couple of restaurants, a butcher, a large pub, a charter school, and condos. This place is on the side the pub is on. It’s hard to find during the day, but at night that have a small water tower that lights up HAW RIVER which is pretty cool. The mill setting gives the place a rustic charm which this state seems to have more of these places per capita than any other state in the union. As the name indicates, they do a lot of saisons and other Belgian styles. The saisons are clearly the standouts and I enjoyed most of them very much. |
38 /100 1713 SAX-BETH CHURCH ROAD As others have said this place is quite a chore to find. Its in a huge complex of buildings that was once a giant factory. There are apartments, a restaurant, a butcher shop, junk store, gas station, and all sorts of other little places all tucked in here. Even a full on sound stage. Everything is definitely priced up into full on tourist price level. Way out of line for the area. The brewery is down in the basement in one tiny little room. Very small. Really too small. Only accessible by a narrow walkway to what looks to be a very old service entrance. No sign anywhere, except a small hand written chalk board. This is a giant factory, it looks like there would be plenty of space available. Anyway, last time I was here I walked in and nobody said a word. Then I found out they were closed. WTF?? If your closed, lock the door, and at least tell someone. That was my last visit. I will not return. |
84 /100 1713 SAX-BETH CHURCH ROAD The building itself was easy enough to find, in a sort of condo building between the way overpriced gas station and the river. The brewery itself was harder - I went into both the restaurant and the coffee shop first. Brewery is entered through the very bottom of the building. It’s just a tiny taproom with a few stools and a swag counter, on the front of a production facility. Staff was great. Beers were of course very solid, available in flights of four, full pours, or half a dozen or so bottles. No food. Newgrass staff were there when I stopped by. Great place. |
72 /100 The Eddy Pub & Restaurant (Restaurant) 1715 SAXAPAHAW-BETHLEHEM CHURCH RD Food is fairly good. The tap selection is not terribly expansive, but there will be a few good beers, maybe a mead, and probably something from Haw River. Haw River is right next door and allows you to bring food from the Eddy down there. If you’re mainly looking to drink, I’d follow that route. |
88 /100 1713 SAX-BETH CHURCH ROAD They are making fantastic belgian-inspired beers. Quality has ranged from well-executed to fantastic. Beautiful small indoor space with plenty of outdoor seating as well. Growlers and flights are available. All staff I’ve interacted with have been approachable and well-versed in the beers. A top-notch brewery in NC that is worth the visit! |

They specialize in farmhouse ales and make a wide range of unique styles from gratzer, spelt saison, session hoppy ales, barrel aged strong ales, and more. Impressive portfolio with almost everything tasting top notch. Flavor combinations are novel and well executed. Samplers are served in labeled custom trays made from tree rings. Bar seating and also outdoor patio seating. Great way to enjoy some exotic, yummy beer outdoors. Ambiance is unbeatable. Worth the drive out here for sure. |

Stop in here for good sandwiches and perhaps grab a six pack of US craft beer or NC local beer. Selection is limited to about 90 different bottles, but all are refrigerated. Some special edition singles. Good stop to know, but not a critical beer place. |
92 /100 1713 SAX-BETH CHURCH ROAD very cool spot well off the beaten path. in an old cotton mill that’s undergone some major renovations. beers were exceptional. if you’re into sours or belgian-influenced beers, this is well worth the visit. highly recommended. |
64 /100 Saxapahaw General Store (Beer Store) 1735 SAXAPAHAW-BETHLEHEM CHURCH RD I bumped the selection and overall rating up a bit just because of the location of this place. I visited the quaint, trendy town of Saxapahaw for the first time in several years. I intended to get lunch at the great general store...I did not expect to leave lunch with bottles of 4 Calling Birds, Sculpin, and Wilco Tango Foxtrot. 5 swing door coolers of beer is all they have, but the selection is great and the prices are not inflated because of the town’s relative isolation. It’s well-curated too, and though i didn’t ask for or need help, the posted staff picks indicated that at least a few of the employees know their beer. Kind of a snooty, more organic-than-thou atmosphere overall, but it comes with the territory. It’s a pretty good destination, because the cafe serves delicious locally-sourced food and the store has a collection of very nice wines, cheese, gourmet sodas, local meats & dairy, etc. |
