“An ugly building in a beautiful spot. The parking lot is filled with beachgoers and massive trucks that take up two spaces. Luckily there is a public parking lot just two blocks away, free, as far as I know. Inside is a huge long bart and some booths plus a second room with some restaurant tables. The patio is small but has an amazing view of sand dunes, the beach and a big rock. Tons of beer on tap, and flights are pre-set and can't be changed - and consist of eight beers, holy cow! Beers are just OK. Food is elevated pub grub at inflated prices. Service was mostly indifferent. If I had it to do over again I'd eat somewhere else, walk the beach, and get out of Dodge.“

“This one is kind of hard to rate. Iconic views from the patio, you could sit there for hours enjoy the sun, ocean, sunset. Very calming and just beautiful. The inside is not that charming. Main room was somewhat empty, but we had to stand at the bar because wedding reception was about to be held there. We were offered a table by the restroom and that part of the establishment seemed soulless. However we were moved into a large side room which wasn't too atmospheric either. Ambiance is 5 for the patio and 2/3 for the inside. They had 16 beers on tap, mostly focused on the hoppy stuff. Quality was good at best, mostly OKish. Food was not that good. I'm glad we've visited, not sure I'd come back except for the views.“

“Very scenic place on the beach near a large rocky islet and very large dunes. Outdoor patio is super scenic. I’d call to reserve in advance though, as this place was a 45-minute wait for a table when I was in. And for some reason, they bumped me off their list at the last minute, so it became 55-minute wait. Beer was mostly average. They do a set flight, luckily I hadn’t tried anything before from these guys. Nothing super standout.“

“Just an idyllic location, right on the beach with beautiful views from pretty much anywhere in the large space...look up pictures, it's even better in person. The beer is solid, all well done and inoffensive, but nothing so amazing you must come back for it. The styles are all across the board for clean beers though, so you can find something for everyone. The food was pretty spectacular too, seafood and upscale pub grub. A little pricey, but I'm sure everything in the tourist town is. An awesome stop.“

“As others have said, this is going to be hands down the most beautiful brewpub view you'll ever have. Just a stunning view of a beautiful stretch of Pacific coast along with a volcanic plug (google it, it's awesome) jutting out of the water just off the beach you are directly on. I was there during the end of the reach the beach bike race. Bit of a zoo but service was prompt and very good. The beer itself is just decent. You go here for the beautiful views - the beer is acceptable but not worth going out of your way for (the views on the other hand ...)“

“A must for an Oregon Coast visit. Not your typical Oregon beachside restaurant. Wonderful spectrum of house brewed beers, and their food is equally on par to compliment.“

“I’ll reaffirm that Pelican’s located in a perfect spot along a beautiful stretch of the Oregon coast. The sunset views from the front of the brewpub are legitimately stunning. The location alone makes Pelican a worthy stop. Beer-wise, Pelican offers a marginally above average experience. The dozen or so taps offered mostly widely-distributed, easy-to-find beer. Tickers shouldn’t expect to find a wealth of new beers. The Belgian pale was the standout of a ho-hum bunch. I’m not really sure where Pelican really excels as a brewery, as they seem to competently brew a very wide range of styles, which isn’t a bad thing by any means. Food’s relatively cheap and served in large portions. Overall, this is a pretty solid spot that I’d recommend to anyone considering a visit to the coast, not least because of the views. Worth a detour.“

“The location of this brewpub is probably the best I’ve ever seen. The staff was super friendly and gave us a table by the windows to the sea, outstanding view. The food was OK but kind of pricy and the beers are overallt OK as well.“

“Really busy on a friday night, but the scenery was so nice I didnt mind waiting. Great place to come during a Portland heat wave; it was about 40 degrees cooler than the city today. Beautiful views of the rock with a little fog rolling in. Nice beachfront as well. Outdoor patio looked nice enough, but it was in fact a bit chilly. Inside has two main rooms and a side room that appears to be more for events, but that is where I was seated. Waitress was incredibly friendly and helpful; I think she was sorry for me for being alone at dinner on a Friday :). Anyway, service was great. Food was so so, and my Cascadian Dark Lager was also so so, but I know from experience that they have some winners in their beer lineup. All in all a great place to visit, just take care when ordering your food.“

“La localité est paradisiaque, rien de moins, mais je m’explique mal comment ça se fait qu’il n’y avait pas de terrasse. En attendant notre table on est allé boire nos pintes sur le bord de la plage pour oublier ce non-sens. La bouffe est moyenne, les bières sont peu spectaculaires ou audacieuses mais bien exécutées. L’ensemble vaut vraiment la peine.“

“What a location! Plus if you’re staying over the street you can charge everything to your room. Treat yo’self. Pelican beer selection, good if a little spendy food. It was cold as the arctic in there but the view is great.“

“WOW. One of the most stunning locations for a brewpub anywhere. It was a cool and foggy day and we still sat outside because it’s simply mind-blowing. The sand dune cliff, the offshore rock. Admittedly the geographic location IS the atmosphere. The interior is nothing special. However, service was very good. The beers are not necessarily exciting, but the stout in particular is excellent. Food was better than expected.“

And they have a good selection of beers.I always thought the food was good, but this last time, a couple days ago, it was excellent. Go out of your way to visit.“

“You can get a more stunning location and large spacious bar. Worth the visit even if you are not a fan. Service was efficient, but they were much to busy to really spend time with you. I don’t fault them for this as they had a 2 hour wait and and they had tons of staff, it is just too popular. I was there for a brewers dinner and the food was pretty good but pricey. A must if you can, the location cant be beat.“

“Larger, family style brewpub with a great view of the sea stacks on the OR coast. Really beautiful inn across the street if you are staying in Pacific City. 30-40 min wait when we were there on a Sunday night; pretty impressive. Food is a bit pricey and the menu is a tad outdated. Seafood options were limited and sandwiches and pizzas did not have any unifying theme. Marinara sauce served with rockfish was very strange. But everything was eaten and enjoyed. For beer, you can get a flight of everything they have on tap; and the beer quality is high. They excel at fringe styles like cream ale, brown ale, foreign stout. They brew to GABF guidelines so win a lot of awards and showcase clean palates and mild hop bitterness. Impressive list. Service was very friendly and the beer/food came out quickly. Now beware that in the men’s restroom the toilets spray water all over the place so be very careful.“

“Was doing a road trip along the Oregon coast with family and one of the stops on the itinerary was Pacific City. I wasn’t sure if we would be anywhere near Pelican, but ended up following the crew to a beach parking lot that was right next to Pelican. I really couldn’t believe my luck. I was able to sneak over for a couple beers, but the highlight of this place is the amazing location. Giving this only a 5 on Ambiance is an injustice. Pelican sits right on the beach with just an amazing view and a huge patio. Easily the best craft beer location I have visited to date. Service was solid and the selection was decent. There was a sampler tray, but I didn’t have time to sit and rate the 8 or so on tap. Maybe next time I am here.“

“Beautiful location. Friendly staff throughout, but it took quite a while to get a drink order sitting at the bar. It's quite busy there, and seems to be the 1 place all tourists stop at. Once my food came, the bartender was asking the couple next to me if they'd like certain items (side condiments, glasses of water, optional sides, etc.) that weren't offered for myself. Odd. But, friendliness was still apparent. I ordered the fish & chips and 2 of the 3 pieces were overcooked. Good 'slaw and chips though. Great tasting beer, but out of 10 taps, 4 are seasonals and sell out quick. Staple beers are excellent, however. The prices are some of the highest I've seen in Oregon to date, but pretty much what I'd be paying in Canada for similar foods, and equally great craft beer. Good place, but I guess I expected more all around?“

“So I’m from the east coast...taking my first craft beer drive up the Oregon coast...stopping in dozens of little towns and taking every beachside/clifftop loop road I can. Well after awhile you start to skip a few loop roads...as you start to get tired and they begin to all look the same. So it’s late in the day and I’m about to pass this one loop road when I see a sign that says "Pacific City"...well for no other reason than growing up near Atlantic City...I take the road. A short time later I come around a bend...see a great beach...a sea stack...a dune people are sliding down...so I park near the beach and start taking pictures. As I start to get back into my car I notice the parking lot is for a restaurant...as I walk over just to use the facilities...I notice to my amazement I’m looking at a brewpub. Well we ate...we drank...we were definitely impressed. Even more at the quality of the beers than the location and views as great as they were. To this day my travel partner does not believe I stumbled across this place by dumb luck! (of course for every hidden treasure tripped over...I’d hate to think how many treasures I missed over the years...fortunately not the Pelican!)“

“My wife and I came here after Portland on our 3-month road trip. One of my bucket list places. It’s right on the beach, to the point where they may have to worry about erosion someday soon. The entry has a gift shop and coolers of to-go beer. The pub is big but cozy and warm, wood lined with low ceilings. We got a table facing the ocean and Haystack. The waitress was attentive and friendly. There were 9 beers on, and a sampler features 8 for $6. Great deal. Tsunami Stout is on permanently- yes. Food was pricier but tasty. Incredible atmosphere, great people, solid beer. Visit here if you get a chance.“

“August visit. Stopped in here after another long day traveling with still some driving to go, so would have liked to relax here a little more. Even so, I got to enjoy it more fully my last visit to OR, so this was my mom’s turn. Was packed, but still got a spot at the bar and speedy service. Selection of their own brews. Prices seemed average. Yay! beach. Happened to make sunset last time (very nice).“

“Good quality food. Big place for being in the middle of nowhere. I can only assume an excellent view as it was pitch black that night. Could see the haystack in the distance and 10 ft. white caps. Beer on tap was really good. Service was slightly above average. I’d go back if it wasn’t in the middle of nowhere. I’d definitely go during the day, however. A couple taps were spent, :(.“

“The main attraction of Pelican is that it’s on the beach. Sitting on the patio drinking a beer there is one of my favorite things ever. The food is good, but over priced, along with the beer. Definitely worth the trip, they have a few beer gems and the experience alone is worth it.“

“OK, the view from the Pelican is what they are charging for. This place is crankin’ in the tourist $$$. Their beer is decent and their food is good except both are way over priced. Be ready to drop some dough if you plan on hanging out here to drink. Beers were $5.50-$6 and it seemed the staff there were uninformed about the pricing. I asked 3 different wait staff about the price of a pint and all 3 sort of bumbled through a bout of um....uh...well...um...lemmie check...before I got the answer. The 22oz bombers they were selling in the lobby were cheaper then what they had on tap. Also, it does not say on the menu what a regular or tall beer cost because I am sure they would sell less beer. The amount of reading material you get when you sit down is impressive so they have nailed the marketing aspect of a brewery and their list of awards is impressive but I didn’t think it came across in the beer so much. Maybe I expected to be blown away by something that costs $6/pint. Granted, this is one of the only watering holes in this part of the coast but still... Again, you are paying for the view here.“

“Wow, what a beautiful setting, right on the beach of Cape Kiwanda. Inside is very nice, you walk into a store area then on the bar with seating in the bar and beyond. Had great service from the bartender with some free tasters, and good info about the beer. Good selection of all the regular Pelican beers with some nice seasonals as well. Value was average on beer, didn’t eat any food. Got some great beer to go from the store, they had the regulars as well as some Grand Cru, Stormwatchers, Wee Heavy, and a few other limited beers. Great place and will go out of my way to go back here.“

“2010-06. Visited on a quiet Monday afternoon last June, this is one of the most scenic brewpubs you could hope for! With windows around the room, you can enjoy the gorgeous view of the beach while you sip your samplers of tasty beverages and eat delicious crab cakes and fresh clam chowder. Our server was extremely friendly and helpful, as were the other staff at the door. Light rock music serenaded our meal. We tried eight of their own on tap and took away some bottles for later, most were pretty solid. Would return here to go back to the beach!“

“I can’t imagine that any brewpub in the country has a better view. Right on the beach. Admire the surfers and the giant rock. We stopped in for breakfast and beer samplers. Between swigs of coffee. People were walking past me and laughing. Only later did I realize that I was wearing my Schlafly "beer is not just for breakfast anymore" T-shirt. Go away! Quasi-alcoholic geekery in progress! Nothing to see here! Found the beers to be nice but overcarbonated. I know they’re big award-winners, but I’d come just for the coffee, eggs and view.“

“(Visited 02/2010): Finally got to visit this place after hearing rave reviews and trying a few of their bottled beers. Pelican is located right near the ocean (at least by looking at the map, it was dark when we visited) not too far off the 101 on Kiwanda. They have a decent sized lot out front. The outside is appealing to the beer-lover’s eye with a large tank and windows allowing a view of some of the brewing equipment. The interior opens into a gift shop that sells bottles and clothing along with other goodies. Beyond that is the restaurant and bar. The bar wraps around with table seating the whole way. There are also separate banquet rooms. The brewing area is again visible from the bar and is pretty impressive in scale. A chalkboard above the bar reveals what brews are available. They also offer a 7-beer sampler. As for the beers, they are just as good at the brewpub as what I have tried in the past. There are around 8 taps and they range from lighter fare like the Kiwanda Cream Ale and Bière de Garde to the Tsunami Stout. There are one or two seasonals such as the Bridal Ale as well. All of the beers are high quality. Service on a weekday evening was very good. We sat at the bar and the bartender was punctual and knowledgeable about the beers. It’s hard to avoid seafood in a place like this, but as we had been eating and drinking beer the whole day all we could manage was a split appetizer of spinach/artichoke dip. It was very good though. Overall this place is awesome and well worth the drive from Portland. “

“A beautiful spot to try some classic Oregon and PacNW-style beers. If you’re there in the Spring, the Riptide Red is not to be missed. The Tsunami Stout was worth a 2-hour drive from Portland once a month in the winter for me. Also the food is excellent.“

“Very nice brewpub on the Oregon coast – great view of the Pacific Ocean and, depending on the weather, surfers. The last time we were there (May 2010), we even saw a whale surface. The food is pretty good – the service is above average and usually very good when sitting at the bar. The bartender we visited with was very knowledgeable of the various brews offered.“

“2010-06. Have been wanting to go here for ages, ever since I saw a gorgeous photo online. It did not disappoint despite crappy overcast weather. We sat inside for a quiet lunch, it was picking up as we left. Service was very friendly. We tried a sampler, some amazing clam chowder (no really, very thick and rick. Yumm!) and some just okay crab cakes. The beer is all very good, but only a few are great. Main menu looked good as well. Walked the beach afterwards. Well worth the drive before heading up the coast.“

“It was great to finally make it to Pelican, and it didn’t disappoint. I just wish that had a lot more beer of theirs available. Alls they had on tap were there regular line, and two seasonals. But great selection of merch, and lots of beer to go. The service was friendly and welcoming, which i awesome since they probably deal with a lot of annoying tourists. It was a little pricey, they are totally taking advantage of the tourist situation. I paid $20 for a filled 32oz flip-top bottle to go. YIKES!“

“right on the oregon coast. great view! waitress was a cute 16 year old, but didn’t seem to know anything about beer. gf thought clam chowder was mediocre. i liked the blackened chicken, bacon, avocado sandwich, though it was a bit bready. worth going for the view if nearby. sampler lacked a lot of their special seasonal beers, which i would have liked to try without buying $15 bottles.“

“Absolutely stunning location for a brewpub. Beautiful beach, awesome views, perhaps the only nicer spot we’ve been to was Matso’s Broomw Brewery on gorgeous Roebuck Bay in Western Australia. Interior is stylized toward "classic English" style, with lots of dark hardwood. The food was awesome (I had mahi mahi tacos and my wife had a tuna fillet sandwhich), and the beers were terrific too. The staff went out of their way to help us feel comfortable. We came back for a second visit!“

“I accidentally stumbled upon this place while looking for Bob Straub State Park, and wow. Really wow. I ordered a Wee Heavy and joined some others sitting on the sand dunes outside the pub. Gorgeous view of the ocean (we saw whales!), really friendly waitstaff and clientele. The place was a bit crowded for those who might want to sit inside, but the obvious thing to do here is get your beer from the bar and go sit outside... take off your shoes and put your toes in the sand. The beer was great - later I got the mahi tacos which were also delicious. Some might say this place is pricey, but it’s really one of a kind, absolutely worth every penny and more. Go at sunset, you won’t regret it.“

“Pelican is a shining oasis of deliciousness in a rather boring, somewhat dumpy town. Their beers are all of good quality - they even have some on cask. “Classy, classy, classy. Gorgeous location, gorgeous sunset over the ocean while sitting outside with an ale and delicious food. Friendly waiter. So this is usually the setup for mediocre beer, right? Well, not this time. The beer is what we came for on our 3 state brewery tour road trip, and this was some of the best beer we experienced. The icing on the cake was the generosity of the brewer who provided us an impromptu brewery tour when we introduced ourselves as home brewers. Classy.“
