Goleta Beer Guide: Your Goleta guide to beer, beer bars, breweries and brewpubs

“Draughtsmen is in an industrial area at the end of a cul-de-sac. Street parking available, although I can imagine it getting challenging at peak times. This actual place is open and airy, bar situated in the center of the action. Monday afternoon was locals time, I think I was the only person there who was not a regular. No flights, but they offer samples for 2-3$, which seems to be the norm for the area. I was trying to conserve my sobriety so I only tried two, but both were solid, and the session IPA was quite good. No food available, did not ask about food trucks. Love the name. Place to watch.“

“HBC is a classic strip mall brew pub, from the location to the decor. You know exactly what this looks like already if you are at all into beer. Of course parking is not an issue. Not busy on a Monday afternoon, a few regulars. I took a seat at the bar and ordered a flight of six. Service was solid; despite me being the only person the bartender did not know, I still got prompt attention. Beer quality was not so great, but there was a pretty solid IPA in the mix, so its not a total loss.“

“Brewery in a warehouse area in Goleta; just follow the beer signs when you are close and you will get there. Parking is no problem at all. Interesting warehouse space with a good amount of outdoor seating and a wide open interior. Typically there are food trucks outside, but not for lunch on a Monday, although they did have pizza available by the slice. Good number of taps available. No flights offered, but everything is available in sample pours for $3. The saisons I tried were not good at all, but the others seemed OK.“

“My GPS took me on kind of a weird way to get here, but it’s basically in an industrial park that’s sort of kitty-corner to the shopping center where Hollister is, but all the way in the back.

They have a nice setup here with plenty of parking, some games like cornhole, and a nice patio area. Pretty good sized tasting room inside as well with high ceilings and plenty of space to sit at the bar as well as some other tables.

Service was initially a bit slow, but was otherwise fine. They had a bunch of beers but I settled on a flight of four. The IPA and "Saison" were probably the winners of the group.

Seems like a place that’s got a good bit of capital behind it and they seemed to have some potential, though not a good bit of consistency. May stop in depending on how things go the next time I’m driving up/down 101. I still need to hit Captain Fatty’s...“

“Hands down best beer place in Goleta/Santa Barbara. Easy to get to with a car but not really by bus. Staff is so friendly and the beer is great. Great happy hour and daily specials, Monday pint night, Saturday growler for so cheap! Food is also pretty good, love the taquitos! Blonde lady working at the bar is the best and most friendly bartender she always remembers me and my friends and treats us so well!“

“Visited December 20, 2014.

This place only opened about a month ago and they seem to be doing OK for a tiny brewery. It’s another warehouse brewery operating on a homebrew system. I talked with the brewer a bit about their plans because I’m always curious what the business plan is for a place that has to pay employees to pour 1 keg of beer that took probably 8 hours of labor to make. It doesn’t make any sense to me. These guys at least have a plan. The three owners are not paying themselves anything and putting all the money towards a 10 bbl system. At that point they’ll get a proper chilling system too (yes, they’re doing the plastic fermenters in the fridge thing right now). They want to get a canning line too. I guess they’re looking for investors for all this as they think it’s going to cost about 250k. At least they have some understanding of scaling the business up. We’ll see if they get there or not. Right now the beers aren’t great. Not necessarily bad but not very good either. They were all astringent and the IPA is really malty. Meh.

Inside they’ve got a nice set up. They have some tables, a tv, and some games. Naturally there is plenty of merchandise to purchase. They’re in a quiet industrial complex next door to a CHP office. All around a kind of forgettable place. That said I’m sure I’ll be back at some point since it’s right up the way from Hollister.“

“Ok so I gather this is not that unusual in the US but for me this is more about drinking craft beer from a restaurant in a corner of a massive car park of a shopping centre. Funny thing is the product is pretty good! The beer is decent, the food is at least good and it all kinda hangs together. 6 sampler flight at $7 is excellent value; other beers run at $5 to $7. Beers good but not great.“

“Kind of hidden in a strip mall a couple blocks from the freeway, this BevMo is just like all the others. Typical selection, below average beer knowledge from the staff and average prices.“

“Located in a shopping mall complex. Patio seating, partly sunny, partly shaded. Umbrellas can be opened over each table that is in the sun. The inside is characterized by a flat black, concrete floor with a larger dining area than bar area. Wait staff seemed a bit discombobulated. It was busy, but not full. I’m not eating, but as I look around, the fare seems more among the pub food variety. A decent selection of brews. Full bar available too. Not a bad place, just not very good either.“

“Big restaurant/brewpub located in a shopping center right off the freeway. They are constantly releasing new beers which is cool and they are usually decent. The food looks really appealing on the menu but is usually pretty poorly made. Service from the waitresses in the restaurant is usually below average and their beer knowledge is a non-existent, however the bartenders are much better“

“Visited March 17, 2013 after stopping in at Hollister, which is in the same shopping center.

Usual Bevmo selection but lacking the local presence. I saw some Tap It and dinner Figueroa Mountain but not much else side from Firestone. Did see stone Green Flash but I guess they’re everywhere these days.

Didn’t interact with the service but the place was nice. Didn’t see anything particularly inspiring but since I do stop in at Hollister a couple times a year I’ll likely stop in again.“

“Pretty basic BevMo selection here, perhaps a little more emphasis on the Central Coast than most. Still, has the usual Bear Republic, Alesmith, assorted imports, etc. Service is acceptable, prices are the same as at every BevMo. If you’re here and want a beer, just go across the parking lot to Hollister and have a couple pints or grab a growler.“

“We visited this place late 2011 after a round of Golf at Sandpiper. Brewery is located in a shopping area which does not create a great atmosphere. However we were very positively surprised by their beer selection and beer quality. Burgers are very good!“

“Visited 5 times now, most recently last night (12/21/12).

The place is always full and noisy and the service is often times slow, but it’s a fun place to hang out which is why there are so many people in there. Well that might because this is place is in Isla Vista which is a major party town (UCSB).

The food is pretty good and prices are decently high, which is what I’d expect from a busy successful restaurant. Beer prices are high too but now they’ve shrunk the sample sizes so you pay less even if you are still paying the same per ounce of beer.

The beer is usually pretty good. There have been a couple of duds here and there but most of their beers are nice. The "white IPA" is good, the 543 Toronado IPA is good (really good), hell, all their hoppy beers are good. Noah from Pizza Port San Clemente is now the brewer there which would explain why the hoppy beers are getting better. The other styles are nice too.

Despite the scores being low in the other categories I enjoy this place and will continue to come back when passing through Santa Barbara.“

“Located in a shopping center just off of 101. Pretty easy to spot. Nice spacious interior, plenty of patio seating. The bar is straight ahead, sort of a bent L shape. The bar staff has always been friendly. They do flights of 6 of all their house beers, of which there are many. The beers are usually pretty good and the prices are quite fair on beer. Food is nice, but a little pricey.“

“My wife and I stopped here for lunch on the way to Paso Robles. It’s a nice, clean, comfortable place. The beer selection was great; however, you could take non-beer drinkers here and they’d enjoy it. The food was quite good: I had a grilled fish sandwich. My wife got a really nice salad. The only downside was that it took a long time for our food to come out. On another note: there’s plenty of parking.“

“stopped in here for a tasting... did not eat, so can’t comment on their food. It is a nice brewpub in a strip mall in Goleta (near Santa Barbara). We sat at the bar - very comfortable - a few tvs around - nice people to chat with - bartender was nice and knowledgable. Their Patterson Porter is really good as well as their high grav. beers. The overall tap list is diverse in styles and they also feature a couple guest taps - Green Flash and Sierra Nevada were on when I was there. Nice bathrooms.“

“A few times I year I stop in here on my way up north. On each visit it seems like the beer is better than the last. I really like their hoppy beers and they also do some tasty darker beers. The food is good and fairly priced. Contrary to some of the comments, I have found the service excellent. I tried their IIPA on my last visit and while it was decent I could tell it was not that fresh - the waitress swapped the beer out for a better one no questions asked. Definitely worth a visit.“

“Located in a large mall, this airy and modern restaurant and bar offers 13 of their beers on tap, along with a decent menu of bar food. Their specialty seems to be IPAs, and they have some good ones. There is an attractive bar with a dozen stools and two flat screen TVs. There are also a couple dozen tables and a long counter with stools. The barkeep who served me was friendly, but didn’t know a lot about the beers. A must visit place if in Santa Barbara.“

“This brewer (I don’t know his/her name) is an unsung hero of California. The brewpub restaurant itself is nothing special, being located in an upscale mall setting, but the beer menu and the quality of the brews are simply wonderful. Most on my visit were session ales and all I tried were polished and very drinkable. Moreover, some had a lot of personality (Rye ESB, Gose, India Red Ale, etc.) while retaining this professionalism in execution. I would come back here in a heartbeat to this more of this brewer’s libations if I were to be anywhere near Santa Barbara or driving on the highway, passing through the area.“

“Zodo’s has a good bowling alley, and all the NFL games during the season. For such a place, their selection is pretty good. They have the regular BMC stuff, some "Z’s" beers which are contract brewed by Firestone, and some other microbrews including Stone IPA, Firestone Pale Ale and Union Jack, Red Nectar, Sierra Nevada, and Anchor Steam. Good happy hour prices and generally good prices on beer.“

“A trendy place to grab a bite to eat. Food is reasonably priced, and the beer is too, espeicially during happy hour. I was a little bothered by the lack of a discount on the taster flight during happy hour, but oh well. The food was delicious and the beer was tasty, and seemed to be fairly original. One of our waiters had little knowledge on beer, the other had a great knowledge of their house beers.“

“Hollister Brewing Company is, without a doubt, my favorite brewery.

It’s not because of the food (slightly more gourmet than standard pub food).

It’s not because of the service (good), ambiance (ok), or value (Hollister is a bit on the pricey side).

No. Hollister is my favorite brewery because the brewer is an absolute mad genius. I’ve never been to another brewery with this wide a selection of excellent house beers. Every style is represented. The brewer is constantly trying new recipes and new styles. He’s not afraid to create a nitrogenated pale ale, or a beer made with honey and 25 lbs of orange peels. And, somehow, no matter how strange the idea is, he manages to pull it off with aplomb.

Hollister doesn’t make a lot of the "extreme" beers with ultra high alcohol content or ridiculous hop levels that are all the rage today. No - Hollister just makes well balanced, drinkable, and excellent beer.“

“Nice brew pub along the 101 in southern California. Good selection of house beers on tap with at least one being offered on a nitro tap. Kind of upscale pub food. We only had a few appetizers. The duck fat fries were tasty. The beer was good too. A couple of steps above your typical brew pub fare. Worth a stop.“

“Good number of house brews available, I think I got to try nearly all of what was on tap via selections of 5oz samples. Not really any stand-out beers, but they were all fairly good, for the most part. The service was friendly and fairly fast considering that they were rather busy. Food wasn’t cheap, but it was pretty good. Worth going to, even if it is a bit out of the way in a strip mall type area.“

“Went with my dad and had a very pleasant expiriance. Food was pretty decent, but not amazing. My dad had the sliders and the buffalo wings, I had the Black Forest Panini. Beer was quite good and extremely diverse. No guest taps as they currently have 15 taps of there own and one nitro hand cask. I took pictures of the beer discriptions and uploaded a bunch of new ones that were not on here. The beer was quite good (had 8 of them which I will upload soon (saving a special bottle for #600)). The great part of the expiriance was talking to the brewer and his father for long periods of time, very knowledgable and friendly people. Probably one of the best up and coming brewpubs in the country (along with the Covey). Will return soon!“

“This is the newest brewpub in the Santa Barbara area, located in the Camino Real Marketplace, next to Chilli’s. I think that they opened just under a year ago. Modern, sports-bar style resturant with lots of flat screen TVs, though they arent loud. decent sized, though it gets crowded and noisy during the dinner rush. They have fifteen taps, and as of today they had fourteen house beers and one guest tap (Alpine Exponential Hoppiness). The food is pretty good, a little adventerous for a pub with stuff like duck fat fries and panninis, but nothing too out there. The wings are good, and their sandwiches are solid. The beers are all pretty good from my experience. The brewer is making a lot of different styles, from smoked, to belgian, to DIPA and imperial stout. When I called today, they had just put on a new imperial red ale, so we’ll have to see how that is. I like how they aren’t just sticking to the typical brewpub styles, though they also do a red, blond, a few pales and IPAs, E“
