70 /100 17 SEVERN STREET Traditional pub just of the lower part of the main street in Newtown. An imposing brick building it has two rooms served on both sides by a central bar. The left hand room I frequented had all its own brews currently available and couple of guests on a long row of cask ale pumps. Welcoming and well kept interior design. |
62 /100 Black Boy (JDW) (Bar) 31/32 BROAD STREET, In the middle of a long row of commercial buildings, with an older world appearance, it's towards the river end of town. Public parking exists out front but there is a time limit so be careful if you arrive by car for an extended stay. The building isn't that wide, but the pub is quite deep, with the bar a little way back on the inside, but long against its left wall after you enter. This place was packed on a weekday lunchtime when I arrived, but as it has quite a nice decor that does fit in well with the age of the building you can't blame people for wanting to be in here. Of course it's cheap too, and the usual current selection of real ales from this chain are on offer here. |
64 /100 Black Boy (JDW) (Bar) 31/32 BROAD STREET, Good food and beer selection |
76 /100 17 SEVERN STREET This is the tap for the Montgomery based Monty’s brewery. 6 ales on plus 2 cider. 4 of the ales were from Monty’s and the 2 guests were safe and uninteresting (Pedigree and Rev James). Beer was in good nick, 20p discount for CAMRA members. Definitely worth going if you’re in the area. |
