“The place to go in the centre of Montpellier for your fix of modern fairly hype craft. Along with the local scene, all the big european (and occasionally north american) names can be found here and, as it goes with the scene, the turnover is very rapid both on draft (11 taps) and in bottle (or more accurately these days, in cans). You can spend quite a bit of money here if you are not careful but the prices are extremely reasonable bearing in mind the quality on offer. The staff and owners are very friendly and knowledgeable and there are plenty of beer related events happening regularly. A high level address in the french beer scene let alone in Montpellier.“

“An unmissable part of the Montpellier beer scene. 10 or 11 taps offer a very wide range of styles brewed very competently on the premises ranging from straightforward guzzlers, lactic sours and well made IPAs to barrel aged stouts and mixed fermentation confections. There are even occasional cask offerings for the niche purist plus usually a well made pilsner and an english bitter alongside some belgian styles. The clientele is very mixed and, as the bar is quite large, the atmosphere is fairly boisterous and convivial and thus not like some of the more sedate modern speciality beer establishments. The food is of good quality with a special mention for the burger and the poutine - both excellent. Happy hour is 18h-20h and is very good value. An excellent place.“

“Very pleasant place a tiny walk outside the centre of Montpellier in the agreeable Boutonnet quarter. Very large terrasse occupying most of the square in front for the sunny days in the south and homebrewing classes in a custom equipped setting behind the tastefully decorated main bar. Very knowledgeable and friendly, unpretentious staff and a wide range of constantly rotating local (from the flourishing Montpellier scene) and international craft from the 11 taps. A well thought out selection too, usually offering a range of styles from the most hyped new shiny hoppy thing to a well made Pilsner. I didn't try the food but know that there are hot dogs and a few other light bites. A very good addition to the Montpellier beer scene.“

“If you're planning a trip to Montpellier and you're in need of hop, this is the place to be. Antoine & Lilian will help you make the best choice between 9 taps and hundreds of bottles among some of the best breweries. Weekly events (quizz, tasting, TTO...) and probably the best choice/quality/price ratio i've seen, you won't regret it.“

“Il y a aujourd’hui une foultitude de bars à bières à Montpellier. Le bear’s house se démarque par son choix de craft beer pointues et une connaissance de l’univers de la bière impressionnante par son personnel. 9 tireuses et un choix enorme de canettes et bouteilles a emporter. Pour ne rien gâcher de multiples animations hebdomadaires et des soirées dégustation. Boire un verre au bear’s c’est adopter un ours“

“A little bar on rue de l'Université, also bottle shop but the nine taps rotating between big names (like cloudwaters, omnipollo, cantillon, etc) and little local beers invite you to stay ! The bottle choice is huge and even if its mostly european, you can find American beers, wich is rare in france :) The staff is very nice and knowledgeable so ask them for advice. You can eat plates of cured meets and/or cheeses to pair with your beer or order elswhere to deliver at the bar. Overall it's one on the best beer bar in France, the best place to go in Montpellier if you are a beergeek !“

“The best in Montpellier in my opinion. The only brewpub, and their beer is really solid, ranging from sours to imperial pales and stouts. The ambience is great, the service is friendly and quick, the price is right. 2 min walk from the train station.“

“This is more liquor store than bar but does have four taps. The bar is small and it seems they do most of their trade in off-license sales. But a great little cave of beers, mostly French & European. You won’t find Becks here??“

“I am not an experienced reviewer, so interpret my comments and scores accordingly. Upto ten beers on tap and a lrge variety of bottles. Quick service even when busy from friendly and helpful staff. Happy hour from 1800 to 2000, which is god value, and it stays open until 0100. Simple and limited food, freshly prepared. It seems to be possible to taste before you buy or a tasting selection of four beers of choice is available. A large open bar, wharehouse style with a sofa, chairs, benches and stools against the bar. No smoking law is enforced. Highly reccommended.“

Bref, amateur de bière de passage à Montpellier : This is the place to beer. Vous y trouverez un accueil passionné.“

“Nice new bar/bottle shop on rue de l’université. Four rotating taps, plus a lot of bottles (the FB page says 400, but...). Not *quite* the selection of couleurs de bieres, but a lot closer to the centre. A small, but nice, interior with outdoor seating on the street. I only went once on the opening night, but will be going back for sure! Prices are about on par with what you would expect for Montpellier/France (so, relatively high... but c’est la vie). I didn’t try the food, but I believe it is meat/cheese plates and snacks. Seems to be open as of 4pm, which is earlier than most other places in town (which is great for an afternoon pint). Friendly and knowledgeable staff, and this looks to be a great addition to the local scene!“

Big Mama (Bar)
18 RUE DIDEROT
“This is the only beer bar in town that serves food beyond a meat/cheese plate (don’t get me wrong, I *love* the meat and cheese plate at Analog...), and also the only place that is open in the afternoon (around lunch time, certain days). Conversely, it’s the only burger place in town with a great beer selection. Selection is a few taps, and a big book of bottles (with the bottles being far more interesting than the taps). A varied selection (lots of Belgian, but also English and American), and their website seems to be pretty up-to-date. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I’ve really only ever gone at dinner time, so don’t know what the crowd is like later at night. There is also a nice outdoor patio area inside the courtyard of the tour de babote. The burgers and fries are both great and it’s just a couple steps from la comedie. It’s not my regular hangout, but like going from time to time with the family when we’re craving burgers (and beer!) “

I really don’t see what you call basic, with our 800’s selection from different countries that are not as expensive in other bars. Hope you’ll have a better experiance the next time you swing by. ;)“

“Small beershop cramped with interesting beers including a wide range of French beers, and three fridges in the back with a random selection of these. You can also get a glass for the beer and drink it on one of the tables outside. A second room seems mainly to be for people who watch football when it’s on, but it’s by no means a sports bar. And in the back is some brewing equipment where the owner and others brew and bottle their own beer. If you are luckly, you get to tast one of them...“

“Great bar, with nice music and atmosphere just off place st roch. A small-ish, but nice selection of bottles, and recently a rotating tap and often changing IPA bottle list (as well as a house pale ale/IPA). Owners and staff are super friendly, and knowledgeable when it comes to beer. Food is meat/cheese plates (much better than the typical ones you find in town) to go with your pint. Nice place to go and sit with friends, as it’s not too noisy and there’s usually a place or two to sit (inside or out).“

“Big choice but be careful with the dates of the beers. No beer in fridges and at Montpellier, the temperatures are high. Good place with rotating craft beers on tap and classic Belgian beers. It’s nice but when you come from the North of France, it’s a little bit expensive and basic.“

“After a year in Montpellier, I’m updating my review (original text below). This is one of the two great beer bars in town (the other being Coulerus de bieres, not too far away). The tap selection definitely caters to the French love for stronger/sweeter Belgian beers (delirium, karmelit, kwak, etc), though this is starting to change. Recently, they have had Brooklyn Lager and IPA on tap, and I have been told that new taps will be added soon, that will give a bit more variety and some more bitter-styled beers. There’s a pretty large bottle selection, with a lot of Belgians (some gueuze as well) and a few Americans. They have a show space downstairs that leans heavily (like most of Montpellier!) towards the rock/metal side of things. It’s a pretty eclectic and friendly crowd, though, and it’s easy to become a regular if you’re not too careful. The staff are all super friendly (disclosure, I’m friends with most of them now), and it’s definitely a fun place to spend an evening . A fun place in Montpellier -- we were there pretty much every night of our visit this month. Like most of Montpellier, it had a pretty student-y crowd, especially at happy hour (or on Monday’s quiz night), but there was plenty of space every time we went (especially since all the smokers stand out on the sidewalk) I stuck mostly to the lambic beers, since I can’t get them at home, but they had a good selection of bottles and taps at (I think) reasonable prices. I didn’t eat there, but it looked like food is limited to sausage, cheeses, snacks, etc. They also apparently have a show space downstairs where they have regular bands/djs/etc. Definitely worth a stop off if you’re in town -- I bought a shirt! It’s also not far (a bit of a walk or a tram ride) from Couleurs de Bieres (which was closed both times I tried to go...)“

“I have been in Montpellier for a year now, and this has become my favourite place to go drink a few pints, and/or pick up a few bottles to go. They have 4 rotating taps, that can really vary quite a bit, from Cantillon Geuze (ok, this only happened once), to Kernel pale ale, an Italian Black IPA or Tripel karmelit (hugely popular in France). Aside from that, there are shelves and shelves of bottles, which can be purchased to go, or drunk on-site (there is always one of each cold in the fridge). There’s a pretty big terrasse outside, seating upstairs, and often a decent crowd relaxing on the sidewalk. Very casual, and sometimes studenty atmosphere. No food served here (aside from chips, peanuts and sausages), but you can order a pizza next door and eat it in the bar, as long as you don’t make a mess. The bottle selection is great and varied (this is the only place in town where I have found a good selection of IPAs -- even French ones!), and the staff/owners are super friendly and knowledgeable. Maybe a bit off the beaten path if you are just visiting the center of Montpellier, but definitely worth it if you have had your fill of wine. Note, since they are not in the center of town, they have to close at 1am all year round, and actually close at 11pm on Mondays. “

“Combined beer store and pub with a separate bottle room where you could grab a warm one, bring it to the bar and trade it for a cold one. Good selection. The majority was belgian and french, but also a fair number of Scandinavian, American and British brews. One of the owners that tended the bar offered great service, and his english was good.“

“It’s a combined café and wine shop, but it doesn’t have a licence, so you can’t drink alcohol there. Anyway, in amongst all the other stuff, they had 8 French microbrews. From La Garrigue and another small brewery, both fairly local. Nice, friendly staff, too. Adding this to the database since it appears to be the only bottle shop in central Montpellier worth visiting.“

“A student bar, but one that has a little more class than most. Apparently they regularly have concerts in the basement. Fairly small, and fills up quickly. The selection is decent, but not that big, mostly standard Belgians. Service was OK. I doubt they have 300 bottles, maybe half of that.“

“The place isn’t much to look at, but has real character. Downstairs is just a small bar with some stools, and a big room full of bottles on shelves. Upstairs there’s more place to sit. There’s also some tables outside. They play fairly forgettable, inoffensive music. Food is just sausage or cheese. There’s four draft beers, rotating fairly often, and mostly obscure stuff. The bottle selection is huge, but probably more like 300 beers than 850. Lots of French micro stuff, but also a US/Canadian shelf, lots of UK, Germany, and of course Belgium, plus some others. It’s a real locals bar, where people pop by to split an 0.75l bottle at the bar, chat with the bartenders, or sometimes sit as a bigger group. Very friendly staff, who speak very little English. Excellent service, although sometimes you have to go grab them on the street to say you want to buy something. Came here every evening, and really enjoyed it. Far and away the best place in Montpellier, well worth the walk it takes to get here.

Note that it’s also a bottle shop, so you can buy bottles to take with you as well.“

“Edit. This bar has now closed as of July 2019. A very friendly and unpretentious place on the fringe of a buzzing quartier in the centre of town. Deco is vintage cool with the emphasis on music as is echoed in the very wide ranging playlist. Clientele is very varied - students (french and international), anglophones (the owners are anglophone), courting couples and quartier nighthawks. Interesting beer is all in bottles (35ish) and is primarily belgian with a toe dipped in small scale french brewing and internationals. Food is kept simple and affordable but good - plates of charcuterie and cheese.“
