HALL OF FAME IMPERIAL SAN DIEGO PALE ALE .394 (ABV 9%)

AleSmith’s Hall of Fame version of the legendary Tony Gwynn .394 San Diego Pale Ale pays tribute to the one and only Mr. Padre and his commitment to excellence. Just like its predecessor, this "imperial" or "double" .394 is bursting with even more American hops, lending the beer a diverse palate of citrus, tropical fruit, and pine. Tony envisioned this beer in early 2014 and AleSmith is honored to make another one of his dreams come true.

"Tony Gwynn was incredibly proud to be a member of the San Diego community; he impacted lives all over the world. He was the heart, soul, and flavor of San Diego for so many years and now you can taste his passion with every sip." - Alicia Gwynn

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2020 Bottle purchased in Michigan a year or 2 ago and has been hiding in my stash. Clear amber pour with a thick white head. Aroma of malt, caramel and old hops. Malty and caramelly flavor with honey accents before an earthy hop finish. Was probably much better fresh, but that's my own fault.

UPDATED: MAR 7, 2019 Bomber to pint. Caramel and floral hops with slight citrus. Slightly hazy orange with white head that retains well. Taste is cloying sugar with slight orange faintly hanging around the back. After a few sips; I looked at the bottle and it is dated from June 2018. Would like to have tried it fresh as only the sugary malt is really left. Opened a bit as it warmed. Reminiscent of the malt bomb DIPAs when Tony was getting doubles in the show.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2018 Freezing Midtown bottle share, 2018 vintage. Pours golden and quite clear. Some white foam. Fresh piney nose, good hop character. Taste has beautiful resiny hops, fruity and light. Pretty refreshing actually. Light and hoppy, almost dank. I do enjoy this.

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2018 Shared 2018 bomber poured to my goblet at our 2018 Thanksgiving Tasting showing a hazed, orangey color, with a fair layer of off white/light tan froth, and some foamy spots of lacing. The nose was dank, grass & greenery, with esters as citrus pit, and tropical fruit, with light malt sweetness. Medium bodied, with okay carbonation, the taste was similar, adding a satisfying amount of alcohol for the style, and moderate citrus, rind, and resin bitterness. A respectable Imperial.

A solid, well-laced white head on an unfiltered orange-amber body. The nose pops with fresh elements - rich caramel, citrus fruit and zest, and tropical fruit notes. A beautifully balanced DIPA. Tropical notes of kiwi, melon, and passion fruit; grapes, tangerine, and lemon are backed up by sweet caramel malt. All elements are very fresh. A solid DIPA richness and depth, but no overpowering alcohol burn. Top shelf!

Tap. Deep golden orange. Don;t know the date but this seems significantly maltier than other Alesmith hops I've had. Still liked it, but didn;t love it as expected. Orange and tangerine, light grapefruit, caramelly rich malts. Light sweetness and hop bite a the end. Drinks easy for the abv. 3.7-8

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/19/2018. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy medium golden/amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with amazing retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of huge grapefruit, mandarin orange, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berries, citrus peel/rind, light pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, light caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of huge grapefruit, mandarin orange, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berries, citrus peel/rind, light pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, light caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, mandarin orange, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berries, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, light caramel, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9%. Overall this is a fantastic DIPA! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the big ABV; with the mellowly bitter/resinous/drying finish, not aggressive. Feels like Citra, Simcoe, and Amarillo. Very juicy and fairly dank/earthy hops; great bready malt backbone, mild residual sweetness with lingering bitter dryness. Sweeter version of the base beer. Not sure if the hops are any different, my past review shows many similarities. A highly enjoyable offering as expected of the base beer.

This pours a darkish gold, under a thick, parfait-type head. The nose has lots of juicy citrus hop, as befits a West Coast pale ale, with a note of pine resin just underneath. The taste is also big on citrus, and carries a note of mango as well. Then there's the dank pine resin as expected. Luckily, there is plenty of malt to back this one up. And the alcohol is present, giving this a bit of an aperitif feel. I've had too many imperial IPAs that I just left in the cellar for too many years. So remembering to get at a fresh one is nice. No phenols, medicinal notes or other off flavors, just a nice smack of hops in profligate proportion and variation, with a malt background to set it off. This is a sipping beer, one you'll be able to nurse for most of the length of those upcoming playoff games.
