2018: Scotch ale aged in bourbon and whiskey barrels 9.5% (from label) Kentucky Kilt is our malt-forward Scotch Ale that was matured for nearly a year in bourbon and whiskey barrels. Deep vanilla aromas envelope this dark amber ale, while hints of ripe fruit, oak, and toffee round out this unique and complex barrel-aged blend. (from https://nl.pinterest.com/pin/693132198885046726) IBU: 25 (from https://www.alesongbrewing.com/s/Tasting-Room-Beer-Food-46-48_Online.pdf) Last year, we decided to make a small batch of Scotch Ale and lay it to rest in bourbon barrels. We only filled four barrels, so knew this one would be a small blend. Old Forester and another West Coast distillery's American Whiskey barrels were chosen to mature this one. Since this style of beer is not quite as bold as, say, an Imperial stout, we thought these barrels would highlight the unique malt forward flavors we would have in the base beer. Kentucky Kilt rested in these barrels for about a year in total and emerged with mild vanilla aromas supported by rich toffee and caramel flavors. A hint of coconut lingers on the finish. The personality of this beer is a sweet melody that will envelope your taste buds with a relatively easy drinking, malt forward barrel aged beer. We hope you enjoy what we blended up. This malt-forward style brings notes of toffee, caramel and brown sugar — sweet yet earthy flavors that can be really thought provoking. But when we age in freshly emptied bourbon barrels, notes of vanilla, coconut and a slight smokiness come out, creating this delicious mix of flavors that are subtle and enticing. Well this time around, we made more of Kentucky Kilt because a) it’s so good, and b) so we have some extra for the tasting room after our bottle release! With a little more available, don’t be afraid to open some bottles soon as well as cellar some bottles for a while. We feel this beer is fantastic and ready to drink, but with time in the bottle, some very complex, and earthy flavors will emerge, worthy of eyes-closed sipping and contemplation! (from https://www.alesongbrewing.com/blog/kentuckykilt20) 2023: Scotch-style ale aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels A perennial fan favorite, Kentucky Kilt is our malt-forward, amber-colored, Scotch-style ale that was matured this year in a variety of high-end Kentucky bourbon barrels. The freshly emptied casks induce tantalizing aromas of bourbon, vanilla, and oak, while hints of ripe fruit and toffee round out this unique and complex barrel-aged blend. 11.3% Cases produced: 360 Microbes: Saccharomyces Barrels: George Dickel 14 Year Bourbon, Elijah Craig 18 Year Bourbon, Henry McKenna 10 Year Bourbon (from label) It's only been 18 months since we last released Kentucky Kilt, but it feels like ages as it's one of the most requested beers in our tasting rooms! Our fourth iteration of Kilt follows a similar path as years past, but as with every Alesong beer, it forges its own distinct vintage identity along the way. Beginning its life as our malt-forward Scotch ale, this version was matured in a variety of bourbon barrels before being blended in preparation for release to you. Barrels that once held George Dickel 14 Year Bourbon, Elijah Craig 18 Year Bourbon, and Henry McKenna 10 Year Bourbon all add their own unique character to the final blend. Notes of oak, vanilla, and bourbon layer perfectly on top of the caramel, toffee, and ripe fruit of the underlying Scotch ale.
