RateBeer European Summer Gathering 2017 (Day 2)

Details

Bus leaves for a transfer to Tartu (Estonia).

Estonia has only 1,3 million inhabitants but the craft beer revolution has arrived with a larger bang than you might expect. When only 5 years ago you could find very little that could be described as “craft”, then now Estonia boasts more than 50 small breweries (if you include gypsies). Local market is small, so competition has forced Estonian brewers to export - and Estonian craft beer can increasingly be found in different European countries.

Brewery visits on the way to Tartu

Malduguns Brewery
We are going to visit Latvian best brewery according to Ratebeer - they have had this title for several years in a row. Malduguns opened their production brewery just a few weeks after Labietis opened their brewpub in Riga, making them one of the Latvian craft beer pioneers.

Käbliku Brewery
Käbliku started as a gypsy brewery but since late 2016, they are operating one of the most idyllic rural breweries in Estonia (or maybe even in Europe). Their beers are tasting great as well!

Pühaste Brewery
Pühaste gained fame with their impeccable hoppy beers already when they were still a gypsy brewery. In 2016, Pühaste opened doors of their own brewery in Tartu, making them one of the most anticipated newcomers among Estonian craft breweries.

Evening pub crawl in Tartu

Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia, mainly known as “university town” of about 100 000 people. True, more than 10% of Tartu’s residents are students - and as students like good beer, there is abundance of places for craft beer in the city.

Õllepood Nr.1 Gambrinus / Beershop No.1 Gambrinus
Owner of Beershop No.1, Karmo is the grand old man of Estonian craft beer. His bottle shop is one of the places where you can find one of the best beer selections in Estonia (and you can “taste” some beers at his shop). Karmo has also personally tasted and reviewed all the beers he offers - he is the leading beer-blogger in Estonia whose beer reviews can span over several pages and sometimes become superbly lyrical.

J. R. Schramm’i Keller
That’s the place where you can usually find the best lineup of Pühaste beers, also featuring some other Estonian and European brews. Bottle selection covers much more.

deTolly õllebaar
Bottleshop / bar in Tartu with impressive number of different beers - that can be enjoyed on the spot.

There are several other bars in Tartu that have not been rated by anybody in Ratebeer, so it will also be an opportunity to put Tartu on the map this summer.
