South Australia’s Coopers Beer

Details

In 1862 Thomas Cooper started a small brewing venture in the fledgling colony of South Australia through the strangest circumstances. His ailing wife required a tonic, and Thomas, following a family recipe, produced a restorative brew. His efforts were soon recognized by the local colonials and his Sparkling Ale and Best Extra Stout brews grew rapidly in popularity, leading to the development of a brewery in 1881.

Upon his death, Thomas left the running of the brewery to his four sons who had embraced the family trade and Coopers reputation as a brewer of distinction grew. Through the Great Depression and two World Wars, the second and third generations of Coopers continued the tradition of brewing fine ales and stout. Successive members of the family have staked their claim in the family business either on the brewing side or at the commercial end, while never losing sight of Thomas Cooper’s vision of providing value and quality in the form of a healthy beer for an appreciative public.

Today, Coopers Brewery is Australia’s sole remaining family-owned brewery of stature. On Friday, we’ll be tasting the range of Coopers available to us in the US: their Original Pale Ale (winemakers beer of choice), their Sparkling Ale, the Best Extra Stout, and the sought after Extra Strong Vintage Ale.
