72 Enjoyed my visit to this friendly 2019 Good Beer Guide pub just off the city walls. It was a welcome refreshment stop while I completed the walk round the walls last month. I chose Yorkshire Dales Cafe Amsterdam which was fine. |
70 Visited November 2017. Just inside Fishergate on York's city walls, the Phoenix is a cosy place to have a drink. Four ales were on offer, and the two I tried were served in top condition. The landlord was efficient, the live jazz in the back room pleasant but not intrusive, and the open fire welcome on a cold evening. Worth a visit. |
70 This is a friendly two roomed boozer by the city walls, just inside the inner ring road. There is a pleasant atmosphere in here and also a decent range of beers. Well worth a look. |
72 Visited 6 May. Very nice traditional pub by the city walls. Good selection of beers and not too crowded for a Saturday night. A proper pub |
72 Visited on 17th December, got the bus to the Barbican on a quick whistle stop tour of York, had planned to visit the Woolpack but it was closed, sigh. Happened on this place, nice looking pub from the outside so I ventured in. Lovely old venue, real fires, 2 rooms, a decent range of cask ales, fab decor, some spare tables and pork pies for less than £3. Beer was well looked after, picked up a new tick, service friendly, good value. A really good boozer just inside the city walls. I’d go back again. |
70 A beautiful traditional pub just inside the city walls opposite the York Barbican. It’s a two room affair with the ales lined up on the small bar in the front room, with a larger seating area at the rear. It was very quiet on the afternoon I was in, but it’s very much in a residential area so passing trade is probably lesser in this part of the city, however given it’s well worth a visit I’m sure it can get very busy here at peak times. |

Cosy, local pub just next to the citywall. Very authentic deco, very nice and clean, lots of small rooms. Worth another visit :-) |
70 A great find, just inside the city walls by Fishergate Bar, one of the mediaeval gateways.
The Phoenix has five hand pumps with mainly local beers. I found it really appealing – old but not very old, with a modern feel as if it’s been sympathetically restored, and very friendly service. We sat in the front bar which was cosy, comfortable and welcoming with a nice open fire and candles. There’s also a drinking corridor, a back room with bench tables and a whitewashed outside area. We didn’t eat there but the food looked to be good value, homely fare.
