375 ml bottle thanks to Willrunforbeer. Crystal clear, almost look like water! No really it does. Aroma is orange blossom honey, apples and subtle wood. The flavor is a nice sweet honey that never gets cloying. Almost a floral wildflower / dandelion note going on here with light vanilla. Pretty nice sipper.

Bottle thanks to Doodler! Aroma is musty honey, flowers, vanilla, white grapes, and a hint of alcohol. Taste has strong wood and flowers, some grapes and pear, honey and vanilla linger. Alcohol is noticeable as well. Good mead but nothing to make it memorable really. Was expecting a little more.

Bottle at home with friends. Pour is clear golden with no head - great legs. Sweet floral, woody, almost grassy, oak, brandy-esque, nutty, and maple syrup in the aroma. Taste is sweet honey, vanilla, flower petals, rose hips, nutty, hay, and lightly woody with a sweet finish. Slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Really nice and easy-drinking mead and something I could drink year-round.

One of my all time favorite meads. Last time I had it I wasn’t rating so it’s time to give it it’s due with a fresh 2012 bottle. Pours a pale yellow. Aroma is simple sweet waxy honey. Flavor is as good as I remember. Huge honey sweetness without hitting Polish levels of sweetness. The honey character is very bright and sugary sweet. Hints of apple, vanilla, and a bit of melon. Tones of wax and waves of caramel. A dash of booze in the finish. On the fuller side of medium in body, smooth. Still world class stuff.

Pours pale yellow. Aromas of waxy comb and grapes. Mild earthy wildflower honey up front, very dry with a bold astringency. Mild grape skin and hints of florals. I prefer my meads less dry.

Share courtesy of dak. It pours with a clear watery looking body that has a slight gold hue to it. The aroma is straight up sweet honey goodness mixed with a mild amount of bee’s wax. The taste is smooth and nectar like sweetness with sugary sweet rich honey goodness and some bee’s wax. Nice smooth silky residual sugars and honey richness make this a pleasing sipper.

Bottle sampled @ Dak’s Black Friday tasting. Generously shared by Dak...can’t believe I’m getting a chance to try this. On my wants FOREVER! Extremely fragrant sweet floral and fruity aroma that shows crisp apple, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, oak, and honey. Similar flavor. So refined and filled with raw organic honey. Again demonstrating every member of the melon family. Pure cane sugar and a slight acidity/citrus. Decadent, incredible dessert mead. Close to perfection in a bottle.

Bottle shared by Drew. Thanks! Pours a straw color with some brownish tints. Still, good legs. Nose is clean, low sherry and strong honey notes. Not varietal tinged but nice. Some low fruit. On tasting, mid sweet and very warming. Some papery oxidation peeks through, along with a fungal type note. Tart as well. Nice mead overall.

375 ml shared by drewbeerme. Thanks, dude. Pours a rich glowing pale straw hue, gentle glow. Gentle frothy whitish head dies to a tiny ring, laces very small. Aromas are rich honey and apple, gentle honeycrisp apple, some toffee, some honey, and cider. Rich citrusy apple presence. Initial is medium in body, a firm fruity sweetness shows some honey, apple, and gentle sweetness. A bit of caramel, some oak, gentle growing apple and honeycrisp presence. A bit thinner, backend is apple and cidery, a bit more thin, fruity and vibrant, a gentle oak presence, some vanilla, cool sweetness, some honey. Finish is gentle tartness, apple, and mellow carbonation. A bit dry, that middle and backe is sweeter. Pretty enjoyable.

Medovina Raspberry Rhapsody
Bottle. No head (still). Body is medium pinkish-amber. Aroma is notes of raspberry (including the seeds), Jolly Rancher apple-watermelon candy, honey, alcohol, carpet/rubber, perfume. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Medium body, watery texture, flat carbonation, lightly to moderately astringent, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Not too bad. Not a big fan of the nose, but there aren’t any egregious fusels, just some light off phenols in the background. Raspberry is the most noticeable aromatic, but it also has some candy-ish fruit character as well. Nice flavor balance, neither too sweet or too tart.

Medovina Apis One
Bottle. No head (still). Body is medium to dark yellow. Aroma is a strong note of diesel fuel / jet fuel, other notes of honey, acetone, wet concrete, apple skin. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, unclean. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, flat carbonation, lightly astringent, moderately alcoholic. Wow. I don’t even know what to say. The primary aroma is exhaust from a tractor trailer mixed with that unmistakable smell when you’re setting on the tarmac on an airplane and the jet fumes permeate the cabin. Unreal. One of the most fusel meads I’ve ever sampled. I wish I was exaggerating. There is some honey in the nose too, but yow...so amazingly repellent. And it gets even worse/stronger as it warms up. I literally had to hold my breath to take a sip (and spit, as I’m simply not going to ingest something this fuselly). Some apple/pear in the retronasal aroma but I can’t get past the jet fuel in the glass to find much of it. Dirty aftertaste as you might imagine (ever tried siphoning fuel by sucking the hose and get some gas in your mouth?...arggh!). So sad, but yes...this is impossible to consume. Back to the store for a refund with this one. It’s all the more sad because I used to be a huge fan of this meadery. Doggone it.

Medovina Mystic Sage
Bottle. No head (still). Body is light yellow. Aroma is notes of honey, flowers, honeydew melon, insecticide and gasoline, light note of herbs (oregano, etc.). Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, flat carbonation, lightly astringent, moderately alcoholic. The higher alcohols are apparently still an issue at Medovina, as this is seemingly a very new product and bug spray and petrol are clearly evident. The aroma is pleasant otherwise, but it’s hard to ignore the fusels...would probably give a 7 or so for the nose if they weren’t there. The sage is very quiet, just barely detectable, which is admittedly better than being overdone, but a little more sage-y-ness wouldn’t have been a bad thing. Rather syrupy sweet (for this meadery at least, certainly not compared to Polish sugar bombs), but there’s enough acidity to preserve drinkability. All in all ok, it’s just a shame about the fusels.

Medovina Just Cider
Bottle (plastic screw cap, oh-so-classy). No head (still). Body is clear light to medium yellow. Aroma is notes of nail polish remover (acetone), modeling glue (toulene), plastic, and apples. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, unclean. Medium body, watery texture, no carbonation, lightly to moderately astringent. Oh dear. Mark has lost his way in recent years, it seems. In the early days, Medovina meads were truly the best in the land...I strongly recommended them to anyone who was vaguely interested in honey wine. But after several years, fusel alcohol became more and more apparent in the new batches and I stopped trying/drinking them. So when I saw a cider on the shelves a few weeks ago, I was very curious but skeptical. Alas, this is by far the worst thing ever to bear the Medovina moniker. Almost nothing but fusel alcohols and phenols in the nose...positively repellent. The dirty aftertaste came as no surprise, and frankly I didn’t even want to take a single sip based on the smell. It’s so very sad to see the mighty fall...
