Aroma: esters, iron, weak herbal notes. Appearance: golden color and white head. Taste: low bitterness, iron, esters, weak hoppy notes, dry. Palate: low body and high carbonation. Overall: rather poor hoppy pale ale, iron destroys everything.

Wenkers Dortmunder Maibock
0.33 l draught @ Wenkers am Markt, Dortmund, April 23, 2017. Appearance is similar to Wenkers Urtrüp, i.e. amber, cloudy and a small head. This is a stronger version of the house ale. It is still nicely balanced - you don’t get too much ABV. Still, it is on the sweet side. Reminds me somewhat of Finnish sahti.

Wenkers Urtrüb
0.5 draught @ Wenkers am Markt, Dortmund, April 23, 2017. Appearance is cloudy, amber and with small head. Does not look like your average German beer. Taste is very fruity, but still balanced. Not too sweet. Bit different than most of the beers in town (pils, pils, export...).

Hövels Hop Pale Ale
33cl bb10/2017, merci idiosynkrasie. Oddly un-aromatic and still tasty-enough metallic Alt with off-kilter candied citrus hop oils. - Mainly macro-sulphury in the nose, metallic barley porridge. Sets off sweet and wheat-bready with touches of toffee and sweet jam, then develops a more pronounced candied citrus and late herbal melissa freshness to rince away the off start. Familiar heavy, metallic Alt body. Strange, unbalanced concoction that has its moments.

So eine einzigartige Kombination ist die Geschichte nun auch wieder nicht. Recht muffig mit einem ordentlichen Schuss an Malz und Karamell. Leicht brotig und im Abgang irgendwie streng.

33cl MHD 10/17, merci idiosynkrasie. Craftbock hence "mit obergärigen Hefearomen...", yet Bock and hopextracted... Buttery caramelcoppery pour. Aroma of damp walnut, skimmed chocolate milk, a touch of Korn abv, sardine oils. Pan-warmed nuts and nut oil bitters in flavour, metallics, rainwater, thin caramels like large batch maple syrup and skimmed Schokomilch. Manages to remain drinkable and somewhat like a filtered, macrobrewed Imperial Alt.

(bottle, 33cl) Clear, dark amber colour with a beige mid-sized foamy head. Sweet dark malty aroma with hints of caramel, sugar beet and shades of herbal hoppy spice. Sweet and delicately bitter flavour, medium bodied with a quite tame carbonation. Slightly syrupy malty taste with veggie notes of sugar beet and caramel; sweet and slightly sticky, restrained bitter finish. Wouldn´t have ordered a second one. 04.VI.17

Hövels Hop Pale Ale
(bottle, 33cl) Clear, amber colour with a medium-sized and slightly tanned foamy head. Discreet aroma of mildly citric and grassy hops, draffy malt in the background. Moderately sweet and delicately bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a calm carbonation. Initially sweet malty base with hints of bread and a whiff of toffee, accompanied by rather cautious drying grassy and citric hops; medium-dry sweet-bitter finish with a mildly grassy touch. Disappointing. 25.IV.17

Hövels Maibock
0.3 l on tap at the brewpub at 18°P and 7.8% abv. Minimally hazy, dark amber with a medium large, foamy, very dense, stable, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, minimally grassy-spicy aroma of caramel, dark honey and a touch of nuts. Sweetish-malty taste of caramel, dark honey and a touch of nuts, followed by a short, slightly bitter, moderately grassy-spicy finish. Medium to full body, creamy creamy and a bit effervescent mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Tasty, round and well-made brew, drinks way too easy for that abv. I wondered if Hövels and Wenkers Maibock were about the same but after immediate comparison I dare to say that both are quite different from each other.

Medium to full body, creamy and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite tasty, saturating, just a bit unround, overall very pleasant.

4 bottles for 3,49 ?? Of course I buy this as another brewery jumps on the "craft beer" bandwagon...Amber/orange with a nice head. Aroma is fruity (lemons). Taste is mildly fruity and grainy with a very bitter aftertaste. Finish is quite rough. Not that balanced. Medium carbonation. Süffig and ok but not a really great Pale Ale by any means. If you make it a point to call it "Hop Pale Ale" I expect to be overwhelmed by hops. Alas I was not.

0.33 l bottle from local ’REWE’, best before October 2017. Clear, golden amber with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, white head. Very faint, sweetish, slightly grassy aroma. A bit sweetish, slightly grassy and maybe a little fruity taste of honey, straw and hints of orange jam, followed by a short, moderately bitter, a little grassy-resiny finish. Medium body, a bit creamy and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Not bad, just one of the blandest Pale Ales I’ve ever had, hops are detectable but provide for only little aroma.

Bottle: Clear, ruby-amber coloured, smaller off-white head; mild to moderate dryish dark-malty and fruity (red berries ?) nose with a narrow caramelly background, herbal hops barely detectable; mild to moderate - as welll - bitter-sweet flavour, relatively light bodied for a beer of 7.2 %; slightly lingering sweet fruity and caramelly finish with a increasing bitterness in the aftertaste. Nothing wrong with it, just not much more than average german industrial standard...

Bottle: Almost clear, deep golden, loose but stable off-white head; mild dryish grainy nose with a slight dry citrussy bitterness in the background; mild to moderate - dryish as well - bitter flavour, some subdued malty sweetness still detectable; quite light bodied, surely not watery; mildly lingering bitter-fruity finish. Not bad, but very tame. Are the hops under the sea in a Yellow Submarine...?

Bottle. Beautiful Red colour. Smells of central european hops and malts. Reminds me of a Pils. Taste is nutty, bitter and metallic. Long lasting bitter finish. Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is somewhere between creamy and watery. This is not outstanding but an alright brew. Not sure about the style though, feels like a mix of Alt and Pils.
