COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The St. Paul Double is a strong, dark abbey beer with secondary fermentation in the bottle. Thanks to the dryhopping technique, which adds hops after fermentation, it has a rich and distinct sweet aroma of roasted malt. Full-bodied and a rich and complex flavour in a combination of sweet and bitter. In addition, the double has a soft, subtle aftertaste.

Beer5000 (10652) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - APR 11, 2024
UPDATED: APR 11, 2024 Backlog June 2010. Amber body under a fading off-white head. Aroma has malt, hint of dark chocolate and some cellar notes. Taste is sweet malt, caramel, brown sugar and spicy yeast. Fine body with same aftertaste. Quite straight forward, but well made.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2024 Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a very dark brown with a reddish hue (mahogany like) and a thinnish creamy beige head. Nice lacing on the glass. Aromas of dry dark fruits, plums, chocolate, liquorice and some toasty brown bread. Taste has more of the dry dark fruits, more plums and more chocolate and liquorice. A light tartness and also a light touch of sweetness. Quite well balanced. Thin to medium body with average carbonation and slightly oily mouthfeel. Decent slightly above average Dubbel.

tontalus (1812) - - DEC 12, 2022

DraftDodger (7643) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - MAR 14, 2022
UPDATED: MAR 14, 2022 Copenhagen 14/3 2022. 33 cl bottle from Beerdealer web-shop. Red label with a drawing of a monk calmly preparing to indulge in a well served cup of beer. Pours opaque dark brown with a midsized off-white head. Stable. Settles as a thin, patchy layer of foam unable of covering the surface of the beer. Rim along the side of the glass. Moderate lacing. Aroma is moderately intense with a sweet, malty odor with a touch of spices mingling with a whiff of alcohol. Caramel and toffee. Peat and leather. Metallic alcohol. Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, lightly tingling texture. Flavor is medium intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a moderately strong bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and a bit thin. Lingers shortly. Finish is semi-dry. A bit on the thin and subdued side.

PubTun33 (308) - Great Malvern, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 17, 2020
UPDATED: AUG 17, 2020 33cl bottle from Beers of Europe dated best before 13/03/2021. Served into a La Trappe Trappist glass having warmed from refrigeration for around 40 minutes. The beer pours a dark brown coca-cola colour in the glass. Some limited carbonation is visible. A compact honeycomb head develops, slowly dissipating to a thin wedge of layer. Some lacing. On the nose the beer is limited in its depth of aroma. Some dark fruit, some coffee bitterness. Predominantly, sweet sugar and Belgian yeast. And as strange musky aroma that I, at first, thought was my glass but now believe was the beer. Unfortunately, a similar story with the taste. Very limited fruitiness with limited yeast. Sweet with a little consistent hint of coffee bitter. All the notes expected of the style are present, but not as powerful as I wanted. In the mouth the feel is soft with a little lingering dark fruit. Nothing to write home about. Overall, a very average representation of the style. All of the right notes in the right places, just not the strength or depth of flavour you’d want considering that the leading dubbel (Westmalle) is available in supermarkets.
