Schans Doppel

Unless most bockbier nowadays in The Netherlands, this bock is not that sweet, fortunately. Actually it's one of the better Dutch bocks in my opinion.

33cl Bottle from Bierhut. Gusher! Amber colour, off-white head. Aroma of malts, hint of caramel, hay, medium sweet. Flavour is medium sweet, malty, light grassy, hint of caramel, decent bitterness. Light bodied. Decent, shame of the extreme gushing.

Schans Stout (2018)
Enormous cream-beige head, near-black beer. Sweetish nose with greenery, and an aroma not unlike bog-myrtle and human sweat. Sweetish flavour as well, more greenery, and again a strange flavour, somewhat less bog-myrtle like. Especially in the aftertaste, one gets a madeirisation impression, and there is definitely some oxydation. Bit smoky in the end. Strange stout, if not bad.

Schans Vesting Gilde Bier
On tap at ’Café Demmers’ as ’Vesting Gilde Blond’ at 6.2% abv, according to the bartender brewed by a small brewery in Belgium and not by De Schans anymore. Clear, golden yellow with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Sweetish, slightly spicy aroma of caramel, honey, vanilla, clove and hints of citrus. Sweetish-malty, moderately yeasty-spicy taste of caramel, honey, vanilla, clove and some citrus, followed by a short, slightly bitter, moderately yeasty-spicy finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Nice, refreshing Blond!

0.33 l bottle from the brewery shop, best before December 2016. Clear, very dark ruby with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, tan to brown head. Roasty-malty, slightly fruity aroma of dark chocolate, coffee beans, some toffee and hints of raisins. Sweetish, roasty-malty taste of milk chocolate, coffee beans, toffee and hints of raisins, followed by a medium long, roasty-bitter, chocolaty finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, average to lively carbonation. Good bock, rather roasty with enough residual sweetness and a nice mouthfeel. Finally a beer by that brewery without excessive carbonation or gushing.

0.33 l bottle from the brewery shop, best before February 2016. Clear, golden yellow with a huge, foamy, stable, white head. Sweetish, fruity-yeasty aroma of banana, peach and clove. Sweetish, fruity-yeasty taste of peach, banana and clove, followed by a long, rather bitter, peppery finish. Medium body, very effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Tasty, but again too much carbonation spoils the positive impression. Their beers could be so much better with a less foamy appearance.

Schans Smoky Ale
0.33 l bottle from the brewery shop as ’Smoky’, best before April 2016. Little gusher again, two out of two from that brewery. Clear, golden amber with a massive, creamy, almost stable, tan head. Intense smoky-malty aroma of smoked ham, campfire, caramel and honey. Sweetish, smoky-malty taste of smoked ham, campfire, caramel and honey, followed by a short, medium bitter and smoky finish with hints of coffee. Medium body, slightly oily mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Really nice stuff, not extremely smoky but nicely in balance with the sweet malts. But now I should be warned before opening another bottle of that brewery!

Roasty-malty taste of mainly coffee, some caramel and hints of dark, ripe fruits, followed by a medium long, slightly bitter, roasty and coffeish finish. Medium body, effervescent mouthfeel, average to lively carbonation. Quite okay, just way too much carbonated, making it not that easy to drink.

330ml bottle (Koht Spring Auction, Tallinn)
Very biscuity grainy aroma. Ditto taste. Sweetish too. Clean palate when poured clear. Straw, large spongy head. More character before the yeast. More floral, and softer bready taste, from the yeastier glass. Which also had a lovely floral hoppy finish - I drank all the dregs from the bottom of the bottle! Refreshing for a 7% beer, had an interesting character, not just another cookie-cutter saison.
