Adelbert's October Rust
12 oz can served in a tumbler- poured a transparent Amber-copper color, 1mm sun faded tan in color head formed but no lacing. Aroma of malt and a note of caramel. Hits the mouth with a light body, malt was just lightly toasted, light sensations of caramel and brown sugar in the middle, finish is lightly sweet. Very good- damn shame they shut down the brewery last Halloween.

Dry, but fruity and tangy. A bit dank. Great head and appearance but overwhelming taste overall. Smooth but lacks the hops kick I expect from an IPA.

Adelbert's Whimsical Series: Hibiscus Saison
Perfectly clear deep pink and barely ruby coloured body with hints of both violet and indigo with a super small, definitely pink coloured head that shows barely a sliver that fades to nothing a few seconds later. Aroma of bright, tart floral notes with some hibiscus, some chamomile and a deep grassy and bitter note soon afterwards perhaps from the yeast or cedar/dry notes with a light sweetness and a sweetness that shows up towards the end, but is really drowned out by the floral and pungent notes in the nose. Light to Medium-bodied; Pungent bitterness and punch that shows a good deal of grain and floral notes with the grass and dryness as well, but the slightly tart hibiscus flowers do come through strongly at the end. Aftertaste is deep and relatively pungent with a bitterness and strong deep floral note that has a little bit of hibiscus to it, but more of a chamomile and tea bite that has some bitterness and pungency instead of just tart elements. Overall, an interesting and surprising beer all the way around with some tart flavours, a lot of floral and dry notes, but als o some sweet, complex and bitterness that seems to work out reasonably well as the intended name - a hibiscus saison. Nice to sample and worth trying to find if you typically like hibiscus sours, as this adds some complexity to that note making it way more dry throughout. I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Total Wine in Selma (The Forum), San Antonio, Texas on 14-October-2019 for US$1,99 sampled in my house here in Washington on 06-August-2020.

Adelbert's Tres Hombres
Very hazy golden and straw coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall off-white and Soapy head that holds strong for a while. Aroma of grapefruit, crisp biscuits, a dose of hay and grass and some floral notes, without much alpha acids or bitterness at all. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong grassy, herbal and perfumey hops dominate the flavour at first with some lemon, citrus and a touch of sweetness from the fruit. Aftertaste shows some light soapy and floral notes with a good deal of biscuits and malt components, but while the hops arent bitter, their characteristics show through and leave some grass and dry pine flavours noticeable. Some decent flavours throughout, but nothing revealing for the style. Overall, a good and interesting IPA with a lot of floral and grassy notes around, but not as robust as you'd expect for the style I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Total Wine in Selma (Forum), San Antonio, Texas on 14-October-2019 for US$2,49 sampled at home In Washington on 21-February-2020.

Adelbert's Lagerboy Pilsner
12 oz. can purchased in Austin, TX. 4.8% ABV. Pours a cloudy pale yellow color with a small white head and fair retention. Faint lacing. No distinct aroma. Lightly sour lemony / skunky flavor with a generic malt base. No signature flavors at all. Tastes more like a bad golden than a pilsener. Disappointing. Is this a live beer? This can blew it's seal yesterday. That might be part of the problem.

Adelbert's Tripel B (Bad Boy Brew)
25-Mar-14 (750-ml corked-and-caged bottle, Batch No. 017, Bottled 13-Feb-14: Sample bottle from the distributor)
The theme of spent grain character continues here, but it seems especially obnoxious in a Belgian Tripel. The nose is grainy, very husky, corny, and sweet, with banana, clove, bubble gum, and hay. On the palate, the husky character just jumps out, ruining any potential the beer might have. In the background, bubble gum, candi sugar, clove, and banana are unable to save the flavor. It's full bodied, medium in carbonation, and on the sweet, sugary side. The beer is a hazy amber in color with an inch of tan head that settles to a ring and thin sheet. Overall, this is a very substandard Tripel. I could try to dig deeper into what I'm picking up in detail, but I only want to dump the beer and move on to something else.

Adelbert's Travelin' Man
22-Mar-14 (750-ml corked-and-caged bottle, Batch No. 001, Bottled 04-Feb-14: Sample bottle from the distributor)
Pushing through all the samples, I'll say this, the head is pretty gorgeous on these beers. The Traveler pours a hazy, dark-copper body with two inches of foamy, large-bubbled, pale-tan head that settles to a bubbly blanket, leaving some spotty lace on the glass. The nose is very generous with fruity and grassy aromas, with sweet, stone fruits, orange citrus, sweet pine, and caramely malt. While the hoppy aromas are sweet and enticing, the hop flavors are more restrained, showing some pine and orange citrus, but the lighter hop character allows the medium-sweet malt to stand out more, which is unfortunate because it's kind of grainy and husky, and I just hate grain husk character in my beer. There's a touch of Belgian yeast character contributing a hint of bubble gum. The beer is medium-full in weight, medium in carbonation, shows a touch of astringency, and is neither dry nor cloying. Overall, this had potential, but I really didn't like the malt base on this one.

Adelbert's Scratchin' Hippo
22-Mar-14 (750-ml corked-and-caged bottle, Batch No. 018, Bottled 18-Jan-14: Sample bottle from the distributor)
Most entries in the Bière de Garde style are pale to amber in color, but this is in the chestnut colored category. The tan, bubbly head rises to nearly two inches and settles slowly to half an inch, leaving some spotty lacing on the glass. The nose is malty, yeasty, and musty, with aromas of nut shells, toasted bread, corn, grain husk, and a hint of caramel candy. On the palate, the malts are very toasty, bready, lightly sweet, and somewhat caramely, with a nutty, woody flavor, but there's a touch of grain husk in the finish that's a bit of a downer. There's a good amount of Belgian yeast flavor plus some light spicy and herbal notes in the background. It's medium in weight, medium in carbonation, and despite the modest sweetness from the malts, the beer finishes fairly dry. Overall, this is a pleasant beer with a complex malt character, but it's not grabbing me the way the Wit did.

22-Mar-14 (750-ml corked-and-caged bottle, Batch No. 009, Bottled 03-Feb-14: Sample bottle from the distributor)
This beer pours a hazy, golden-amber body with half an inch of off-white head that settles to a wide ring and island, leaving patchy lacing on the glass. The nose is toasty and lightly herbal, with some caramel, hay, and cheese, but it has some grainy, husky character too. On the palate, it's pretty rich and malty to me for a Saison, with grainy, husky, toasty, and caramely flavors, plus bubble gum from the yeast and some light herbs. It's medium-plus to medium-full in weight, which is just too heavy for a Saison. Carbonation is medium, and the malts are rich and sweet enough that it's not a refreshing beer to drink. Overall, I'd say this is below average for a Saison. Not a fan.

22-Mar-14 (750-ml corked-and-caged bottle, Batch No. 021, Bottled 14-Feb-14: Sample bottle from the distributor)
This hazy, yellow-gold beer is capped by an inch of bubbly, foamy, white head that recedes to a thin, unbroken blanket that's propped up by an unending army of carbonation bubbles surging upward through the beer. Off the bat, this smells like a hot dog with lots of mustard, and behind that, lemon, bread, light herbs, and yeast. On the palate, the entry is lemony and herbal, with toasty wheat, bread yeast, some light pepper emerging toward the finish. It's light-medium in weight, medium-high in carbonation, fully dry, gently acidic, and pretty refreshing to drink. Overall, I like this Witbier because it's not over-hopped or over-spiced and the weight isn't too heavy. Very nicely crafted.

25-Mar-14 (750-ml corked-and-caged bottle, Batch No. 005, Bottled 10-Dec-13: Sample bottle from the distributor)
Well, finally, I've reached the last of eight sample bottles from this brewery that's new to California, and it's been a real struggle. This one pours a dark amber to brown body with two inches of tan head that settles to a fluffy, creamy blanket, leaving stringy and patchy lacing. The nose offers sweet, dark fruit, yeast, and dark malt, with aromas of date, raisin, fig, toasted bread, cheese, brown sugar, banana, and grain husk. On the palate, it's spicy, fruity, and malty, with date, raisin, clove, bubble gum, cherry, brown sugar, candi sugar, and caramely malt. The beer is full bodied and rich, a bit sweet with little to balance it. Carbonation is medium. Overall, this is okay. Compared to the other offerings in this portfolio sampling, it's one of the few to not have a strong husky character. Nevertheless, it's only average at best for the style and not something I care to drink again.

Adelbert's Dancin' Monks
25-Mar-14 (750-ml corked-and-caged bottle, Batch No. 008, Bottled 08-Jan-14: Sample bottle from the distributor)
After trying six beers from this brewery and liking only one, it's hard to stay optimistic, but I'll do my best. The beer pours a hazy, dark-amber body with almost two inches of tan head that settles to a ring. The nose is sweet, fruity, and spicy, with date, fig, candi sugar, caramel, and banana, but there's also that spent grain character that seems to kill every beer they make and it's obnoxious here too. On the palate, it's lighter in fruit, the banana, date, and fig being less prominent that is typical for the style. Instead, the grainy and husky character of the malt dominates, destroying any possibility of me enjoying the beer. Weight is full, carbonation is medium, and there's a bit of astringency in the finish from the grain husk. Overall, this is probably the worst of the seven beers so far, in part because it's the worst in comparison to what the style calls for. Did not enjoy, but did dump it down the sink. Another poor execution of a classic Belgian style.

Adelbert's Black Rhino
22-Mar-14 (750-ml corked-and-caged bottle, Batch No. 010, Bottled 20-Feb-14: Sample bottle from the distributor)
This beer is very dark brown in color, showing some ruddy transparency at the edges. The tan, bubbly head pours to almost two inches before settling slowly to an unbroken sheet, leaving spotty lace on the glass. The nose is mostly malty, with nut shells, a bit of dark toast, dirt, funk, and cut grass. On the palate, it doesn't sport very friendly flavors, offering dry nut shells, sesame oil, dirt, cacao nibs, cigarette ash, and white pepper. It's medium-plus in weight, medium in soft carbonation, and fairly dry. Overall, I can't find anything in this beer that I've really enjoyed. It's complex, I'll give it that, but none of the flavors interest me.

Adelbert's Sundowner
I acquired Sundowner at a Total Wine on a visit to the DFW area last summer. While a beer or two I have had from Adelbert's have been pretty decent, I have been mostly underwhelmed by Brut beers in general. Let us move along. I pop the cork and am greeted by a significant, non-ending flow of foam. I catch as much as I can and then make a pour into my New Belgium globe glass. The liquid is a dense yellow-orange and the before-mentioned head is off-white and remains vigorous. The scent delivers yellow raisin and floral, not a bad intro. I take a drink, not bad either, better than any other Brut beer sampled previously. Yellow fruit, yeast, hay and grass, honey and granny smith apple. No bitterness, a healthy 12% ABV that is well concealed. Better than expected.
