Dix Smoked Porter
Keg at Dix Brewery & BBQ, Vancouver, BC on 14/09/2008. A really nice, very smooth Porter, with a good hint of smokiness on the nose. Translates to the flavour, leaving an almost smoked fish note to it. Really unsure why I only had one beer in this place!

On tap at the Alibi Room. Advertised as DIX is Dead IPA, since they recently went out of business. Pours copper in color with a dusty off-white head and a surprising amount of carbonation. Smells of hops and biscuity malts. Tastes of both with added notes of caramel. Good stuff.

Dix Barleywine
On tap at the Alibi Room. Aged 18 months according to the menu. Rating #9 of the beer. Pours a dark shade of amber wit ha trim beige head. Surprisingly carbonated -- particularly for the time it spent aging. Loaded with hops, caramel, and brown sugar. Unusual for the style, but tasty.

Dix Barleywine
Somewhat subdued aroma features cherry and berry fruitiness, cheesy and resinous hops along with toffee and caramel. Opaque burnished copper/amber coloured body is topped by a decent, fine bubbled, cream coloured head that recedes to a lasting cover and coats the sides of the glass. The flavour offers big round malts with plenty of caramel and toffee. Very sweet without cloying perhaps due to the strong offsetting bitterness. Fruity character is notable especially in the long cherry finish. Medium full body is a bit syrupy in texture with lightly prickly carbonation. Truly sad that this may be one of my last beers from this brewery. Hopefully the brewer will reappear nearby soon. Cheers Derrick! This is a great brew. Aged 18 months on tap at Alibi Room.

Dix Damage Control Grand Cru
Draught at the brewpub
Dark mahogany color; small creamy head. Woody caramel aroma, light soil and bark. Good body structure, round mouthfeel; quite sweet caramel flavor, with some chocolate and light sweet liquorice; the yeast gives a light fruity touch. Warming alcohol and low bitterness in the final.
It’s a solid brew, balanced, not particular as some true Belgian, but not bad at all.
Noble.

Hazy blond color. The aroma has indeed some crispy malt and German hop. The body is quite weak (also, overcarbonated), with mild crispy malt flavor, strong bitterness; the final is maybe too sharp and dry, a bit minty. Not bad.

Dix Barleywine
Cask at Alibi Room, Vancouver, as Dix BarleyWine 2009
Beautiful red-amber color. The aroma, initially, shows nice fruity and resiny hops (Simcoe?), later it has a cheesy touch. The cask allows to provide a perfect mouthfeel, soft and undercarbonated; it has good caramel flavor, strong bitterness, and a sharp cheese presence (Parmigiano); not very sweet. The ending bitterness is too much. Strange beer, the cheese, even if suspicious, adds something, but it’s not a Barley Wine.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours maroon-ish brown with no head. Aroma of caramel malts, dark fruits and alcohol. Flavour follows similarly, with some oak and quite a bit of sweetness. I thought the alcohol was too pronounced and there wasn’t much complexity to this. Decent though.

Dix Game Day Lager
This arrived at my local 7-11, and honestly this isn’t a bad "game day" beer. I can see myself tailgating or watching football with a bunch of friends and drinking this. Does this satisfy with a meal, or when you want a GOOD beer? Hell no.

Raters need to get out there and taste this barlywine because it is fantastic. Closest to LaConner Brewing’s Olde Curmudgeon of the barleywines I have tried so far. Deep ruby and copper colored with very little head. Wonder floral hops, licorice, cotton candy, red berries and citrus fruits. Flavor is sweet and hoppy, medium bitterness balanced with biscuits and fruits. Finish is warming alcohol and sweet brown and fruit sugars that last forever, sticky and resinous with viscosity contributing to a velvety texture. This was a fantastic Barleywine.

Minimal tenacious head clings to a rich amber-rose IPA. Potent floral and grapefruit hop aroma with hints of biscuits, caramel and pineapple. Wonderful bitter taste, citrus fruits, hints of caramel. A warming alcohol finish and viscous mouthfeel. I loved nursing this IPA. A definite contender for best IPA in BC, up there with the Central City Red Racer IPA.

On tap at Dix Brewery, pours a hazy golden. Aroma of light hops and citrus. Flavour is quite offensive, I must say, at least in the pint I had. Pungent, unbalanced hops with a very foul maltiness to it. Maybe mine was tainted?

Straw colour. Doughy, strawlike aroma. Creamy body with low bitterness. Malt-accented with very little hop character. It drinks sweet and clean. Not that I’d ever pass the IPA up for this again, but it was good for style.

Tap: Darker reddish-brown. Served a bit too cold. More fruit balance in the aroma than the cask version. The darker malts stand out better. Alcohol-forward front, followed by light plum, some vague toasty, chocolatey malts. I like this on tap better.

Cassis oak cask. Reddish brown. Malty, fruity aroma is lightly toasty and the fruits are dark. The black currant does not come through specifically on the nose. It does on the palate though, in spades, with alcohol coming through behind it. Toasty finish, a bit oaky. It doesn’t really all come together. The sweetness of the malts is nice though - and I think that’s why I like the tap better because you get more of that, without the oaky distraction and overdose of black currant. Score is for tap only.

On tap @ Dix. Cloudy and copper. Head is just a small ring. Not much lacing. Aroma of both strong hops and sweet malt, with some alcohol. Beautiful taste, kind of like a really strong Double IPA, with a little more alcohol, and a little less hoppy. Nevertheless, this barleywine is well-hopped in the cascadian manner. This ale was also somewhat fruity and complex. My words do not do it justice. I hope I will taste it again in the future.

On tap. Very dark brown with no head, just a little ring. Rather hoppy and slightly roasty aroma. Taste balanced roasted malts with higher than average hop flavour. Not too sweet. Amber colored with a thin white head. Smells of red licorice, medium malt and some christmas spice. Flavor is red fruits and candy, light spicy hops and shortbread. Palate is medium, smooth with a fairly lasting sweet finish. This is a solid scottish ale but it is best to pair it appropriately with food because the sweetness is otherwise excessive in large volumes.

Dix Longhorn Texas Brown Ale
On tap. Very dark brown brew with a big light brown creamy cap and endless lacing leaving rings. The main aroma is the dark malts that are not heavily roasted, dark citrus, apricots, grapefruit... it all seems to come across warm. Wow. What an interesting beer: intense roast, massive citrus grapefruit hops, lots and lots of pine... this is pretty much a hybrid IPA, probably a dark IPA. This has more pine than the IPA I just had, something almost chocolatey (mostly on the after taste). Apricots, pumpernickel crust ??, sweet candy. Excellent after taste! Junipers? More massive hops. This beer really surprised me. I wish I had more time and no vehicle to drive....

On tap. Dark amber brew with a large, thick darker off white creamy head and just a crap load of lacing. The aroma is mainly caramel and soft fruit (orange, grapefruit, lemon). Man, does this beer have a bite or what. Grapefruit... lots of unsweetened grapefruit and tons of GF after taste, apricots, rich malts, lemon, bread, red apple shine, pin. Very easy drinking! Smooth with an obviously large hop presence that just slays the ’buds. Excellent brew.

Pint on tap @ Dix. Golden-brown with lasting head. Hoppy aroma and taste. Malt gets sweeter and hop profile diminishes slightly as I get closer to the botoom of the glass. Caramel taste in the malt and citrus in the hops. The 8.3% alcohol is masked extremely well. Dix serves this in a big glass and it is a good deal. Most hopheads will dig this one.

Looks like the cat came back..... (Draught) Sampled at the brewpub on February 4, 2009. Pours a thin, quick dissipating beige head atop an opaque body. Nose is a washed out ashtray of roasted malt and slight acidity. Minor cocoa powder lingers but mostly a watery roasted nuttiness. I find it rather flavourless. I suspect kindest thing I’d be able to say is - 9% and served in a full-sized pint glass - are you mad? Anyhow, very bland Imperial Stout.
